    How much earlier would LSST have discovered currently known long-period comets?

    Among solar system objects, comets coming from the Oort Cloud are an elusive population, intrinsically rare and difficult to detect. Nonetheless, as the more pristine objects we can observe, they encapsulate critical cues on the formation of planetary systems and are the focus of many scientific investigations and science missions. The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), which will start to operate from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in 2025, is expected to dramatically improve our detection ability of these comets by performing regular monitoring of the Southern sky deep down to magnitude 24.5 with excellent astrometry. However, making straightforward predictions on future LSST detection rates is challenging due to our biased knowledge of the underlying population. This is because identifications to date have been conducted by various surveys or individual observers, often without detailed information on their respective selection functions. Recent efforts (see e.g. Vokrouhlickỳ et al., 2019) to predict incoming flux of Long Period Comets still suffer of the lack of systematic, well-characterized, homogeneous cometary surveys. Here, we adopt a different point of view by asking how much earlier on known comets on long-period or hyperbolic orbits would have been discovered by a LSST-like survey if it was already in place 10 years prior to their perihelion epoch. In this case, we are not simulating a real flux of incoming comet, as all comets in our sample reach the perihelion simultaneously, but we can analyze the impact of a LSST-like survey on individual objects. We find that LSST would have found about 40% of comets in our sample at least 5 years prior to their perihelion epoch, and at double (at least) the distance at which they were actually discovered. Based on this approach, we find that LSST has the potentiality to at least twofold the current discovery rate of long-period and hyperbolic comets

    Decarbonization practices and disclosure in the nexus of waste-food-energy using digital technologies in the framework of a hydrogen economy

    This chapter analyses the decarbonization practices adopted by the firms in the nexus of waste-food-energy (WFE) under the hydrogen economy lens. It identifies the linkages between the digital technologies adopted by firms for reducing carbon emissions and financial performance, operational performance, and sustainability performance. This chapter discusses the digital technologies for reducing emissions in the production processes and the role of renewable energy in decarbonization practices. Although the issues are complex in the nexus of waste-food-energy, an analysis of the literature and main reports published by international organizations was developed to identify these linkages. This chapter also tries to understand how the literature has investigated corporate reporting on decarbonization practices supported by technology and using renewable resources in the hydrogen economy, i.e. Hydrogen Disclosure. Institutional, legitimacy and stakeholder theories support this study

    Digital knowledge management in agile self-tuning organisations: a multiple case study

    Purpose: Given the evolution that knowledge management (KM) has undergone since the advent of the digital transition, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate how KM processes have changed as a result of agile organisations’ adoption of digital technologies. Design/methodology/approach: Years have passed since the onset of the fourth industrial revolution, and the technologies unique to this revolution have permeated every organisation to varying degrees. Whether organisations have been at the forefront of technological innovation or have had to adapt to much more advanced digitised processes, they have had to change how they manage operations internally and with the remainder of the supply chain they serve. These changes have been much more significant for agile organisations, which rely heavily on digital systems and have strong supplier and customer interactions. Due to the large amount of data generated, these organisations are referred to as knowledge-intensive businesses, and as a result, their KM processes are of the utmost importance. For this reason, a multiple case study with a grounded theory approach has been implemented to carry out a field analysis. Findings: The results show that Industry 4.0 technological advances can be included in the scientific debate on KM and agile innovation, given the effects that such technologies have on organisations. Originality/value: In today’s increasingly connected world, these findings have the potential to generate significant economic value by improving coordination and collaboration in KM processes

    High-speed Boulders and the Debris Field in DART Ejecta

    On 2022 September 26 the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft collided with Dimorphos, the moon of the near-Earth asteroid 65803 Didymos, in a full-scale demonstration of a kinetic impactor concept. The companion Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) spacecraft documented the aftermath, capturing images of the expansion and evolution of the ejecta from 29 to 243 s after the impact. We present results from our analyses of these observations, including an improved reduction of the data and new absolute calibration, an updated LICIACube trajectory, and a detailed description of the events and phenomena that were recorded throughout the flyby. One notable aspect of the ejecta was the existence of clusters of boulders, up to 3.6 m in radius, that were ejected at speeds of up to 52 m s−1. Our analysis of the spatial distribution of 104 of these boulders suggests that they are likely the remnants of larger boulders shattered by the DART spacecraft in the first stages of the impact. The amount of momentum contained in these boulders is more than 3 times that of the DART spacecraft, and it is directed primarily to the south, almost perpendicular to the DART trajectory. Recoil of Dimorphos from the ejection of these boulders has the potential to change its orbital plane by up to a degree and to impart a non-principal-axis component to its rotation state. Damping timescales for these phenomena are such that the Hera spacecraft, arriving at the system in 2026, should be able to measure these effects

    Analyzing Intersectional Ableist and Fatphobic Discourses in Digital Spaces. The Case of TikTok

    Medicalized definitions of obesity and disability classify them as conditions under which people experience serious physical and psychological pathologies affecting the body (WHO, 2022a, 2022b), having severe implications in their daily lives and forcing them to face inequalities at the personal, social, political, and cultural levels. There is currently no agreement on whether obesity is a disability (Puhl et al., 2021); nevertheless, ableism and fatphobia frequently intersect (Flint & Snook, 2015), accentuating weight and disability stigma in offline and online environments (Balirano & Hughes, 2020a; Nisco, 2020; Hughes & Nisco, 2022; Raffone, 2022a, 2022b; Nisco, 2023). As Goffman (1963: 3) points out, stigma is “an attribute that is deeply discrediting” and it is caused by stereotypes and mental models embedded in society. Hate Speech against fat people has been attested in literature, especially concerning their representation in the press (Brookes & Baker, 2021; Coltman-Patel, 2023) and in social media spaces (SMSs) (Chou et al., 2014; Balirano & Hughes, 2020b). Indeed, although social media have become places where counteracting narratives around these issues are shared, and several anti-discrimination laws have been spread over the years, Hate Speech Online (HSO) is still pervasive. Despite the abovementioned research, to the best of our knowledge, no investigations have been conducted so far on fatphobia at its intersection with ableism in SMSs. Accordingly, this paper will examine an under-researched form of HSO, namely discriminatory behaviours against fat people with disabilities, through a quantitative (Kilgarriff, 2012; Kilgarriff et al., 2004) and qualitative (KhosraviNik, 2017; van Dijk, 2014) approach, to provide insights into how hateful intersectional discourses on disability and obesity/fatness are construed and enacted, focusing on how social media users participate in the process of meaning production

    Comparative evaluation of Thiram detection by LSPR based fiber optic probes with different nanostructures

    In this work, we present an experimental investigation of highly sensitive optical fiber sensors utilizing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), achieved by depositing gold nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostars (NSs) onto uncladded silica multi-mode fiber. NSs unique optical characteristics are explored in this configuration and spherical NPs are also examined for comparison. The sensitivity to surrounding medium refractive index was equal to about 440 nm/RIU for an LSPR generated by the NS, whereas in the case of NPs it was only 130 nm/RIU. As a case study, the sensors were also employed to detect Thiram, a widely used harmful agricultural pesticide, demonstrating a broad detection range from 10 nM to 100 mu M and a significant wavelength shift up to 7 nm. This study underscores the simplicity, affordability, and superior performance of NS-based optical fiber sensors, positioning them as a highly promising solution for applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and chemical detection

    This paper aims to identify, within the complex set of legislative provisions comprising the Omnibus Package, those that directly or indirectly affect the current regulatory framework governing the assurance of sustainability reporting. These provisions are briefly grouped into a few categories: amendments to the assurance standards regime, the narrowing of the informational scope of sustainability reporting, and the broader scope granted to voluntary reporting. For the latter two categories, the paper seeks to illustrate the likely effects on assurance, emphasizing the need to preserve the level of reliability that assurance is intended to guarantee
