Italian NEETs in 2012–2021: job search channels and labour market reforms
Purpose
For many years, Italy has been the EU country with the highest share of NEETs. The causes are the high level of unemployment, the inefficacy of the education system to provide the practical skills to prepare young people for work and the underdeveloped institutions that should help young people find a job. This paper aims to study NEETs from 2012 to 2021, focusing on the role exerted by the channels used to find a job and public employment services, analysing the effects of two important labour market reforms in force in these years: the Youth Guarantee Fund and citizenship income.
Design/methodology/approach
The analysis is based on SARIMAX models applied to the time series constructed from the labour force survey data using a four-week periodicity. ACF and PACF patterns were used to estimate the parameters.
Findings
Results show a great propensity of Italian young people to use informal channels and direct applications to employers, while the public and private employment agencies do not significantly contribute to the job search process. The citizenship income shows a statistically significant reduction in the share of NEETs, while no significant effects arise for the Youth Guarantee.
Originality/value
The paper makes an important contribution to the knowledge of the role of the different job search channels in helping young people find a job and on the effects of the recent labour market reforms

Evaluating the capability of tannic acid-modified biochar in sequestering metal ions and in enhancing soil health
Pollution of soils is one of the currently significant environmental concerns. Heavy metals that contaminate the soil can have harmful effects on crops, enter the food chain, and pose a threat to human health. Various approaches have been employed in the past to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils for agricultural use, including the use of biochar and its modified forms through physical or chemical methods. In the present study, the suitability of tannic acid as a biochar modifier was evaluated for the first time with the aim of enhancing its ability to adsorb Cd and Pb, thereby reducing their transfer from soil to plants. A mesocosm trial was set-up using three treatments: control, unmodified biochar, and tannic acid-modified biochar and their impact was evaluated on soil characteristics and plant physiology. The FT-IR spectra demonstrate that tannic acid-modified biochar considerably improved its capability to absorb Cd but worsened those for Pb and this occurred due to an increase in oxygen-containing functional groups and a reduction in total pore volume, respectively. Tannic acid-modified biochar application increased the carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the soil, as well as the microbial biomass and activities. Lettuce plants grown on soil amended with modified biochar accumulated a low Cd amount in roots but a high Pb amount in leaves that reduced the photosynthetic pigments and the photosynthetic rates and increased the antioxidant response. It is found that tannic acid treatment of biochar is effective for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils but not for those polluted by Pb

Aberrant Expression of Non-Coding RNAs in Pediatric T Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Their Potential Application as Biomarkers
Less than 5% of the DNA sequence encodes for proteins, and the remainder encodes for non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Among the members of the ncRNA family, microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a pivotal role in the insurgence and progression of several cancers, including leukemia. Thought to have different molecular mechanisms, both miRNAs and lncRNAs act as epigenetic factors modulating gene expression and influencing hematopoietic differentiation, proliferation and immune system function. Here, we discuss the most recent findings on the main molecular mechanisms by which miRNAs and lncRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of pediatric T acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), pointing out their potential utility as therapeutic targets and as biomarkers for early diagnosis, risk stratification and prognosis. miRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of T-ALL, acting both as tumor suppressors and as oncomiRs. By contrast, to the best of our knowledge, the literature highlights lncRNAs as acting only as oncogenes in this type of cancer by inhibiting apoptosis and promoting cell cycle and drug resistance. Additionally, here, we discuss how these molecules could be detected in the plasma of T-ALL patients, highlighting that lncRNAs may represent a new class of promising accurate and sensitive biomarkers in these young patients. Thus, the unveiling of the aberrant signature of circulating and intracellular levels of lncRNAs could have great clinical utility for obtaining a more accurate definition of prognosis and uncovering novel therapeutic strategies against T-ALL in children. However, further investigations are needed to better define the standard methodological procedure for their quantification and to obtain their specific targeting in T-ALL pediatric patients
Complexity, Frictions, and Evolution in Service Ecosystems
This conceptual work focuses on service ecosystems dynamics, since they can be crucial for innovation, resilience, and sustainability. Specifically, in this chapter these dynamics have been considered in relation to actors’ perspectives and perceptions on service ecosystem complexity and frictions. Recognizing the importance of such elements in the evolution of service ecosystems, it offers a framework for matching the three service ecosystem complexity states (ordered, manageable, and free complexity), the most common frictions (dilemmas, trade-offs, and paradoxical tensions), and the main systems dynamics drivers (emergence and institutionalization). It also provides illustrations in the realm of healthcare systems and their relations with digitalization and new technologies. The study offers labels for contexts and supports the selection of strategies to cope with complexity and related frictions to both academics and practitioners
Accounting and Accountability in the Transition to Zero-Carbon Energy for Climate Change: A Systematic Literature Review
This study investigates the body of literature on decarbonization management practices that use renewable resources and green
technologies to meet zero-carbon energy targets for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 to ‘Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts’. Starting with the ongoing discussion surrounding the development of an information architecture to support effective decision-making in decarbonization processes, this study explores the role of accounting models in measuring and reporting decarbonization effects and accountability models that ensure that firms track progress, take responsibility for their environmental and social impacts and address challenges. These models guide resource allocation and adoption of green technologies to meet sustainability targets. A systematic literature review (SLR) was performed to clarify how scholars have addressed issues regarding zero-carbon energy for mitigating climate change through accounting and accountability models. SLR was performed on 319 English articles published in the Scopus database and Google Scholar between 1990 and 2024. The results highlight that firms face extensive pressure from stakeholders and regulatory bodies regarding the legitimacy and transparency of decarbonization practices to meet zero-carbon energy requirements. The content analysis results revealed that sustainability reporting is useful for firms in rethinking decarbonization initiatives and linking them to the achievement of zero-carbon energy goals. Accounting and accountability models that embrace green technologies and renewable resources have increased institutional and stakeholder acceptance. This study is the first to examine how accounting and accountability systems can play a key role in firms through integrated thinking, which moves from integrated zero-carbon
reporting to zero-carbon energy and the adoption of green technologies in decarbonization processes. This approach allowed us to discover accounting and accountability models through sustainable thinking for integrated accountability reporting during the twin transition process
Young Consumers’ Preferences for Natural Wine: An Italian Exploratory Study
Although much has been written about sustainable wine con sumption, the topic of young consumers’ (age 18–39 years) preferences for natural wine in Italy has been poorly explored. Through an online survey of 640 Italian respondents, we investigate the characteristics that affect consumption of natural wine in Italy. First, a factor analysis was applied to reduce data to a smaller set of summary variables. A probit regression model was then used to explore the effects and evaluate the relative importance of identified factors on participants’ willingness to consume natural wine. The results reveal that being female, in the older age cohort (25–39 years), and being consumer of certified wine and/or biodynamic wine significantly increase the probability of drinking natural wine. The findings also showed that health benefits, natural product interest, previous experience with natural wine, and positive perception of natural wine also drive young consumers of natural wine
