    Mutual gains through sustainable employability investments: Integrating HRM practices for organisational competitiveness

    Purpose This study aims to examine the reciprocal relationship between employee and employer, focusing on the role of human resource management (HRM) practices in enhancing both employee career potential and organisational competitiveness. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how these practices interact to foster mutual growth in dynamic organisational environments. Design/methodology/approach A multiple-case study design of 10 food industry firms in the Netherlands and Belgium was employed, combining semi-structured interviews with archival analysis to generate in-depth insights. Findings The study highlights how balanced HRM strategies – integrating employee-centric practices, such as training and well-being programmes, with employer-centric practices, such as performance management and strategic recruitment – drive mutual benefits. Our findings underscore the importance of aligning these practices to enhance workforce adaptability, reduce turnover and support innovation. Digital transformation is identified as a key enabler, facilitating flexible work arrangements, personalised training and efficient talent acquisition. Practical implications The study provides actionable insights for HR practitioners, emphasising the need for strategic HRM approaches that integrate employability and sustainability and employability. These strategies can foster a resilient workforce capable of adapting to evolving organisational and environmental challenges. Originality/value This research advances our theoretical understanding in this domain by applying social exchange theory, resource-based view and stakeholder theory to the study of sustainable HRM. It offers a multi-dimensional framework to explore the reciprocal dynamics between employer and employee, contributing to ongoing discussions on sustainable workforce development and organisational competitiveness

    Exploring Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors Toward Antibiotics Use Among Adolescents in Southern Italy

    Background: This study explored knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding antibiotics among adolescents. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from February to April 2024. Results: Overall, 65.2% of adolescents believed that antibiotics should only be used when prescribed, this was more likely among women and those who needed additional information regarding antibiotics. Women and adolescents without a parent with a chronic disease, who believed that it is not possible to stop antibiotics when symptoms improve and who disagreed that antibiotics are faster treatment for flu were more likely to prefer prescribed antibiotics. Antibiotic use without a medical prescription was reported by 37.4% of participants, and this was more likely among men and adolescents who had a parent with a chronic disease, who needed additional information regarding antibiotics, and who disagreed that antibiotics should only be used when prescribed. Adolescents who are afraid that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) may affect their health, who received previous information about AMR, who know that antibiotics are not useful for viral infection treatment, and who need additional information regarding antibiotics, were more likely to believe that it is important to talk about AMR at school. Conclusions: Interventions on AMR and antibiotic use among adolescents are needed

    Effect of polyphenolic extracts from leaves of Mediterranean forage crops on enzymes involved in the oxidative stress, and useful for alternative cancer treatments

    In this investigation, we report the ability of polyphenolic extracts from leaves of Lotus ornithopodioides, Hedysarum coronarium, Medicago sativa, and Cichorium intybus to affect the activity of key enzymes involved in the cellular redox balance, such as catalase (CAT) and xanthine oxidase (XO). The tested extracts presented a different polyphenol composition; in fact, while L. ornithopodioides and H. coronarium extracts mainly contained condensed tannins (HcCT and LoCT, respectively), M. sativa, and C. intybus extracts were richer in flavonoids (CiF and MsF, respectively). These condensed tannins (CTs) or flavonoids-containing extracts, had a similar although moderate inhibition strength towards CAT (IC50 28–53 μM) with mixed inhibition mechanisms. On the other hand, among the four extracts, MsF caused a clear dose-dependent reduction of the XO activity (IC50 15 μM), followed at a distance by CiF (IC50 83 μM). Interestingly, both flavonoid-containing extracts displayed a competitive inhibition mechanism. Vice versa, those containing CT resulted almost ineffective in the inhibition of XO activity. Finally, we evaluated the effects exerted by these plant extracts on the viability of human gastric cancer cells. Using MKN-28 and AGS as a cellular model for this investigation, we found that, among the four extracts, MsF was endowed with the highest cytotoxicity, thus suggesting its putative use in anticancer treatments

    This paper aims to explore the didactic potential of culturomics in the context of teaching French as a foreign language (FFL), particularly with regard to addressing cultural content. After defining culturomics as an emerging discipline and establishing its connections with the didactics of language and culture, we will introduce the lexicometric tool Gallicagram, which enables linguistic exploitation of large diachronic corpora. The objective is to demonstrate how certain uses of this tool can support the understanding of linguistic and cultural evolutions of specific lexical items. In this perspective, and in order to illustrate the pedagogical value of lexicometric tools in addressing the cultural dimension of vocabulary, we will propose a didactic sequence focused on the lexicon of fashion.La présente contribution se propose d’examiner les potentialités didactiques de la culturomique en classe de FLE, en particulier en ce qui concerne la prise en compte de la dimension culturelle. Après avoir défini la culturomique comme discipline émergente et établi ses liens avec la didactique des langues-cultures, nous présenterons l’outil lexicométrique Gallicagram, qui permet l’exploitation linguistique de vastes corpus diachroniques. Il s’agira de montrer en quoi cet outil peut faciliter la compréhension des évolutions linguistiques et culturelles de certaines unités lexicales. Dans cette perspective, et afin d’illustrer l’intérêt pédagogique des outils lexicométriques pour appréhender la dimension culturelle du lexique, nous proposerons une séquence didactique centrée sur le lexique de la mode

    Le fondazioni su pali di viadotti sono in genere sottoposte a carichi fortemente inclinati ed eccentrici per effetto di azioni accidentali, come il vento, il terremoto, i sovraccarichi dovuti al transito dei treni o di veicoli pesanti. In tale circostanza, la verifica nei confronti di meccanismi di collasso che comportano la mobilitazione della resistenza del terreno deve tenere conto della natura multi-componente dei carichi applicati. L’approccio dominante di progetto è basato sul calcolo indipendente della capacità portante per carichi verticali, eventualmente eccentrici, e della capacità laterale. Per entrambe le verifiche, sono stati sviluppati di recente alcuni criteri fondati sul concetto di diagramma di interazione. Nel primo caso la verifica può essere svolta con una soluzione esatta basata sui teoremi dell’analisi limite del dominio di collasso nel piano carico assiale-momento, in cui si può tenere conto della direzione del vettore momento risultante. Nel secondo caso, invece, la verifica può essere svolta utilizzando una soluzione approssimata ottenuta mediante il metodo dell’equilibrio limite globale che tiene conto della dipendenza della capacità laterale della fondazione dalla distribuzione dei carichi assiali sui pali. Nel confronto con i criteri convenzionali, i metodi più recenti offrono innegabili vantaggi nel progetto delle fondazioni sui pali dei viadotti. Malgrado questi avanzamenti, i meccanismi di interazione fra carico laterale e momento non sono stati ancora pienamente compresi, sicché l’applicazione dei criteri più recenti può comportare una sottostima o sovrastima della capacità portante, a seconda delle assunzioni sul contributo dei momenti di snervamento. Nell’articolo si propone un approccio basato sul metodo dell’equilibrio limite per la costruzione dei domini di collasso nello spazio delle azioni in cui si tiene conto compiutamente dei meccanismi di interazione fra le componenti del carico risultante incorporando esplicitamente la capacità flessionale della sezione del palo

    Adsorption of Methylene Blue on Metakaolin-Based Geopolymers: A Kinetic and Thermodynamic Investigation

    Metakaolin-based geopolymers with different molar ratios of Si/Al were synthesized and utilized as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) as a model cationic dye from aqueous solution. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the synthesized geopolymers. The influence of the main operation conditions on the adsorption kinetics of MB onto the geopolymer was examined under various operating conditions. Results showed a significant maximum MB adsorption capacity at the temperature of 30 °C for all four types of geopolymers studied (designated as A, B, C, and D) up to 35.3, 23.6, 25.5, and 19.0 mg g−1, respectively. The corresponding order of Si/Al ratio was A < C < B < D. Adsorption kinetics was so fast and reached equilibrium in 10 min, and the experimental results were described using the adsorption dynamic intraparticle model (ADIM). The equilibrium data for MB removal was in agreement with the Langmuir isotherm

    Assessment of direct rainfall and flood-induced damage to land transport infrastructure using two-dimensional HEC-RAS 6.6 rain-on-grid simulations

    This study explores the application of the Rain-on-Grid approach within the two-dimensional (2D) Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS, version 6.6) for a selected area (~ 230 km2) of the Low Calore River catchment in Southern Italy, which was heavily hit by an extreme rainfall event on October 14–15, 2015. This event, lasting about 17 h, triggered a range of geo-hydraulic phenomena, including extensive flooding of the Calore River, with physical damage to the railway infrastructure. The hydrodynamic model was used to reconstruct the effects of the observed rainfall event by including relevant processes such as spatially distributed rainfall, upstream discharge input, infiltration losses, and flow propagation across hillslopes and within the Calore River. The results demonstrate that 2D Rain-on-Grid HEC-RAS simulations, which account for the minor tributary network, can reproduce realistic correlations with recorded damage to linear transport infrastructure. The comparison with a traditional fluvial flooding approach, where a given discharge hydrograph is used as the only input to the hydrodynamic model, shows that the traditional approach fails to evaluate the activation of the minor tributary network, leading to an underestimation of potential infrastructure damages, and the inability to explain observed damages. These results suggest that hazard maps should explicitly model pluvial and compound pluvial-fluvial flooding when assessing risks to transportation networks. However, the findings also highlight certain limitations, including the need for more detailed and spatially distributed input data and increased computational time
