This study examines life satisfaction and future expectations among young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) in Italy using a mixed-method approach. Based on a sample of 930 individuals aged 25-29, the research explores both the hedonic and eudaimonic dimensions of well-being. Study 1 employs a binary logit model to analyze the impact of socio-demographic factors, self-efficacy, and trauma-related symptoms (TSC) on life satisfaction. Findings indicate higher life satisfaction among women, caregivers, individuals with higher education, and those from southern regions. Additionally, self-efficacy positively influences well-being, whereas trauma-related symptoms have a negative effect. Study 2 utilizes text mining techniques to examine NEETs’ aspirations, revealing a predominant focus on employment, stability, and family. Gender and regional disparities underscore the need for targeted policy interventions to address psychological and socio-economic barriers. This research highlights the importance of integrated strategies to enhance NEETs’ life satisfaction and future outlook

A Strategy to Set up Test Dataset and Evaluation Benchmark for Radar Nowcasting of Precipitation in Italy

Prediction of extreme precipitation with high spatial resolution on short time scales (i.e., nowcasting) is still challenging, and data-driven approaches such as artificial intelligence tools are increasingly being used. In this respect, two factors are undoubtedly important: i) the need of robust databases of temporal and spatial evolution of rain precipitation patterns to train new nowcasting routines and ii) the establishment of an exhaustive benchmark to evaluate the improvements brought by new prediction algorithms. This paper aims to contribute to the two points just mentioned by describing a novel practical-to-use radar data screening method and by analyzing the performance of nine existing radar nowcasting techniques to establish a minimum acceptable performance (MAP) level. The radar dataset used consists of 111955 frames (1.5 year of data) at 1 × 1 km2 resolution sampled 5 min apart over Italy, a country scarcely investigated so far in terms of radar nowcasting compared to other areas, and that may be considered a climate change hot-spot. The results reveal a large variability in the performance of each tested nowcasting method, an aspect often not considered in similar studies but that evidences as the differences among the skills of various nowcasting methods can be systematically masked by the natural variability of each prediction outcome. The seasonal dependence of the nowcasting capacity is also shown and linked to the presence of orographic convective precipitation that occurs in Italy during the summer season. This last point also suggests for the future the need to implement convection-specific nowcasting modules, possibly optimized on local areas to improve the forecasting skills in case of atmospheric instability

The Great Filter? A Preliminary Study on Metaverse and Sustainable Food Consumer

    No full text
Collective virtual spaces are increasing attention from scholars and practitioners due to their potential to lead business growth while reducing environmental impacts. The Metaverse, with its immersive digital presence and virtual economies, serves as a prominent example, particularly in industries such as food. The existing literature on its adoption in the sector is still limited. Therefore, this study employs Mini Focus Groups with Italian Metaverse experts and a binary logistic regression model to identify the key factors influencing the adoption of the Metaverse in the food sector. It focuses on Italy due to its cultural-, economic-, and sector-specific dynamics in the sector, where the Metaverse could play a transformative role. Technological and regulatory uncertainties, as well as security risks, are the main obstacles which, according to experts, should deter consumers from embracing food purchases in the Metaverse. On the other hand, this study highlights several facilitating factors that can encourage adoption, also contributing to the achievement of SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production. These include performance expectancy, effort expectancy, perceived behavior, hedonic motivation, and consumer innovativeness. These factors are likely to drive consumer engagement with Metaverse-based food platforms. The results provide interesting insights into which factors, according to experts, would influence people’s willingness to purchase food products within the Metaverse, in view of the possible development of a new market for food products. This study provides a significant contribution to scholars and practitioners by shedding light on the main factors influencing consumer adoption of the Metaverse

Plural masculinities at work: Generational cohorts, organizational culture, and men’s work-life choices

Purpose. This study explores how different conceptions of masculinity—ranging from traditional breadwinner models to more egalitarian frameworks—influence men’s engagement with work-life balance policies. It examines how generational differences intersect with supervisory attitudes and organizational culture in shaping men’s decisions to use family-friendly policies. Design/Methodology/Approach. A qualitative research design was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with 45 men from three generational cohorts: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials/Generation Z. The study applied an iterative, inductive analysis to explore how masculinities are expressed and negotiated in relation to work-life practices. Findings. The analysis identifies three core themes: (i) Masculinity Continuum (Traditional vs. Evolving), (ii) Supervisory and Cultural Norms, and (iii) Internal Conflict (Career Prioritization vs. Family Engagement). Older participants tended to align with hegemonic masculinity and avoid policy use, while younger men embraced more egalitarian models. Leadership and workplace norms played a central role in reinforcing or challenging gendered expectations around work-life engagement. Practical Implications. Organizations should move beyond policy availability and foster inclusive cultures where men feel supported in reconciling work and family roles. Supervisors play a crucial role in modeling alternative masculinities and legitimizing the use of family-friendly policies, particularly in contexts where traditional norms persist. Originality. This study contributes to work-family literature by integrating Connell’s theory of multiple masculinities with empirical insights on generational dynamics and organizational influence. It highlights how identity, leadership, and culture interact to shape men’s engagement with work-life practices—an area often overlooked in both gender and organizational research

Predicting ground-level nitrogen dioxide concentrations using the BaYesian attention-based deep neural network

    No full text
Nitrogen dioxide pollution is an ongoing and growing environmental issue that affects human health in developed Western countries. This study introduced a Bayesian attention-based deep neural network model for predicting ground-level nitrogen dioxide concentrations. The proposed model integrates the principles of the Bayesian neural network and the attention mechanism, enabling it to produce predicted values and their associated uncertainties, expressed as standard deviations. The proposed model was validated using 2020 data collected from 520 European Environmental Agency stations, located in Italy. The performance of the model was assessed using the mean absolute error

Digital-Driven Circular Ecosystems for the Textile Sector: Insights from a Survey on Sustainable Practices in Italy

    No full text
The textile industry is among the most environmentally impactful sectors, underscoring the urgency of transitioning to circular economy models. This study examines the development of a digital-driven circular ecosystem for the Italian textile sector, leveraging insights from a comprehensive survey on sustainable practices. By analyzing material flows and identifying inefficiencies, the research proposes an integrated framework to enhance sustainability across the supply chain. Key indicators are established to monitor environmental, economic, and social impacts, offering a practical tool for decision-making. The findings reveal how scenario-based approaches and targeted strategies can empower Italian textile companies to adopt circular practices effectively. This work lays the groundwork for a robust ecological transition, fostering both environmental sustainability and competitive advantage in the global market

A tal uopo, l’art.
