Sleep quality among Italian university students: the UnSleep multicenter study

    No full text
Background. Scientific evidence demonstrates that poor sleep quality can lead to various health problems. This study aimed to investigate sleep patterns among Italian university students and identify several factors that may contribute to its quality. Study design. Cross-sectional study. Methods. An electronic questionnaire regarding sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, and sleep-related habits, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, was distributed between January 2022 and July 2023 among students belonging to 12 universities located in Northern, Central, and Southern Italy. Results. On a total of 1, 674 questionnaires collected, the participants (mean age 24.06±4.56 years, 71.3% F) reported an average number of hours of nocturnal sleep equal to 6.89±1.28 hours. A total of 927 (54.6%) of respondents showed a poor sleep quality (PSQI >5). Regression analysis showed that better sleep quality is associated with lower age, attending universities in Northern Italy, less time spent on electronic devices during the day, not being used to study at night and not playing videogames before sleep. Conclusion. From a public health perspective, our findings suggest that public health operators should raise the awareness of young adults about the importance of sleep quality for maintaining good health, as well as the impact that certain behaviors can have on sleep

    Impatto clinico della mucosite orale

    No full text
Oral Mucositis is a common and debilitating condition. It is characterized by acute, painful and/or ulcerative lesions of the oral cavity. It frequently occurs in individuals undergoing antineoplastic therapy. The severity of its manifestation is critical, as it can significantly influence the quality of life, treatments adherence, and oncological outcomes. This has important clinical and economic implications

Body image perception and satisfaction in Italian athletes, gym practitioners and inactive individuals

    No full text
Background: Body image refers to a person's perception of her/his own body. Currently, the media and most of the social settings place significance on having a thin body. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between body image perception and satisfaction and some lifestyle-related factors such as weight status, sedentary habits and engagement in physical activity among sport athletes, gym practitioners and inactive individuals. Methods: An observational study with a cross-sectional design was carried out. An electronic questionnaire was used to assess participants' characteristics and engagement in physical activity. Perception and satisfaction of body image were assessed using Stunkard's figures. Results: One hundred-and-five (33.5%) of the participants were inactive, 107 were gym practitioners and 101 practiced different sport disciplines. The inactive group had a higher percentage of participants desiring to be thinner and a lower percentage desiring to be bigger, while the athlete group had a higher percentage expressing satisfaction with their current body image. Body satisfaction was found to be related with training volume. Conclusions: This study highlights the significant associations between body image perception, satisfaction, and lifestyle factors such as physical activity levels and sedentary habits. Athletes reported greater body satisfaction compared to inactive individuals, emphasizing the potential role of regular physical activity in fostering a positive body image. These findings underscore the importance of promoting active lifestyles to improve both physical and psychological well-being

Reductive coefficients for pseudo-static analysis of seismic toppling of rock blocks

    No full text
The numerical investigation of the rocking response of freestanding slender rock blocks showed that the pseudo-static criterion, based on the application of peak ground acceleration in seismic stability analyses, is often too conservative. This approach, largely widespread in design codes, is not able to capture overturning potential but only indicates the uplift condition. This study presents the results of overturning analyses of rectangular rock blocks in plane conditions considering also the presence of a rear wall, that is a typical scenario for the rock blocks completely detached from the cliff but close to it. Validation of this new model has been conducted by comparing literature results for idealized simple cyclic pulses as excitation. A sample of 149 recorded earthquake motions on rock soil (from US, Europe and Asia), characterized by different range of PGA, PGV Arias Intensity, energy flux and frequency content, has been used as input seismic excitation. The numerical analyses, carried out for different distances between the block and the rear wall, showed the detrimental effect of the wall for the toppling potential. At the same time, also in this case, the pseudo-static application of PGA in seismic stability analyses appears conservative. The paper is mainly addressed to the evaluation of a cautious reductive coefficient, to be applied to the PGA, in order to carry out pseudo-static rocking stability analyses. Furthermore, a critical analysis on motion parameters showed that PGV is a good index for the toppling potential of the blocks, as already shown in literature

New Legislative Approach with Old Legislative Tools: the recent (ab)use of regulations in European Union Law

    No full text
In recent years, there has been a clear preference by the European legislator for regulations rather than directives. This trend has raised some doubts about the legitimacy of this choice, especially in the light of the apparent exclusion of Member States, who, otherwise, with directives enjoy greater room for manoeuvre. The article, starting from statistical data, analyses the legal reasons behind this choice and highlights specific features of the latest regulations. In particular, the use of the technique of deferring application with respect to the date of entry into force, together with the extensive use of implementing acts, suggests that most new regulations depart from the formal distinction enshrined in Article 288 TFEU. This observation leads us to reflect on the practical consequences of many recently adopted regulations, both in terms of substantive effects and in terms of Member States participation in the legislative process. In conclusion, this paper aims to demonstrate how, although widely used, new regulations have traits that still guarantee national legal systems a prominent role for the full application of EU law

An assessment procedure to measure and improve the maintenance management information practices maturity: a case study

    No full text
Purpose This article presents a procedure for assessing the maturity of maintenance management information practices and defining improvement actions. It focuses on supporting companies, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in determining their information technology (IT) needs and introducing suitable informative infrastructures. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive procedure for assessing the maturity of maintenance management information practices and defining improvement actions is proposed. It consists of five steps: designing the current state of maintenance, identifying IT needs based on maintenance goals, applying an assessment model to identify weaknesses and strengths, proposing improvement actions based on maturity level and enabling continuous improvement. The procedure provides the applicability of the assessment model to evaluate the maturity levels of different databases: Equipment, Maintenance Personnel, Work Order and Report. Findings The model was applied to a company’s maintenance process. Improvement actions focusing on enhancing the informative infrastructure and improving information management practices have been designed based on the current maturity assessment. The findings and recommendations provide valuable insights for SMEs seeking to enhance their maintenance effectiveness and adopt appropriate IT solutions. Originality/value The proposed procedure and the maturity model contribute to the field of research by addressing the specific needs of SMEs in assessing their maintenance management information practices. The model provides a roadmap for SMEs to identify weaknesses, prioritize improvement actions and enable continuous improvement. By leveraging the benefits of information systems, SMEs can enhance their maintenance processes, increase competitiveness and achieve higher maturity levels in maintenance management
