Djibouti Country Handbook : highlights of ECA’s support to Djibouti 2019-2022
No full textECA assisted Djibouti in developing its national development plan for the period from 2020 to 2024. ECA has conducted an assessment of the social, economic and environmental contribution of the blue economy to overall development in Djibouti. For the study, ECA made use of the blue economy valuation toolkit designed by the Sub regional Office for Eastern Africa. The report described the institutional environment of the blue economy in Djibouti, situated the blue economy in national and sectoral development strategies, and provided insight into the potential of the blue economy in Djibouti. ECA provided technical support to improve the national tourism statistics system in Djibouti and to develop the country’s tourism satellite account. In line with its continuous support to its members, ECA developed a macroeconomic forecasting model for Djibouti in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Finance
Harmonized methods for informal cross border trade data collection critical in monitoring intra-African Trade
No full textInformal cross border trade in Africa is known to be large and an important contributor to the livelihoods of millions of Africans but there are no agreed methods to accurately measure it, experts said at the first physical meeting of the Task Force on developing a harmonized methodology for Informal CrossBorder Trade Data Collection. The Task Force was established by the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration with ECA and AFREXIMBANK, with a mandate to provide political and technical guidance to the process of developing the Continental Methodology for ICBT Data Collection and overseeing its implementation. The Taskforce has held two virtual meetings to deliberate on the definition and the components of the ICBT methodology. The current hybrid meeting will build on already existing work on ICBT within the continent

Keys to unlocking the full potential of the AfCFTA – a case study for Central Africa
No full textThe AfCFTA is a key opportunity for Central African governments to build upon regional integration strategies, aligning their national trade strategies as well as industrial strategies, to enhance intraregional trade as well as trade with continental partners. Trade strategies are linked to the productive capacity of each country, and therefore the development of trade strategies requires direct linkages with the National Industrialization Plans which, for Central Africa, advocate industrialization based on natural resources and driven by trade, in line with the Douala Consensus. Implementing a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model which captures international trade linkages and production capacity, the potential economic impacts of the AfCFTA on Central Africa region and its countries are examined. At present SRO-CA economic modelling includes results for 7 of 11 Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) member countries available in the GTAP Database used in economic modelling. Trade between ECCAS members and the rest of the continent increases across all products. Extra-continental trade decreases. The most important increases in trade for ECCAS as a sub region occur for heavy and light manufacturing as well as processed food

No full textThe present report provides an analysis of the macroeconomic developments from January to March 2023 and an outlook for the continent, in relation to economic growth, inflation and fiscal and monetary policies. The report provides an assessment of the composition of government expenditure in Africa, revealing that African Governments have a higher level of consumption expenditure and a lower level of capital expenditure than developed and emerging economies, which could hinder growth and debt sustainability, especially in the least developed countries in Africa. Policy recommendations based on the assessment are provided in the last section of the report
