No full textAfrica faces the tasks of expanding and strengthening its digital infrastructure, bridging the digital divide and skills gap, and fostering an environment that is conducive to digital innovation and growth. The importance of digital inclusion with a particular emphasis on gender equality, the need to avoid Internet fragmentation and the importance of harnessing emerging technologies through appropriate regulation has been underscored. On the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, marked in September 2020, the Secretary-General released a report titled “Our Common Agenda”, which contains a proposal for a global digital compact to be agreed at the Summit of the Future, to be held in September 2024. The aim of the Summit is to reinvigorate the global multilateral institutions for the 2030s and beyond through a technology track involving a wide range of stakeholders. It is expected that the global digital compact will “outline shared principles for an open, free and secure digital future for all”. In preparation for the Summit and the proposed digital compact, the United Nations is seeking inputs from a wide range of stakeholders. The global digital compact is an opportunity to reinterpret the collective approach to the best way to respond to the constantly changing digital society and accelerate progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals

No full textMany African countries are among the world’s most vulnerable to changes in ecological and climatic conditions. Moreover, nearly all countries of the continent are currently heavily indebted. They are thus caught in a vicious cycle: debt servicing reduces the fiscal space available for investments in climate change adaptation and mitigation or to address environmental degradation. Debt-for-nature and climate swaps allow countries with valuable biodiversity to charge others for its protection and provision as a global public good. Therefore, they could attract new funds or stakeholders and even generate additional revenue for these countries. However, despite their great potential, debt-for-nature and climate swaps remain, for the moment, a niche instrument in the financial market. In the present report, the feasibility of implementing debt-for-nature and climate swaps in Africa is assessed, together with their potential to leverage additional finance for climate actions while also reducing debt burdens. Consideration is given to how African countries could take advantage of the growing interest among investors in these instruments that protect biodiversity and respond to the climate crisis. The report also contains recommendations on how to best realize the promise of debt-for-nature swaps

En tant qu’organisateurs, nous avons estimé qu’il était important de se concentrer sur l’accélération du développement et sur la diffusion des technologies émergentes pour construire une Afrique verte, inclusive et résiliente. Les prix baissent beaucoup plus rapidement et aujourd’hui pour des technologies qui ont souvent mis 15 ans à voir le jour.
