Mainstreaming trade in national development strategies: an issue paper
This Issues Paper examines the integration of trade policies into national development strategies to enhance sustainable growth and poverty reduction in African economies. Emphasizing trade as a critical driver of external finance and competitiveness, it underscores the necessity of coherent, cross-ministerial coordination—particularly led by Finance Ministries—to align trade reforms with complementary policies in macroeconomics, regulation, education, and infrastructure. Challenges such as unintended consequences of protectionist measures (e.g., Ghana’s garment tariffs) highlight the complexity of policy design. The paper reviews Africa’s marginal position in global trade and the stalled Doha Development Round, stressing unresolved issues like agricultural subsidies, market access, and special treatment for developing nations. Domestically, addressing bottlenecks in trade finance, capacity building, and fiscal adjustments remains urgent. Regional integration is proposed as a pathway to global market integration, though slow progress on non-tariff barriers, rules of origin, and common external tariffs impedes advancement. The paper concludes that while multilateral cooperation and regional efforts are pivotal, overcoming domestic constraints and prioritizing strategic reforms are essential for Africa to harness trade’s transformative potential

Fellow research paper
This study explores the availability and accessibility of Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) focusing on mental health within Southern African workplaces. Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) programmes, particularly those addressing mental health, are critical for enhancing workplace health management. Through semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 employees via Microsoft Teams, the research examines the nature, extent, and effectiveness of these programmes. Findings reveal that mental health interventions are diverse, each with unique advantages and purposes. The study highlights employees' perceptions of these programmes and the support they receive, offering insights into their efficacy in addressing workplace mental health needs. However, the findings are limited to the experiences of 15 participants
Fellowship for Young African Professionals
This study examines the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on agricultural trade and welfare in Africa, focusing on tariff elimination and Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) reduction. Using gravity and general equilibrium analyses, the findings reveal that while both tariffs and NTMs affect agricultural imports, NTMs have a more significant negative impact. Simultaneously eliminating tariffs and streamlining NTMs is projected to boost agricultural exports by 43.38% and imports by 97.46%, with a 1.91% average welfare improvement. However, benefits are unevenly distributed, underscoring the need for targeted policies to support export sectors in less-benefiting countries

ERA 2025
Africa stands at a critical juncture in its development, with immense potential driven by a youthful population, rich natural resources, and expanding consumer markets. However, while economic growth has rebounded post-pandemic, it remains below pre-pandemic levels, limiting progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), launched in 2021, presents a transformative opportunity to accelerate trade-led integration and drive inclusive, sustainable development. The Economic Report on Africa 2025 (ERA 2025) examines AfCFTA’s implementation, highlighting achievements, challenges, and its potential to reshape Africa’s economic landscape. The report underscores AfCFTA’s role in addressing key challenges such as energy access, food security, industrialization, and digital trade. By fostering intra-African trade, the agreement can reduce commodity dependence, boost manufacturing, and strengthen Africa’s position in global value chains. Additionally, AfCFTA enhances Africa’s resilience amid global economic fragmentation by deepening regional integration and strengthening trade ties with emerging markets. To fully realize AfCFTA’s potential, Africa must undertake strategic investments, implement well-coordinated policies, and pursue structural reforms. If effectively executed, AfCFTA could significantly enhance trade, drive economic diversification, and position Africa as a global growth hub, contributing to the vision of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want
