Risk assessment of rock and ice avalanches and resulting cascading processes in High Mountain Asia
Climate-induced permafrost degradation and glacier retreat are destabilizing steep mountain slopes, especially in High Mountain Asia (HMA), where complex terrain and rapid cryospheric change are increasing the likelihood of large rock and ice avalanches (RIAs) and their cascading processes. These events threaten both high-altitude communities and rapidly expanding infrastructure networks. Yet, a systematic understanding of RIA risk across HMA remains limited, particularly in terms of how hazard, exposure, and vulnerability interact to shape outcomes.
This thesis aims to address this gap by integrating multi-source datasets and geospatial modeling to assess RIA-induced cascading hazards and their implications for critical infrastructure in HMA. The work is structured around three interrelated components that reflect the disaster risk framework: hazard processes, infrastructure exposure, and community vulnerability.
By linking physical hazard processes with infrastructure exposure and vulnerability dynamics, this research offers an integrated perspective on cryospheric hazard risk in HMA and beyond. The findings highlight the urgent need for multi-dimensional risk assessments that move beyond deterministic climate narratives and instead address the coupled physical and societal drivers of glacier disasters. Such integration is essential to anticipate future risks and guide the development of resilient infrastructure in high mountain regions.</p
The External Dimension of the Common Agricultural Policy: Shaping Rural Spaces in Georgia
Despite being one of the most controversial EU policies, little is known about whether and how the EU has encouraged the adoption of Common Agricultural Policy elements beyond its borders. This thesis investigates how the CAP is externally governed, how effective it has been, and what consequences it had on ‘rural spaces’, a concept developed in this thesis. It applies the external governance framework to two rural development instruments in Georgia and finds different modes of external governance within one policy framework, to be explained by domestic factors. Yet, despite differing modes and the absence of EU hierarchy, both instruments demonstrate similar consequences such as the ‘Europeanisation’ of rural spaces and the further empowerment of existing elites. Thereby, the thesis makes two conceptual contributions. First, it expands the concept of effectiveness in EU external governance. Second, it enhances connections between political geography and EU studies through the concept of rural space.</p
Mitotic and meiotic maintenance of stress memory in woodland strawberry
Environmental stresses can induce a wide range of phenotypic changes in plants and impact their epigenome. DNA methylation is one of the few heritable epigenetic marks and one of its main functions is to control transposable elements (TEs) activity. In this thesis, I investigated heritable genetic and epigenetic changes induced by environmental stresses in wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca sp.). Investigating DNA methylation dynamics during stress exposure in strawberry is of interest because of the ecological and economical importance of these plants. Furthermore, findings in strawberry may be transmittable to other plants in the Rosaceae family that have more complex genomes, including apple, peach, or roses. In addition, wild strawberry is an ideal model to study long-term memory processes given its dual modes of reproduction –sexually, through seeds, and –asexually through stolons.
Using global DNA methylation and transcriptomic approaches the objectives of this project were to:
(1) Test the impact of abiotic stress on the methylome and transcriptome of F. vesca.
(2) Screening for multi-generational persistence of heat-stress-induced changes in DNA methylation patterns. As well as their potential association with gene and TE silencing and/or activation.
(3) Investigate the memory persistence differences between asexual (or vegetative) and sexual reproduction.
(4) Screening to test if epigenetic changes can contribute to stress adaptation.
In this thesis, I show that the strawberry methylome as well as transcriptome respond with a high level of flexibility to ecologically relevant stresses. Notably, the epigenome is most affected by heat-stress. Moreover, I describe that heat-stress induced DNA methylation and transcriptome changes that can be maintained for at least three un-stressed asexual generations. Finally, I describe that first sexual generation from the maternal and their clonal daughter plants showed both shared and unique stress responses, suggesting there was an acquired molecular memory resulting from heat-stress perceived by an earlier generation.
In this work, I demonstrate that stresses can induce long-lasting transmittable epigenetic changes in strawberry. Furthermore, I unravel potential differences in the transmission of epigenetic memory between sexual and asexual reproduction.</p
Crack, the freebase form of cocaine, offers faster and more intense psychoactive effects due to its mode of administration by inhalation, while being of lower cost. These molecules act by blocking the reuptake of monoaminergic neurotransmitters, and their main effects stem from the rapid adrenergic response. The psychoactive effect is characterized by a marked surge of energy and social disinhibition. Crack consumption exacerbates the vulnerabilities of marginalized populations, requiring new approaches to address the social and health crises it generates. Since November 2024, a mobile team from HUG has deployed a street-based medical intervention, associated with intersectoral network work for a holistic and inclusive care approach
Homelessness is a growing social phenomenon in Europe and Switzerland. It is recognized that the homeless population has a poorer health status than the general population due to various barriers to accessing the healthcare system, including preventive health interventions. To meet these challenges, it is imperative to develop innovative and multisectoral approaches, focusing on health promotion, improving access to care, and coordinating efforts between the various actors in the social and healthcare sectors. Such an approach is being developed in Geneva, where a pilot project has been launched to address the specific health needs of homeless people. This project is based on a close collaboration between different health and social service providers, aiming at creating a care and support network that is accessible and adapted to this population
Tetra-Hetero Substituted Methanes: Synthesis, Properties, Stability and Resolution
