Henry James and the Question of 'Living'
No full textThis thesis seeks to better understand the significance of the word ‘life’ in Henry James’s oeuvre. My central claim is that James draws attention to the vague, ambiguous, and tautological ways in which this word is used in everyday speech, and that he does so in order to pose questions about the descriptive strategies we rely upon to make sense of our lives. Through close readings of a range of late works, I explore how commonplace ideas about ‘life’ are continually in the process of breaking down in James’s novels and tales, and argue that his narrative style works to deconstruct rigidly voluntaristic and deterministic conceptions of leading a life. A secondary argument concerns the presence of the word ‘life’ in James’s literary criticism. Going against the grain of scholarly consensus, I demonstrate that ‘life’ is a central term in James’s critical vocabulary, and suggest that it is deployed to invoke aspects of aesthetic experience and creation that cannot be accounted for in propositional terms. I claim that a phenomenological examination of this rhetorical gesture is necessary if we are to grasp the decisive role that James and the word ‘life’ played in the development of twentieth-century Anglophone literary criticism.</p
"Nouvelles couleurs, nouvelles jouissances" : la polychromie des boiseries françaises au siècle des Lumières
No full textDès la fin des années 1730, des peintures de diverses couleurs sont appliquées sur les lambris d'appartements avec force d'éclat et de richesse dans les coloris. Reformulant l'adage traditionnel, cette thèse montre qu'en matière de couleurs et de décors, les goûts et les couleurs se discutent et que leur changement est moins lié aux caprices de la mode qu'à des enjeux sociaux et économiques qu'il est difficile, mais nécessaire de reconstruire. Mon travail a ainsi consisté à documenter la matérialité de décors conçus pour des édifices d'habitation parfois disparus. L'objectif était de comprendre comment fonctionne la mise en corrélation chromatique d'objets de nature et de statuts différents. L'originalité de cette approche réside dans un déplacement du regard. Au lieu d'envisager les formes du décor, je propose de concentrer mon analyse sur les enjeux spécifiques de la couleur dans le système décoratif français du XVIIIe siècle
Le portfolio comme instrument de développement professionnel
No full textCette contribution porte sur la construction de l'identité professionnelle dans l'alternance en formation initiale universitaire de formateurs d'adultes. Elle explore la problématique de l'écriture performative et de ses rapports avec cette construction à partir de l'étude de portfolios de développement professionnel. Elle met en évidence que cet écrit représente, pour les étudiants, une sorte de rite de passage leur permettant de reconnaître et de faire reconnaître leur action comme ensemble d'activités doté de sens et de significations, et favorisant le développement de postures réflexives. C'est ici qu'intervient l'impact formateur du dispositif d'écriture comme interface structurante entre formation et travail
Profit and Risk in the Late Merchant Capitalism: the Soliers in the Spanish Colonial Market
No full textThis work aims to better assess the functioning of merchant capitalism through the analysis of profits and risks in the Spanish colonial market. Through accounting documents and the correspondence of the Solier family in Geneva, this work extracts information about financial and commercial profitability while linking them to maritime and commercial risks respectively. We observe profitability differences depending on the evolution of risks. We also give some insights about the network around the company Cayla, Cabanes, Solier et cie. which was the core of the Solier family’s investments in the Spanish colonial market.</p
Les théories des climats à l'épreuve d'un monde nouveau: adaptations d'un modèle explicatif à la Renaissance
No full textCette thèse porte sur les reprises et adaptations des théories antiques des climats à la Renaissance, dans le contexte géographique et philosophique des Grandes Découvertes. Elle aborde successivement quatre problématiques : celle de l'habitabilité de la zone torride, de la place du Nouveau monde dans ces théories, de la couleur de peau expliquée par le climat et des tensions et articulations entre pensée de l'influence du climat et philosophies cosmopolites. À travers l'analyse rapprochée de textes philosophiques, cosmographiques, viatiques, médicaux et fictifs, ce travail interroge l'évolution des représentations de l'effet du climat sur l'homme. Il montre que celle-ci conduit d'une conception latitudinale du climat au sens ancien vers une prise en compte des différents éléments du milieu naturel, laquelle mènera au sens moderne du climat. Mais il montre aussi que cette évolution n'est pas linéaire, et que les modèles anciens perdurent et resurgissent dans les textes, au XVIIe siècle encore

No full textThis thesis is divided into four projects exploring uncharted chemical space by DNA encoded library (DEL) screening and photoaffinity labeling. The first project highlights the discovery of dual Bcl-XL /Bcl-2 inhibitors discovered from DEL screening using a fragment pairing strategy. The second project focused on the discovery of a small molecule modulator of the mTORC2 pathway by targeting mSin1, discovered from a library designed to bind to Pleckstrin Homology domains. The third project proposed a chemical genetics investigation of Apicomplexan parasites, and the final project developed the premise of a new microenvironment mapping technology via bioluminescence

Embodying the Soundtrack: An Analytic Approach to the Corporeality of Film Music
No full textWhen coordinated, filmic image and soundtrack can afford an experience of corporeal resonance, involving kinesthetic, affective and haptic contents. This thesis analytically explores how music contributes to this phenomenon. To this end, embodied simulation theory is exploited (chap. 1) and complemented with analytic tools derived from ecological psychology (chap. 2) for application to sequences from post-2000 “popular genre” films (chap. 3). The corporeal affordances of the soundtracks are assessed in relation to potential individual, technological and sociocultural variations in the cinematic ecology (chap. 4). This research thus demonstrates the explanatory power of approaching the film soundtrack from an embodied perspective and opens up reflections on the entanglement of the “real” and the “virtual” in the viewing ecology, and on strategies of bodily involvement in other audiovisual media, formats and genres
On the role of PDX3 and vitamin B<sub>6</sub> in nitrogen metabolism and immunity in <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i>
No full textFor all living organisms, vitamin B6 supply is essential to the metabolic function of over two hundred enzymes that require it as a coenzyme. Several structurally related compounds form the vitamin B6 family and are interchangeable through salvage pathways. In the absence of the salvage pathway enzyme, PDX3, the balance of vitamin B6 in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana is disrupted which is paralleled with severe morphological impairments and perturbations in nitrogen metabolism and immunity. The aim of this thesis work is to understand the mechanism behind the various phenotypes associated with the lack of PDX3 as well as provide insight into the metabolic role of the enzyme. The findings in this work support a key role for PDX3 in nitrogen management, particularly serine metabolism and that salicylic acid is partly responsible for the pdx3 morphological phenotype. Perspectives on additional functions, regulation, and molecular partners PDX3 enzyme are also discussed. </p
The determinants of functional income distribution in Spain: a Kaleckian approach
No full textThis work focuses on the determinants of the declining labor share in Spain between 1995 and 2021. We focus on Spain for various reasons; first, because of an apparent lack of literature about the Spanish case, and second, because of its singular historical context and political economy that make it an interesting case study. We use a theoretical framework developed by Hein (2015) based on the Kaleckian model of growth and distribution. This framework allows us to analyze the effects of neoliberalism and financialization on income distribution. We also assess the effects of standard determinants of the labor share, such as trade globalization, financial globalization, and technological change. All our variables are integrated of order one, and given the limited size of our sample, we use an ARDL bound testing model, allowing us to distinguish between short- and long-term effects. The results confirm that the financialization process has a negative impact on the Spanish labor share, particularly through the weakening of workers’ bargaining power, the declining government activity, and the increasing financial activity. We do find that the standard variables advanced in the literature are also important determinants to consider.</p
