How local pig breed and processing methods affect consumer preferences for dry-cured ham
Two dry-cured hams were produced using a local breed Krškopolje pig, trimmed/shaped either as ‘Kraški pršut’ (Ksingle bondK) or ‘Istrski pršut’ (Isingle bondK). Consumers (n = 118) were recruited to evaluate the hams in blind, expected, and informed tests. Overall liking was rated on a 5-point Likert scale, while sensory perceptions were assessed with Check-All-That-Apply method in blind and expected tests. In blind, expected, and informed test, Ksingle bondK received higher liking scores than Isingle bondK. Specifically, for Ksingle bondK, liking was the highest in informed, the lowest in the blind, and intermediate in the expected test, suggesting that information about local breed positively influenced consumer perception. In contrast, Isingle bondK showed similar liking scores in both, blind and informed tests, while the expected liking was notably higher, indicating a mismatch between expectations and actual experience. Check-All-That-Apply results, analyzed with correspondence analysis, showed that Isingle bondK and Ksingle bondK hams were differentiated by consumers based on sensory descriptors. Impact of krill products on the growth, health, and fillet quality of farmed non-salmonid fish
The rising global demand for fish as a protein source has led to increased efforts to find sustainable alternatives to
reduce the dependency on traditional aquafeed ingredients like fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO). However, these
conventional ingredients face declining availability due to environmental and economic challenges. While
common alternatives to these ingredients, such as plant proteins and oils, reduce pressure on marine ecosystems
and provide nutrients, these alternatives have limitations, including the presence of anti-nutritional factors, lack
of essential long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), essential amino acids and reduced palatability. Therefore, high plant-based diets can present
issues in terms of fish performance, health and nutritional quality of aqua products for consumers. Furthermore,
plant-based ingredients, though cost-effective, possess sustainability challenges and do not support a more circular economy within the aquafeed sector. Novel eco-friendly ingredients, including insect meals, single-cell
proteins, and fish co-products are being explored; however, these still face regulatory, scalability, consumer
acceptance, and cost issues. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), presents a promising sustainable low trophic
alternative, as it represents the largest single species biomass. Krill products, particularly krill meal (KM), krill oil
(KO) and krill hydrolysate (KH), offer high-quality proteins, astaxanthin and phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty
acids (EPA and DHA), which are more bioavailable than traditional marine lipid sources. Further, commercially
available krill products are supported by extensive scientific evidence demonstrating their benefits in various fish
species when included in feeds. This review evaluates the benefits of krill products on the performance, health,
fillet quality and reproductive performance of non-salmonid farmed fish, focusing on studies from the 1980s to
the present. Several studies reported positive effects of krill products in enhancing growth performance, feed
conversion, and nutrient metabolism, as well as boosting stress resistance, survival, and health status. Krillsupplemented diets have also shown improvements in reproductive performance and fillet quality, though
research in these areas remains limited in non-salmonids. In addition, the regulatory framework governing
Antarctic krill harvesting ensures minimal environmental impact, sustainable sourcing, and traceability, aligning
with industry standards and consumer demands for eco-friendly products. Collectively, all these outcomes
support the inclusion of krill products in aquafeed formulations to non-salmonid fish species to enhance the
growth, health, fillet quality, and reproductive performance while addressing sustainability challenges. However,
the higher cost of krill products compared to the traditional feed ingredients may challenge the broader adoption
of krill diets. Therefore, to assess the cost-efficiency and optimal supplementation of aquafeeds with krill
products, future studies are warranted to include comprehensive economic analyses, detailed cost-benefit
evaluations, and comparisons of the cost-effectiveness of krill products against other novel and traditional

Linking root length and surface area to yield: variety-specific root plasticity in winter wheat across contrasting European environments
Understanding the relationship of root traits and crop performance under varying environmental conditions facilitates the exploitation of root characteristics in breeding and variety testing to maintain crop yields under climate change. Replacing soybean meal with distillers dried grains solubles on growth performance and feed utilization in catfish Clarias magur fingerlings
The present study explored the feasibility of the use of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to replace soybean meal (SBM) in the diet of magur, Clarias magur fingerlings. The experimental feeds were formulated by gradient replacement levels of SBM (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%) via DDGS. Magur fingerlings (12.75 ± 0.4 g) were randomly stocked in triplicates in fiberglass tanks (10 fish/tank) and fed with their respective diets twice daily at the rate of 3% body weight per day. At the end of the 60-day feeding trial, the growth and feed utilization parameters were not significantly affected by up to 50% replacement level. However, higher replacement levels, such as 75% and 100%, significantly reduced the growth and feed utilization. Antioxidant properties, digestive enzyme activities, and serum and blood biochemistry, responded differently to the different treatments but mostly without any adverse effects at up to 50% replacement, indicating the potential of DDGS as a safe alternative protein source in the magur diet. To conclude, DDGS could be a viable alternative ingredient for the partial replacement of SBM for up to 50% in the magur diet, which could improve the sustainability and profitability of magur aquaculture. Selección de variedades de arroz para cultivo ecológico: un enfoque agronómico
La producción y consumo de productos ecológicos ha crecido a nivel global y se espera que
siga aumentando. La Comisión Europea aspira a que, para 2030, el 25% de las tierras agrícolas sean ecológicas, mediante inversión e innovación en la agricultura sostenible.
El sistema de producción de arroz ecológico es complejo, por lo que su producción en las
cuencas mediterráneas es aún escasa, destacando principalmente Italia. En España, en
2023, solo 787 ha se dedicaron a este cultivo, representando una pequeña fracción de las
100.000 ha totales. Una de las principales barreras para su adopción a gran escala es la
considerable brecha de rendimiento frente a los sistemas convencionales, atribuida principalmente a la intensa competencia de las malas hierbas. Además, deben considerarse
otros factores limitantes como la eficiencia en la fertilización y la susceptibilidad a enfermedades. La optimización del cultivo ecológico requiere superar estos retos mediante
la selección de variedades adecuadas y la implementación de prácticas agronómicas eficientes. En 2021 y 2022, el IRTA Amposta realizó ensayos de campo para identificar las
variedades de arroz más compatibles con la producción ecológica, evaluando su respuesta

A palindromic sequence on chromosome 4 of peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) is flanking a large deletion related to a Slow Ripening Phenotype
Maturity date (MD) represents one of the main goals of the peach breeding programs worldwide with the aim to extend the harvest calendar. A major QTL linked to the trait was previously identified in peach and other stone fruits on LG4, and NAC genes were identified as the best candidates for the MD control. Here, a bud mutation affecting MD was found in a tree of the nectarine ‘Caldesi 2000′. The original variety (CW), its mutated sport (CM) and a segregating progeny obtained by selfing of CM was used to characterize the trait at phenotypic and molecular level. A panel of markers spanning the MD region was developed and a few recombinant plants were identified. A Non-ripening phenotype was observed in seedlings homozygous for one of the haplotypes, an effect probably caused by a large deletion of about 26 kb inactivating two transcription factors belonging to the NAC family (PpNAC072 and PpNAC1), similar, but independent, to a previously reported mutation associated to a slow ripening trait. The presence of palindromic sequences in the regions flanking the deletion may explain the occurrence of this phenomenon. The putative silencing of two members of the NAC family further supports the importance of these transcription factors in determining the MD phenotype. Further research is needed to elucidate functions and interactions between PpNAC072 and PpNAC1 in controlling the MD trait in peach and to determine the hierarchical expression of genes controlling fruit ripening.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Leishmania tarentolae and Leishmania infantum in geckos from Mallorca Island, Spain
Leishmania tarentolae and Leishmania infantum are two sympatric parasites of significant ecological and epidemiological interest in the Mediterranean basin. This study investigated the PCR prevalence of L. tarentolae and L. infantum in two gecko species (Tarentola mauritanica and Hemidactylus turcicus) present on Mallorca Island, Spain, using duplex quantitative PCR. A total of 59 geckos were sampled across the island, including 53 T. mauritanica and six H. turcicus. Tissue and blood samples were screened by PCR for both parasites. The results revealed the prevalence of Leishmania infection in adult T. mauritanica, with 10/49 (20.41 %) testing PCR positive for L. tarentolae only and with 1/49 (2.04 %) for L. infantum only. Coinfection with both parasites was detected in 3/49 geckos (6.12 %). No positives were identified in H. turcicus, probably due to small sample size. Regarding PCR positivity by tissues, coleomic organs were more likely to be positive for L. tarentolae in adult T. mauritanica than blood, with a slighter PCR positivity in the liver, spleen and lung.
