Spectral Properties of Complex Distributed Intelligence Systems Coupled with an Environment

    No full text
The increasing integration of artificial intelligence agents (AIAs) based on large language models (LLMs) is transforming many spheres of society. These agents act as human assistants, forming Distributed Intelligent Systems (DISs) and engaging in opinion formation, consensus-building, and collective decision-making. However, complex DIS network topologies introduce significant uncertainty into these processes. We propose a quantum-inspired graph signal processing framework to model collective behavior in a DIS interacting with an external environment represented by an influence matrix (IM). System topology is captured using scale-free and Watts-Strogatz graphs. Two contrasting interaction regimes are considered. In the first case, the internal structure fully aligns with the external influence, as expressed by the commutativity between the adjacency matrix and the IM. Here, a renormalization-group-based scaling approach reveals minimal reservoir influence, characterized by full phase synchronization and coherent dynamics. In the second case, the IM includes heterogeneous negative (antagonistic) couplings that do not commute with the network, producing partial or complete spectral disorder. This disrupts phase coherence and may fragment opinions, except for the dominant collective (Perron) mode, which remains robust. Spectral entropy quantifies disorder and external influence. The proposed framework offers insights into designing LLM-participated DISs that can maintain coherence under environmental perturbations

Teaching GIS to Humanists : A Survey of Online Educational Resources

    No full text
Outside certain domains within the humanities (e.g. archaeology, spatial history) the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) remains relatively uncommon. There are several reasons for this. The complexity of GIS systems themselves entails a steep learning-curve along with requiring familiarity with sophisticated technical systems and data formats, setting a high threshold for scholars and students in non-technical fields. Moreover, despite notable exceptions, much humanistic inquiry is not inherently predisposed to engage with spatiality in the literal manner demanded by GIS, lacking a justification to engage with a technology requiring such a large upfront investment. Some, such as Moretti and Hayles, have gone so far as to describe mapping and GIS as fundamentally at odds within humanistic epistemology, despite its enormous potential. Faced with these concerns and tasked with developing an open educational resource (OER) introducing GIS to humanists, the authors undertook an exploration of comparable OERs. The current paper reports how GIS is introduced to humanities-based scholars and enthusiasts through various learning resources platforms: The Programming Historian (17 OERs), Dariah Campus (5), Esri’s GIS for Humanities (6), and DariahTeach (2). The purpose of the survey is to understand how the technology and methods of GIS are presented to primarily humanistically-based learners. The OERs are subjected to a content analysis along three distinct dimensions: Audience: What do the OERs assume about their audiences (motivations, backgrounds, desired outcomes, skillsets)?Method: How are GIS framed (utility, use-cases, affordances, accessibility)?Instruction: What conceptual and technical elements are covered (procedures, functionalities, workflows, resources)?By analysing these aspects of the OERs sampled and using our own OER in development to highlight the insights gleaned, the paper hopes to present a clearer understanding of OER development and instruction more generally within the humanities with respect to more complex and esoteric digital methods

What Remains, Sustains : Designing circular models where waste and collaboration build resilient futures for Small-scale Product Businesses

    No full text
Small-scale Product Businesses (SPBs) in Scandinavia face a paradox: while they embody the creativity and craftsmanship that define Nordic design culture, they often lack the infrastructure, resources, and visibility needed to compete within increasingly industrialized sustainability systems. This thesis investigates the challenges and opportunities faced by such small actors in transitioning toward localized circular economies, exploring how design can drive resilience and value creation within regional ecosystems. Drawing upon Cradle to Cradle and Stakeholder Theory, the study integrates multiple methodologies to uncover how collaboration, innovation, and cross-sector partnerships can transform waste into value and slow down resource loops. The study adopted a Research-through-Design (RtD) methodology, integrating five semi-structured interviews with Scandinavian SPBs and industry experts and observational studies at regional design events. Prototyping and experimentation of products for the Circular Business Model Innovation were conducted at the X-Lab maker-space in Lund. This paved the way to the development and testing of a design-driven circular model through the creation of a real-life studio, which functioned as a living thesis lab. Within this, circular strategies such as Waste-to-Worth, Co-Creation Hubs, Brandpooling, and Cross-Border Collaboration were applied and tested through hands-on product development using industrial and post-consumer waste. The findings reveal that SPBs can build resilience by linking waste innovation with collaborative and communicative strategies that bridge design, business, and engineering. Ultimately, the thesis proposes a circular model as a pathway for SPBs to transform local waste streams into design opportunities - a model that can be replicated anywhere waste exists, serving as a blueprint for globally scalable circular innovation

From temperate to polar waters : Transition to non-cyanobacterial diazotrophy upon entering the Atlantic gateway of the Arctic Ocean

Nitrogen fixation, the microbial reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia, is increasingly recognized to occur in the Arctic Ocean. However, knowledge about the composition, biogeography, abundance, and ecology of nitrogen-fixing organisms (diazotrophs) is poor. This ultimately hinders the prediction of ecosystem productivity fueled by nitrogen fixation in this rapidly changing and predominantly nitrogen-limited ocean. We assessed the composition and abundance of total and nifH-expressing diazotrophs in subsurface water (8 m; amplicon sequencing and quantification of the marker gene nifH) over similar to 3400 km from the mouth of the brackish Baltic Sea to the sea ice edge in the Arctic Ocean. Upon entering nutrient-rich waters in the Atlantic gateway to the Arctic, we discovered an abrupt transition from autotrophic to heterotrophic diazotrophy (nifH expression). Our findings therefore suggest that diazotrophy is functionally distinct in the Arctic Ocean compared to adjacent temperate-boreal waters-a difference likely driven by inorganic nutrients, salinity, and temperature. We identify three key non-cyanobacterial diazotroph groups in the Arctic Ocean with Arctic-specific (Rhodocyclales and Oceanospirillales) or more widespread (unknown Gammaproteobacterium) distribution patterns and report their nifH gene transcription levels (up to 103 nifH transcripts L-1). In contrast, nifH expression in the warmer and more nutrient-poor Norwegian Sea with coastal-influenced water was dominated by sublineages of Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa (UCYN-A1, UCYN-A2, UCYN-A4; up to 104 nifH transcripts L-1). With ongoing atlantification of the Arctic pushing oceanic provinces and biogeographical ranges poleward, we predict a future displacement of the transition from autotrophic to heterotrophic diazotrophy with likely significant changes in nitrogen fixation

Microbial nitrogen fixation (diazotrophy) is a critical ecological process. We curated DiazoTIME (Diazotroph Taxonomic Identity and MEtabolism), a comprehensive database of diazotroph genomes including taxonomic annotation and metabolic prediction. DiazoTIME is unique among databases for classifying diazotrophs because it resolves both taxonomy and metabolic functionality

Nitrogen fixation under declining Arctic sea ice

    No full text
With climate change-induced sea ice decline in the Arctic Ocean, nitrogen is expected to become an increasingly important determinant of primary productivity. Nitrogen fixation is the conversion of molecular nitrogen to bioavailable ammonium by microorganisms called diazotrophs. Here, we report nitrogen fixation rates, diazotroph composition, and expression under different stages of declining sea ice in the Central Arctic Ocean (multiyear ice, five stations) and the Eurasian Arctic (marginal ice zone, seven stations). Nitrogen fixation in the Central Arctic Ocean was positively correlated with primary production, ranging from 0.4 +/- 0.1 to 2.5 +/- 0.87 nmol N L-1 d-1. Along two transects across the marginal ice zone, nitrogen fixation varied between days and ice regime from below detection up to 5.3 +/- 3.65 nmol N L-1 d-1 associated with an ice-edge phytoplankton bloom. We show nitrogen fixation in sea ice-covered waters of the Arctic Ocean and provide insight into present and active non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the region

Denna del analyseras utifrån modellen The Simple View of Reading. The Simple View of Reading.
