The Battle of the Flag : The importance of the Swedish merchant fleet for total defense and crisis preparedness

    No full text
The purpose of this study has been to examine the importance of the Swedish merchant fleet for Sweden’s total defence and crisis preparedness, and to analyze the consequences of reflagging Swedish vessels. It also explores how the role of the merchant fleet has evolved over time, particularly in light of Sweden’s NATO membership. The study is based on interviews with representatives from shipping companies, the Swedish Armed Forces, and relevant authorities, providing a comprehensive view of the subject. The results show that the merchant fleet is vital to Sweden’s supply capacity in times of crisis or war, especially for transporting military equipment and other essential resources. The shortage of Swedish-flagged vessels is seen as a security risk, as it limits Sweden’s ability to access ships during heightened readiness. Several respondents call for political incentives to increase the number of Swedish-flagged vessels and thereby strengthen total defence. Furthermore, the study highlights that while the Swedish merchant fleet continues to play a key role in total defence, the current lack of Swedish-flagged ships and qualified seafarers poses a threat to national preparedness. To address this, investments in maritime education and recruitment are recommended. NATO membership is viewed as both a reinforcement of Sweden’s total defence and a driver for enhancing national readiness. In summary, the study finds that the Swedish merchant fleet is a central component of Sweden’s total defence, and its future strength depends on political decisions, industry commitment, and the ability to attract and retain vessels under the Swedish flag

Respondenterna påpekar dessutom att den ökadeutbildningen inte ska leda till en ökad arbetsbelastningThe purpose of this study is to investigate how officers on Swedish-ownedvessels perceive their education and knowledge in cybersecurity. The studywas conducted using a qualitative method in the form of semi-structuredinterviews with ten participants. Through these interviews, their personalexperiences and opinions have been analyzed to gain an understanding ofhow they assess their cybersecurity skills and training. The results indicate that the officers perceive knowledge gaps in theircybersecurity training, which contributes to their concerns aboutcyberattacks. They also express an interest in receiving additional trainingand suggest various measures to enhance such cybersecurity knowledgeonboard, such as practical exercises, workshops, and maritime-relatedcourses. Furthermore, the respondents emphasize that while they want morecybersecurity training, it should not increase their workload

This study investigates how improved information exchange before the start of internships can facilitate mentors’ preparations for the ship-based training program (FFU) within naval officer programs at Swedish maritime schools. Using a qualitative method, including a literature analysis of prior research on mentorship and work-based education and semi-structured interviews with six mentors, their needs and experiences are mapped. Mentors’ express frustration over the information they receive, which is often limited to the student’s name and possibly year of study. They consider this information insufficient. The details they seek include students’ prior ship experiences, academic level, and personal goals for the internship, enabling mentors to tailor the internship and optimize learning. The findings propose a structured model for information exchange, such as through forms, which is timesaving for mentors, complemented by university templates detailing academic expectations for each year. The study contributes practical solutions to strengthen collaboration between mentors and students, optimize FFU, and ensure the maritime sector’s skills supply by addressing a research gap with concrete proposals.

    No full text
The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has transformed the advertising landscape, enabling practitioners to generate visual content for advertisements faster than ever. This study explores Generation Z consumers’ attitudes toward AI-generated visual content in advertising and examines how such content affects their attitudes and perceptions of advertisement credibility. Drawing on theories such as the ABC model of attitudes, Source Credibility Theory, and the Elaboration Likelihood Model, 17 semi-structured interviews were conducted with Gen Z participants. Thematic analysis was used to discover a wide range of attitudes towards a selection of real life advertisements that incorporated AI-generated visual content. Key findings include perceptions of resistance, laziness and generally negative attitudes when the perceived effort of the advertisement is low. Conversely, when perceived effort was high due to additional contextual factors, the use of AI-generated visual content was more accepted. The study found multiple key factors that add to the understanding of attitudes and credibility in the context of AI-generated visual content, an area that thus far has remained relatively unexplored. The study highlights the importance of aligning AI-generated advertising content with Gen Z values of authenticity and transparency. Findings contribute to the emerging literature on attitudes and credibility towards AI in advertising and offer practical insights for advertisers, as well as highlighting broader implications.

Missing Out on Sustainability? Leveraging FOMO Appeals to Foster Pro-Environmental Behavior in Fast Fashion

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of FOMO-driven (Fear of Missing Out) marketing strategies on sustainable consumer behavior within the fast fashion industry, and whether these strategies stimulate broader pro-environmental actions through spillover effects. The findings demonstrate that FOMO-based appeals can effectively drive consumers towards sustainable fashion purchases when employed authentically and positively, highlighting meaningful, community-based experiences rather than exploiting impulsive urgency. However, improperly framed FOMO tactics may trigger skepticism, diminishing their effectiveness. Moreover, results confirm a positive spillover effect, where initial sustainable actions prompted by FOMO can encourage consumers to adopt further sustainable behaviors, especially when supported by intrinsic motivation and reinforced personal sustainability values. This research offers significant managerial and policy insights, advocating for transparent and authentic marketing approaches, peer-driven social influences, and regulatory support to foster long-lasting sustainable consumer engagement

Bearing the Burden : Understanding the Multifaceted Impact of Energy Poverty on Women

    No full text
Energy poverty has evolved into a topic of global concern affecting both developing and developed countries. Energy poverty deprives the potential of numerous women to participate in family, communal, and economic activities. While energy poverty is a commonly studied subject, the existing literature often overlooks its gender dimension, specifically the effects on women. This systematic review aims to fill the current research lacuna by shedding light on the multifaceted consequences faced by women due to energy poverty. To this end, numerous articles from Scopus and Web of Science are fully analysed. The findings demonstrate the impacts on multiple aspects of women’s lives, such as health, emotional well-being, income, increased workload, and the perpetuation of inequality. Though the challenges seem a bit different in the Global South and North from a boarder perspective, coherent policies that enhance women’s empowerment with economic opportunities could minimize the potential risk of energy poverty. The review underlines the urgency of integrating a gender perspective, emphasising the necessity of interdisciplinary methods that connect energy and gender studies differently in both the Global North and South. The finding also highlights the role of socio-economic conditions, cultural norms, and the division of labour in increasing women’s vulnerability. This review highlights the crucial significance of gender-inclusive approaches in understanding and tackling energy poverty.Doctoral Sustainable energy engineering programme (SEED

The marine environment is currently a major issue within the merchant fleet. Today, there are many initiatives aimed at strengthening and protecting the marine environment. Despite this, there is still technology and regulations that allow the discharge of toxic substances into the sea. Even though it is currently permitted to release these toxic substances, there is technology available that either reduces or eliminates these emissions. Sweden will therefore soon introduce a regulatory framework that makes it more difficult to use harmful systems that negatively affect the marine environment. However, when the new regulations come into effect, there are still many aspects that need to be taken into consideration. The different perspectives highlighted in this work are therefore important and provide insight into how the merchant fleet, associated authorities, and companies view the new legislative proposal. This study has therefore analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of banning marine scrubber systems in Swedish territorial waters through a focus group study with participants from the maritime sector

    No full text
This paper studies the factors that influence high school students' choices for upper secondary school. The study is based on a questionnaire sent to four different schools in southern Sweden. In each school, two 9th grader classes were asked to answer the questionnaire. The questionnaire is designed based on previous research that concerns factors that exist in students' everyday lives. The study discusses how different categories can be used to categorize students differently based on the factors that influence them. The study also addresses how schools use different identities in the Swedish market and profile themselves in different ways to attract a certain type of student to their school. The study highlights how the different patterns between the different categories of students can be understood and what role different schools profiling affects students in their choice of upper secondary school. In order to provide a deeper background for the study, previous research has been used that explains factors from family background as well as previous research that provides an understanding of how the Swedish school system affects students in their choice of choosing a school completely freely. The study shows that students socioeconomic background and their parents' presence in their students' studies greatly affect the extent to which students have ambitions towards professions that require further education where upper secondary school can give the student a good foundation to stand on
