The role of Arabic-speaking media in the Swedish election campaign: : A qualitative interview study of Alkompis and Radio Sweden Arabic ahead of the 2026 parliamentary election
In Sweden, Arabic is the second most spoken mother tongue, making Arabic-language media an important source of political information for a significant segment of the electorate. Despite this, research on the role of Arabic-language media in Swedish election campaigns remains limited. This study examines how two of the most influential Arabic-language news outlets in Sweden Alkompis and Radio Sweden Arabic prepare for and conduct election coverage ahead of the 2026 Swedish parliamentary election. The study focuses on editorial priorities, journalistic considerations, and perceptions of democratic responsibility toward an Arabic-speaking audience. Using a qualitative research design, the study is based on six semi-structured interviews with journalists working at the two news organizations. The analysis is guided by framing theory, agenda-setting theory, and alternative media theory, which together provide a framework for understanding how political issues are selected, presented, and contextualized for minority-language audiences. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify recurring patterns related to editorial decision-making, audience adaptation, and democratic engagement. The findings show that both Alkompis and Radio Sweden Arabic define their mission as providing “Swedish journalism in Arabic,” with a strong emphasis on accessibility, clarity, and contextual explanation. Editorial priorities are shaped by both journalistic norms of balance and impartiality and by perceived audience needs, particularly regarding issues such as migration, citizenship, welfare, and political participation. Audience interaction especially through social media plays a significant role in influencing agenda-setting, illustrating a circular relationship between media production and audience expectations. While both outlets stress neutrality and equal representation of political actors, differences emerge due to organizational conditions. Alkompis, operating as an independent commercial outlet, emphasizes flexibility and audience-driven formats, whereas Radio Sweden Arabic, as part of public service broadcasting, faces stricter institutional constraints and resource limitations. Nevertheless, journalists at both organizations express a strong sense of democratic responsibility, viewing their work as essential for enabling informed political participation among Arabic-speaking voters. The study contributes to journalism and media research by addressing a gap in knowledge about minority-language election coverage in Sweden. It highlights the democratic significance of Arabic-language media as both information providers and facilitators of political inclusion, and suggests the need for further research on minority media’s role in increasingly fragmented and multilingual public spheres.
Competence Exchange as a Key to Success : A Study of Collegial Cooperation in Supporting Newly Arrived Students´Learning in Physical Education
When collaboration meets practice : A qualitive study of collaboration between region coordinators and the police in work against prostitution
This study aims to explore how collaboration between regional coordinators and the police is manifested in practice, as well as to identify opportunities and challenges in the authorities’ joint work with individuals exposed to prostitution. Individuals involved in prostitution are considered a particularly vulnerable group with complex needs. Previous research has demonstrated that inter-agency collaboration is crucial for effective practice, as well as the importance of taking the needs of those affected into account. The study adopts a qualitative research design based on eight individual interviews. The theoretical framework is grounded in the concepts of collaboration and power, alongside Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective. The findings indicate that inter-agency collaboration entails both opportunities and challenges. Differences in mandates and institutional focus emerge as a strength, as the authorities complement one another through their specialized expertise, which becomes particularly evident in joint interventions. The collaboration is shown to be person-dependent, a characteristic that can be viewed as both an advantage and a limitation. Power relations vary depending on the professionals’ established working relationships, as well as the authorities’ differing legal frameworks and areas of responsibility. Despite the challenges identified, the authorities are mutually dependent on one another, and the collaboration is assessed as well-functioning and of significant importance in providing support to individuals exposed to prostitution, while also demonstrating potential for further development
Men who fall through the cracks : Police and social services experiences of male victims of intimate partner violence in heterosexual relationships
The purpose of this study aims to understand how professionals in police and social services describe their work and encounters with male victims of intimate partner violence in heterosexual relationships, and to analyze these descriptions in relation to the concept of epistemic injustice. To investigate this, the study was based on a qualitative approach with eight interviews. The interviews were divided between four patrol police officers and four workers from an IPV department of Swedish social services. The findings indicate clear differences between the two professional groups. Police work is characterized by acute interventions caused by time constraints based on the nature of their work. The work included a strong focus on gathering evidence for an eventual arrest or sentencing. In contrast, the social services describe a supportive, long-term and individualized approach with male victims of IPV. Furthermore, the findings show how the professionals describe recurring patterns of meeting male victims of IPV, suggesting shared challenges across professional roles. These results were analyzed and discussed with Miranda Frickers theory of epistemic injustice, along with Michael Lipskys theory of street-level bureaucracy. In conclusion this study suggest that the limited societal knowledge of male victims of IPV highlights the need for further research to improve understanding and professional responses
Between Roots and "Yellow and Blue" : A Literature Didactic Analysis of Identity, Belonging and In-Betweenness in Jonas Hassen Khemiri's One Eye Red (Ett öga rött)
Politicized representations of reality : A study of how left-, liberal-, and right-leaning press frame Islam and Muslims in editorials between 2010–2020
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Muslims and Islam are portrayed on the editorial pages of Swedish traditional news media during the period 2010–2020. The study focuses in particular on the migration wave of 2014–2016 and analyzes how these portrayals change before, during, and after this period. Furthermore, it compares how Muslims and Islam are depicted in editorials from newspapers with different political orientations. The empirical material consists of 171 editorials from six Swedish newspapers: the non-aligned Social Democratic newspapers Aftonbladet and Dala-Demokraten, the non-aligned liberal newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen (including Göteborgs-Tidningen), and the non-aligned Moderate newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Barometern. The analysis is conducted using framing theory and the postcolonial concept of the Other. The analysis shows that the period 2010–2013 was characterized by defensive and protective frames of Muslims, in which discrimination was problematized while extremist minorities were also highlighted. During the migration wave of 2014–2016, the focus on extremism increased, alongside a continued protective frame. The years 2017–2020 were characterized by a continued focus on extremism, as well as an increased emphasis on integration and the relationship to the majority culture, together with a continued protective frame. The non-aligned Social Democratic newspapers displayed more inclusive and protective frames, while the non-aligned liberal newspapers combined security-oriented and protective or defensive frames. The non-aligned Moderate newspapers more frequently exhibited frames emphasizing integration and culture. Based on framing theory and the postcolonial concept of the Other, it becomes evident that different frames, over time and across newspapers with different political profiles, can influence readers’ interpretations and political communication. The complexity that emerges in the results also contributes to the existing research field
Images in Ritual Landscapes : Motifs, Ritual and Landscape in Rock Carvings in Grave Contexts in Southern Sweden
This bachelor’s thesis examines Bronze Age rock carvings in grave contexts in southern Sweden, focusing on motif selection, spatial organization, and the relationship between imagery, burial monuments, and landscape. The aim of the study is to investigate which types of motifs occur in rock carvings associated with graves, how these motifs vary between sites, and how their placement and orientation contribute to an understanding of Bronze Age funerary rituals. The study is based on a comparative analysis of eight sites where rock carvings occur in direct relation to graves. The material consists of documented rock carvings, analyzed with regard to motif categories, composition, orientation, and spatial relationships within the burial context. The methodological approach combines litterature review with contextual and comparative analysis of the rock carvings and their surrounding landscapes. The results demonstrate a clear dominance of ritually charged and repetitive motifs, such as cupmarks, ships, and footprints, while narratively complex figures occur more selectively. In a couple cases, motifs are oriented toward the grave itself, indicating that the carvings were intended to function within a closed ritual space rather than as outward-facing images. The study concludes that rock carvings in grave contexts formed an active component of funerary rituals, where image-making, bodily movement, and landscape were integrated into practices concerned with transition, death and cosmological order during the Bronze Age
Children's Perspectives on Writing : Opportunities and Requirements
Pseudoscience and Archaeology.
This article explores the relationship between archaeology and pseudoscientific theories by examining three examples: Ales stenar in Sweden, the Bosnian Pyramids in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Stonehenge in the United Kingdom. The study also analyzes a wide range of sources, such as academic articles, media reports, and popular literature, to evaluate the impact pseudoscientific claims have on archaeology and how they have been addressed in that regard. This contribution identifies three approaches toward pseudoscience: opposing, ignoring, or involving such opposition. Fighting pseudoscientific claims leads to divergence between conflicts and opposition to their dissemination. Those that ignore do little to diminish the weight of pseudoscientific claims. Dialogue is a more fruitful avenue for archaeologists to engage the public without alienating various stakeholders who hold an alternative theory. The research reveals that pseudoscientific theories can generate public interest in scientific archaeology. This is evident by the case of the Bosnian Pyramids, which have experienced increased tourism and enthusiasm from the public. Securing dialogue can allow archaeology to benefit from that interest while maintaining its scientific standing
From North Vietnam to Palestine : How Aftonbladet, Arbetartidningen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet portrayed Sweden's recognition of states in 1968–1969, 1972–1973 & 2013–2014
The purpose of this study is to explore how the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet, Arbetartidningen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet treated Sweden’s recognition of North Vietnam 1969, North Korea 1973 and Palestine 2014, in editorials during the year before and the year of each recognition. By analyzing and categorizing the content of each article in terms of political and legal considerations, as well as examining the newspapers’ ideological positioning, the study explores how the political debate surrounding the recognition issue has evolved throughout history. By using quantitative and comparative methods in conjunction with qualitative content analysis, the findings reveal that Aftonbladet was consistently supportive, framing the recognitions as moral and political duties. Dagens Nyheter was more cautious, weighing both legal and diplomatic implications, while Svenska Dagbladet remained critical, especially regarding the potential impact on Sweden’s neutrality and its relations with the Western world. Arbetartidningen strongly supported the recognitions as a way to show solidarity with socialist states. The study also reflects on the inclusion of the recognition issue in Swedish upper secondary school history education.
