    No full text
The aim of this study is to investigate how daily activity centers in Sweden work to promote physical health for people with intellectual disabilities. According to Swedish authorities, people with intellectual disabilities experience poorer physical health compared to the general population. The vulnerability of this group is further supported by previous research, which highlights their increased risk of physical conditions and an elevated risk of premature death. Some obstacles in the health-promoting work are mentioned in previous research, however, there is limited knowledge about how these obstacles can be addressed, as well as about the conflict between the individual´s self-determination and the staff´s health-promoting role. This study was carried out using a qualitative method through eight semi-structured interviews with managers and employees at daily activity centers in a municipality in southern Sweden. The empirical material was analyzed using a reflexive thematic analysis. The results indicated that the employees use different strategies to be able to motivate participants of daily activity centers to physical activities. Our results also found that daily activity centers face different opportunities in health-promotion work based on a variety of factors, such as the structures of the activity centers or the needs of the participants. A key conclusion we drew was that motivation and self-determination are important factors in increasing participants' willingness to engage in physical activity.

    Esports/Gaming & Migrant Youth Integration

    No full text
This study explores how participation in esports and online gaming communities influences the integration and sense of belonging of immigrant youth in Sweden. While integration research has traditionally focused on offline institutions such as schools, labour markets, and neighbourhoods, this study shifts attention to digital leisure spaces that play an increasingly central role in young people’s everyday social lives. Using a qualitative research design, the study is based on semi-structured interviews with eleven immigrant youth aged 18–26 who actively participate in online multiplayer gaming communities. The findings show that gaming functions as a meaningful social arena where immigrant youth build relationships, practise language, and experience belonging through shared goals and cooperation. Gaming communities often provide low-threshold access to social participation, particularly during early or difficult phases of integration when offline inclusion is limited. Belonging within these spaces is largely conditional, shaped by competence, contribution, and cooperation rather than ethnic or migration background. At the same time, participants report experiences of exclusion and discrimination, especially in open and anonymous gaming environments, highlighting the limits of inclusion in digital spaces. By applying Acculturation Theory, Social Identity Theory, and a sense of belonging framework, the study demonstrates that gaming communities can function both as bridges and barriers to integration. The study contributes to peace and development studies by highlighting the importance of everyday digital spaces in processes of social cohesion, identity negotiation, and inclusion, and argues for broader integration research that accounts for online social environments alongside offline contexts

Framing the idealistic Bohemian and the rational outsider : on Swedish sports media narratives of individualism and defiance

    No full text
Bohemians and outsiders have long fascinated the media and the general public because they challenge conventional lifestyles and societal norms. This fascination extends to sport, where narratives about such figures appear in both historical and contemporary media. By analysing the media's framing of cross-country skier Lars Theodor Jonsson (1903-1998) and speed skater Nils van der Poel (1996-), this essay identifies two distinct ideal types: the 'idealistic bohemian' of modern society and the 'rational outsider' of postmodern society. Through an examination of these athletes' careers, public personae, and lifestyle choices as represented in the media, the essay sheds light on how sporting hero narratives evolve in relation to broader social and cultural changes

Artificial Intelligence for Agricultural Extension : Supporting Transformative Learning Among Smallholder Farmers

    No full text
Small and marginal farmers face intersecting challenges related to food security, environmental risk and structural disadvantage. Agricultural extension has historically played a central role in supporting these farmers, with evolving approaches that increasingly emphasise participatory learning, farmer agency and ethical knowledge exchange. As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies begin to enter the agricultural advisory landscape, their potential to support smallholder learning remains both promising and contested. This article explores the intersection of AI and agricultural extension by proposing a typology of learning based on two key dimensions: the locus of knowledge production and the orientation of agricultural knowledge and innovation systems (AKIS). Using this framework, we assess the extent to which current AI applications in agriculture align with ethical and participatory extension goals. Our analysis is grounded in a detailed case study of Farmer. Chat, a generative AI-powered advisory tool developed by Digital Green and Microsoft Research, and deployed in four countries. Drawing on mixed-methods data, we examine how AI can support or limit different types of learning, trust-building and knowledge co-creation. We find that while Farmer.Chat enhances access and personalisation, it still leans towards individualised, one-way communication. Its full potential depends on embedding it within trusted social infrastructures, enabling feedback loops and aligning with double-loop learning and participatory extension ethics. We conclude with a research agenda to guide the development of AI tools that support more inclusive, adaptive and democratic agricultural knowledge systems

When Doktor Glas becomes easy but not simple : a comparative analysis of Söderberg’s original novel and its abridged version from the perspective of reader-response theory

Fabrication and functionalisation of poly(ε-caprolactone)-based materials for water treatment : A comprehensive review

    No full text
Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based materials have emerged as promising materials for water treatment due to their biodegradability, structural tunability, and compatibility with functional modifications. Beyond previous general PCL reviews, this work offers a focused assessment of PCL-based materials for water treatment, integrating fabrication routes, hierarchical structures, and treatment mechanisms into a coherent framework. A critical summary of recent progress in the design and application of PCL-based composites across four major treatment mechanisms (adsorption, membrane separation, photocatalytic degradation, and biodegradation) was provided, with an emphasis on underlying structure–property–performance relationships. The effects of fabrication strategies, including electrospinning, phase separation, freeze-drying, and 3D printing, on membrane morphology, surface functionality, and pollutant removal performance are systematically analysed. Strategies for performance enhancement are discussed in terms of polymer blending, nanofiller incorporation, and hierarchical structural design, highlighting how these approaches tune wettability, porosity, and interfacial interactions to enhance adsorption and separation efficiency. This review also examines multifunctional hybrid systems that couple photocatalysis with filtration or adsorption, along with the emerging use of PCL as a biodegradable carbon source and microbial carrier for denitrification. In addition, the review provides a comparative perspective that synthesises recent fabrication strategies and treatment pathways, clarifying their respective structural advantages and practical limitations. Despite notable advances, challenges remain in achieving long-term mechanical stability, recyclability, scalable fabrication, and consistent performance under real wastewater conditions. The review concludes with an outlook on integrating green fabrication, quantitative structure–performance correlations, and digital optimisation tools to accelerate the translation of PCL-based materials into practical, sustainable water treatment technologies

    No full text
In preschool education, rules constitute a fundamental part of children’s everyday life which affect children’s play, children although have according to the preschools curriculum right to influence. There is a lack of knowledge on how rules for play can affect children’s influence and how they are implemented in preschool education. The purpose of this study is to investigate how preschool teachers account for the function of play in preschool and how they enable as well as hinder children in relation to their influence. This study is a qualitative study that uses semi-structured interviews. Six preschool teachers in four preschools have been interviewed to gather material for the study. The theoretical foundation is sociology of childhood where the terms interpretive reproduction and peer culture are highlighted. The theoretical foundation also consists of the terms children’s perspective, child perspective, enable and hinder. The result shows that there are many different rules in preschools. Rules are something that could both hinder and enable children’s influence in play which the result highlight, but however how children get influence can differ. The results indicate that rules for play that exists in preschool are believed to be because of preschool teachers view of children. Social rules and rules that prevent children from hurting themselves are essential according to the results. The results shows that it is important for educators to agree about rules that exists in preschool. In the discussion a rule is brought up that every child should be included in the play, but at the same time it is not always possible which enables one child as well as limits another child. In the discussion it is also brought up that depending on the educator’s knowledge and awareness of the subject, the amount of influence that children get is affected

    The vulnerable criminals?

    No full text
This thesis attempts to showcase how property crimes evolved in Oskarshamn city and the Stranda district during the Second World War. The study attempts to showcase who did the crimes, what they did, and what punishment they received. This study also tries to showcase to what extent the criminal was in a vulnerable position or not. The source material used in this study to showcase the evolution of property crimes is official documents from both Oskarshamn city hall court and Stranda district court. In the documents, information about the convicted and their crimes was found. Name, profession, and what they did are things that are found there. To explain why people commit property crimes, there is a theory about exposure. The result is gathered in tables to give an overview of how property crimes changed during the Second World War. The results of this study showcase that the number of property crimes increased from the Second War. From there, the crimes were on an equal level during the rest of the war. It is mostly men from the working class who commit crimes. There are few cases where women have committed a crime. This study also showed that most of the people who got convicted were not in a vulnerable position. More crimes were charged in Oskarshamn city hall court than in Stranda district court

The pursuit of flow : A study of how stress and wellbeing affect flow

    No full text
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between flow proneness, perceived stress and subjective well-being in work, leisure and household activities as well as to identify which factor best predicts flow proneness. Data were collected using self-report quest-ionnaires (SFPQ, PSS-14 and WHO-5) from a convenience sample of adult participants. Re-sults showed that flow proneness was generally high, with small differences across activity domains. Flow proneness was significantly negatively associated with stress and positively associated with well-being, especially in work-related situations. Multiple regression analyses indicated that well-being was the strongest predictor of flow proneness, while stress had a slightly weaker negative effect. The results shows that structure, goals and challenging tasks facilitate flow which can enhance well-being and reduce stress. The study emphasizes the im-portance of creating environments that support well-being and stress management to optimize flow
