    Get PDF
A leaf micromorphology and palynological study was conducted on the selected Acanthaceae species namely Justicia betonica L, Justicia carnea Lindl., Justicia procumbens (L.) Lam., Ruellia repens L., Ruellia simplex C. Wright and Ruellia tuberosa L. Taxonomists often faced difficulties in identifying and classifying species within the Acanthaceae family, especially when plant specimens obtained from the field samplings are incomplete such as the absence of flowers and fruits. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify and list the characters of leaf micromorphology and palynology that are useful in identification of species in Acanthaceae. The procedures involved such as dehydration, critical point drying, gold coated and examination under scanning electron microscope Zeiss Supra 55VP and were analyses using SmartSEM software. Results revealed the common and variations characteristics of leaf micromorphology that can be useful in identification of species and genera studied such as type of epicuticular waxes, cuticular ornamentations, stomata characteristics and the presence of trichomes. Findings in this study also have shown some variations in the pollen morphology that can be used in species identification and classification. In conclusion, the results have demonstrated that leaf micromorphology and pollen morphology characteristics have taxonomic significance and can be used as an additional data especially in identification and classification of species as well as genera of Acanthaceae

If a Wikipedia entry on a contemporary issue can contain distorted information to such an extent, what about events that took place decades and centuries ago? If a platform like Wikipedia — presumed to be mainstream and impartial — can create such systematic information distortion against Palestinians, what about outlets that are widely perceived as pro-Israeli

Comparison on structural, morphological and electrical analysis on Mn and Zn-doped KNN thin film by sol-gel method

The lead-free sodium potassium niobate (KNN) exhibits improved electrical and structural properties. This substance is well-known because it resembles lead zirconate titanate (PZT). KNN may replace the commonly used PZT, although it has significant drawbacks. This study introduced metal oxide doping. The perovskite structure of KNN contained manganese oxide (MnO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) dopants. The improved electrical characteristics of KNN thin films doped with MnO and ZnO were investigated by studying the effects of manganese and zinc dopants on the surface morphology and resistivity. The chemical solution deposition was used as methodology. Their structural, morphology and electrical properties of the doped KNN thin film were analysed using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and LCR meter. The peak of all KNN thin films was in the (001), indicating a preferred for growth orientation. Mn-doped KNN films had improved crystallinity and suppressed secondary phases, while ZnO doping preserved the crystal structure with only minor disturbances. The microstructure of Mn-doped KNN thin films was homogeneous and dense with reduced grain boundaries, while Zn-doped KNN thin films had a denser morphology and bigger grain sizes, especially at higher doping levels. The electrical measurements showed that Mn doping increases resistivity, making films better for high-performance piezoelectric applications. Conversely, the incorporation of zinc resulted in a reduction in the electrical resistance of the material as its concentration increased. The work shows that Mn and Zn doping affects KNN thin film structural, morphological, and electrical properties differently. The results showed that MnO-doped KNN performed best at a concentration of 0.3 mol and ZnO-KNN at 0.9 mol. These results aid the development of improved KNN-based materials for electrical and piezoelectric application

Amlodipine-induced generalised exfoliative dermatitis: not to be missed!

    Get PDF
Amlodipine a calcium channel blocker (CCB), is commonly used in treating hypertension, coronary artery disease, and chronic kidney disease. It is considered a first-line treatment for high blood pressure. Amlodipine acts by selectively inhibiting voltage-gated L-type calcium ion channels, which consequently decreases systemic vascular resistance, total vascular resistance, and muscle contractility. We report a case of amlodipine-induced exfoliative dermatitis, highlighting the importance of recognizing this rare but serious cutaneous reaction to amlodipine, a commonly used drug in primary care. Prompt discontinuation of the offending drug and appropriate management are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for drug-induced exfoliative dermatitis in patients presenting with generalized erythema and scaling after initiating new medication

Mental health and wellness among Muslim students: integrating Islamic practices and modern medicine

    No full text
Physical and mental health are critical aspects of life across societies, and Islamic teachings emphasis their importance as integral to the development of good character and the promotion of peace and comfort. In the context of college students, mental health issues are becoming increasingly prevalent due to academic pressures, social dynamics, and cultural transitions. This paper explores the potential of combining Islamic practices such as prayer (Salat), fasting (Sawm), charity (Zakat), and mindfulness (Dhikr) with evidence-based medical interventions to enhance the mental and physical health outcomes of Muslim students. Using quantitative methods to explore personal experiences and perceptions, with a sample of 70 respondents including students and lecturers. Key questions address how the integration of Islamic practices with medical interventions affects mental and physical health and the role of cultural and religious factors in shaping health behaviors and perceptions. The study hypotheses that integrating these Islamic practices with modern medical approaches can create a robust framework for improving student health and wellness. Preliminary findings reveal that students who incorporate Islamic practices into their daily routines alongside medical treatments show notable improvements in resilience, lower stress levels, and enhanced overall well-being. This suggests that the synergy between Islamic teachings and modern health practices can significantly contribute to better health outcomes. The implications of this study are significant for educational institutions, in which by adopting culturally sensitive strategies that integrate spiritual practices with medical care, institutions will be able to support student development more effectively and foster environments that contribute to the broader goal of JERISAH (Joint Educational Research for Improved Student Achievement and Health). This integrative model not only benefits Muslim students but also offers a framework for developing holistic health initiatives applicable in diverse educational contexts globally

Abstract Hamka was a prominent cleric-literary figure in the Malay realm. His work, both scholarly and literary, often become reading material and has an impact on the readers. Among the novels published by Hamka are Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijk, Merantau ke Deli, Di Bawah Lindungan Kaabah and Tuan Direktur. These novels not only highlight Hamka's ability in literary writing but also contain some of his thoughts and philosophies, especially those related to the social environment during the publication era of the novel. This has indirectly shaped Hamka's authorship in literary writing. Hence, this article aims to explore his authorship philosophy by analyzing and criticizing his novel, namely Tuan Direktur. The research design of this study is an intertextual study, which uses qualitative approach in collecting and analyzing data. The study shows that the novel Tuan Direktur exposed lucidly the authorship of Hamka as a literary writer. Even though the work is thin in terms of the size, it is loaded with Hamka's philosophy about humanity. The issue of human relations, independence and hubb al-watan, Islamic call or da’wah and education are the core issues of Tuan Direktur, driven by the characteristic of Hamka as an Islamic scholar and an independence fighter in Indonesia. In fact, the authorship philosophy of Hamka in the novel is still relevant in today's context, since the issue of humanity as a broad and infinity issue without boundaries of time, status and territory
