Optimizing digital reference services utilization: a comparative study of two university libraries in Nigeria and Malaysia
The rapid evolution of information and communication technology (ICT) has revolutionized the delivery of library services, establishing digital reference services (DRS) as an essential component of academic libraries. This study conducts a comparative analysis of DRS utilization in two university libraries: the Kashim Ibrahim Library (KIL) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Nigeria, and the Dar al-Hikmah Library (DHL) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The research evaluates technological frameworks, user engagement strategies, and operational practices to identify factors that influence the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of DRS in these institutions. The analysis reveals that Dar al-Hikmah Library (DHL) accounts for 41.7% of the total digital services provided in this comparative study, demonstrating its robust adoption of advanced features such as live chat, social media integration, and institutional repository access. In contrast, Kashim Ibrahim Library (KIL) contributes 33.3%, offering essential foundational services like an online catalog and database access but lacking more interactive features. A 25% service gap highlights the absence of advanced tools, such as real-time support and chatbots integration, at KIL. The study identifies challenges such as limited infrastructure, insufficient user training, and gaps in awareness. It also emphasizes opportunities for improvement, including adopting innovative technologies, expanding digital tools, and fostering collaboration between libraries. Actionable recommendations are provided to bridge service gaps and enhance user satisfaction, ensuring that DRS platforms effectively meet the diverse academic needs of user communities in Nigeria and Malaysia
Examining mortality risk prediction using machine learning in heart failure patients
Heart failure is fatal. Signs and symptoms of heart failure often overlap with those of other medical conditions. These symptoms could kill the patient. Predicting heart failure mortality helps healthcare workers spend resources to reduce or prevent deaths. Demographics, laboratory tests, and vital signs were used to create and test prediction models. This study compares random forests, and support vector machine to determine the best mortality risk prediction approach. This study analyses heart failure symptoms to identify risk factors for mortality. The study also examines how these findings apply to all heart failure patients. The study collects a subset of MIMIC-III heart failure patients to achieve this goal. Previous research studies used a smaller dataset, which is compared to this one. The experimental examination of blood creatinine, ejection fraction, and binned age shows that machine learning is be able to classify heart failure patients by mortality risk. This information helps clinicians improve treatment, improving patient outcomes and resource allocation. The study shows that machine learning can improve heart failure mortality risk prediction by using large clinical datasets like MIMIC-III. This study advances predictive analytics in healthcare, giving valuable information for clinicians and academics seeking to better heart failure patient care
Toward an understanding of the robot rights spectrum: an integrative framework from an Islamic economics perspective
Purpose – This paper aims to explore the role and relationship of ethics and morals in technology, specifically
examining how Islam, as a religion that emphasizes spirituality and sacredness, can uniquely influence the
concept of robot rights.
Design/methodology/approach – The existing literature on robot rights and Islamic perspectives has been
critically reviewed to address the study’s objectives.
Findings – In Islam, robots are viewed similarly to property ownership, where the owner holds
responsibilities rather than absolute control. Islamic ownership rights are distinct compared to conventional
ownership models. In Islam, private ownership is limited, as God is considered the ultimate owner of all assets.
Assets, including robots, must be managed according to Islamic values and ethics. Unlike conventional
ownership, where the owner can dispose of their property without justification, Islamic principles grant more
rights to assets (including robots). This difference arises from the sacred origins of economic resources in
Islam, which extends to the treatment of assets as inputs in an economy. Therefore, spirituality, as defined in
Islam, uniquely influences the rights of robots.
Originality/value – As robotics becomes an increasingly significant part of our lives, religion plays a
growing role in shaping the ethical and moral framework within which robots operate. This study is among the
first to present an integrative framework and evaluate robot rights from an Islamic economics perspectiv
Analyzing the multidimensional non-traditional security challenges in North Africa and regional implication
The non-traditional security challenges in North Africa have experienced significant changes in recent years. In addition to conventional military issues, the region has experienced many problems, such as drug trafficking, illegal immigration movements, smuggling, the Arab Spring, and the consequences of the global 'War on Terror' launched after the events of 9/11. Most research on North African security concentrates on threats within the traditional paradigms of military matters and terrorism. Nevertheless, this paper considers the overall parameters of an expanded North African regional non-traditional security. It focuses on four specific issues: illegal immigration movement, water scarcity, drug trafficking, and smuggling. Evaluation of stiffness derivatives of a wedge at supersonic speeds using design of experiment methodology
The current research focuses on numerically simulating the stiffness derivative across the wedge for various supersonic Mach numbers and wedge angles at different pivot points. The knowledge of the stiffness derivatives is of prime importance from the stability point of view. The stiffness derivative is a measure of the stability of aerospace vehicles. The regression model analysis method is applied for the numerical simulation of the stiffness derivative. The analytical results are derived by applying Ghosh's two-dimensional piston theory. The factors Mach number, wedge angle, and pivot position are considered for the current investigation. For the current study, the Mach number (M) ranges from 2.2 to 4.0, and the wedge angle (θ) ranges from 2° to 20°. The stiffness derivative findings are obtained for different Mach numbers (M) and angles of incidence (θ) at pivot various positions (h) spanning the range of 0.0 to 1.0. The present study's conclusions on stiffness derivatives are contrasted with the analytical findings. Excellent consistency is revealed by the current study's results and analytical outcomes. This study shows that the factors pivot position (h), wedge angle (θ), and Mach number (M) have significant effects on the variance of the stiffness derivative. The stiffness derivative rises continuously with the angle of incidence (θ) and reduces continuously as the Mach number (M) increases at each pivot location (h). The present theory is applicable when the shock waves are attached to the nose of the wedge
