    Agenda pemerkasaan mahkamah syariah mungkin agak senyap diperkatakan kebelakangan ini, namun perbincangan mengenainya dalam pelbagai wacana, sama ada pada peringkat Persekutuan atau negeri tidak pernah padam. Bahkan rakyat terbanyak juga tidak berhenti berkongsi pandangan dan persepsi terhadap usaha memartabat mahkamah syariah. Dari sudut sejarah usaha ini, pindaan Perlembagaan pada 1988 ternyata memberikan sinar baharu kepada kedudukan mahkamah syariah dari segi bidang kuasanya. Menerusi pindaan itu, Fasal (1A) dimasukkan untuk menafikan bidang kuasa Mahkamah Persekutuan dalam perkara di bawah bidang kuasa mahkamah syariah. Dalam pindaan sama, Perkara 5(4) dipinda dengan menyatakan seseorang ditangkap mengikut undang-undang syariah hendaklah di bawah ke hadapan hakim syariah dalam tempoh 24 jam. Pindaan ini mengangkat kedudukan mahkamah syariah. Namun, pindaan ini nampaknya tidak mampu menamatkan atau menyelesaikan lingkaran cabaran ke atas mahkamah syariah

    Communiversity synergised academic activities towards sustainable “green” for urban poverty eradication and social well-being

    Background: The AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS) has initiated a community-synergised academic activities programme at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). This programme integrates an academic course from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (SOCA) with the needs of the Kampung Kerdas community. SOCA academics and students are engaged in an ongoing fertigation community garden project in Kampung Kerdas, Gombak, Selangor Darul Ehsan. While the project aims to incorporate sustainable, eco-friendly practices into the community’s daily routines, address urban poverty, and enhance social well-being, it also benefits SOCA students and academics by providing a practical training platform. Method: The study employs qualitative research methods to explore the community’s involvement in urban gardening as a means of empowerment. Through narrative analysis, the researchers examine stories to identify key themes such as empowerment, leadership, and environmental stewardship. The study also utilises in-depth interviews and participatory observation to gain insights into urban gardening initiatives' personal experiences, challenges, and benefits. Results: Through community-driven initiatives and educational workshops, the project promotes environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and social cohesion among community members. Simultaneously, by directly engaging with community members, SOCA students and academics also gain benefits, enabling them to apply their theoretical and empirical understanding from the course Work and Social Organisations in practice. Recommendation: Enhance collaboration between academia and the community by broadening hands-on, sustainable initiatives that empower residents while enriching students’ practical knowledge and sense of social responsibility. Conclusion: The project has created a sustainable model for urban poverty eradication and holistic community development by leveraging academic expertise and community participation among SOCA students and academics at AHAS KIRKHS, IIUM.     Predictive biostatistical modeling of uric acid levels based on high-density lipoprotein and alanine aminotransferase Using R

    This study uses biostatistics and R syntax to analyze and model High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), and Uric acid values. The work addresses the intricate relationships between these parameters to improve biological prediction accuracy. After Mardia’s test of multivariate normality, data normalization was done methodically to ensure variable comparability. A multiple linear regression model was used to develop a predictive model that estimated HDL and ALT contributions to Uric acid levels, revealing their relative importance. The regression model’s p-values and contribution percentages showed that ALT affected Uric acid levels more than HD

    The tapestry of Halal-related projects in IIUM – the funding and its outputs

    Understanding of funding trends and its outputs can assist stakeholders in making informed decisions that maximizes the value and impact of research and innovation investments. While the trend of research articles related to halal is increasing, there is no report on the trend of funding and its output. This study aims to fill in this gap by identifying the funding trends and outputs of halal-related research projects using the sampling population from the Research Management Centre (RMC) at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Upon obtaining access permission, 59 research projects related to halal were obtained and 41 projects were included after screening. The funding trend over the years (2012–2022) was found to be not linear with a particular decrease during the Covid-19 pandemic. The projects (total of RM3.4million) were funded in the range of RM10K–RM300K mostly by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). Most of the talents nurtured were at Master level. Only 26% of the projects produced intellectual properties. A total of 77 journals were published with 55 % were indexed in either Science (WOS), Scopus, or MyCite. Only one journal article was indexed as Q2 and none was indexed in Q1. No significant correlation was found between the total grant (RM) with total publications. To this end, this study provides insight into areas of priority in halal research and development. This would benefit many stakeholders and enable relevant entities to weigh the priorities and future-proof the halal industry through appropriate strategic funding and policy making

    A systematic review: an analysis of the promising effects of Myo-inositol and probiotics on the prevention of Gestational diabetes Mellitus

    Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses significant health risks for both mothers and infants, and this prevalence of the condition has significantly grown globally, necessitating effective preventive strategies. Myo-inositol and probiotics seem to have potential effects as supplements for GDM prevention. Materials and methods: This systematic review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, and Snowball technique was used to enhance the thoroughness of literature search. The retrieved papers were screened separately by two reviewers according to the eligibility criteria, in phases including title, abstract, and full text. The potential for bias in the included papers was evaluated separately by using the critical evaluation checklist from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Data from the included studies were extracted and presented in the table to analysis by the authors. Results: Out of the 311 articles, 11 articles fulfilled our eligibility criterion. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, four studies involving myo-inositol reported a significant reduction of GDM occurrence while no studies involving probiotics reported a significant effect of it on GDM prevention. No notable advantages or disadvantages were observed concerning the secondary outcomes, such as complications for both the infant and mother associated with GDM when using myo-inositol and probiotics supplements. Conclusion: A combination of 4 grammes of MI and 400 mg of folic acid (FA) has better beneficial nutrient for preventing GDM when started at around 12-13 weeks of pregnancy and continued until delivery. Although probiotics did not demonstrate preventative benefits on gestational diabetes mellitus GDM, they may have potential impacts on glucose metabolism in pregnant women when lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium subspecies strains are administered starting at 12-13 weeks of gestation

    Unveiling the impacts of food security on community health: a scoping review

    Food security, defined as consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food, is crucial in shaping community health. This scoping review explores the multidimensional impacts of food security on physical, mental, and social well-being. Malnutrition, stemming from both undernutrition and overnutrition, links food insecurity to health issues such as stunted growth, obesity, and chronic diseases like diabetes and heart conditions. Moreover, the psychological toll of food insecurity is significant, manifesting as stress, anxiety, and depression while exacerbating social inequalities and perpetuating cycles of poverty and ill health. Global and national perspectives reveal the persistent challenge of food insecurity, particularly in low- and middle-income regions, where economic disparities, climate change, and conflicts disrupt food systems. In Malaysia, rising food insecurity has highlighted gaps in nutrition quality and affordability, with vulnerable groups, including children and low-income households, experiencing the brunt of its effects. Addressing food security requires sustainable agricultural practices, effective policies, and robust social safety nets. National initiatives, such as Malaysia’s Agrofood Policy 2021-2030, focus on enhancing food self-sufficiency, supporting farmers, and fostering sustainable practices through technology and education. However, challenges such as aging agricultural populations, land limitations, and climate variability remain barriers. This paper underscores the importance of holistic approaches to food security, integrating nutrition education, mental health support, and economic interventions to foster healthier, more resilient communities.     Preliminary study of canine distemper virus transmission from small mammals to Malayan tiger at Kampung Besul Lama, Terengganu, Malaysia

    Background and Aim:The increasing human-wildlife interface due to urbanization and agricultural expansion has escalated the risk of zoonotic and interspecies disease transmission. Canine distemper virus (CDV), a highly contagious Morbillivirus, has been documented in various carnivorous and non-carnivorous species. In 2019, Malaysia reported its first case of CDV infection in a wild Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris malayensis) named Awang Besul in Kampung Besul Lama, Terengganu. However, the potential role of small mammals as intermediate hosts in CDV transmission remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the role of small mammals as potential reservoir hosts for CDV and to provide molecular confirmation of CDV infection in these species, thereby assessing their role in enzootic viral maintenance and cross-species transmission to apex predators like the Malayan tiger. Materials and Methods:Wildlife sampling was conducted between July 2023 and May 2024 in Kampung Besul Lama, where CDV was previously detected in a Malayan tiger. A total of 77 small mammals from different species were captured using baited live traps. Species identification was performed based on morphological characteristics. Biological samples were collected through nasal and ocular swabs and analyzed using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction to detect CDV RNA. Positive isolates were subjected to sequencing and Nucleotide Basic Local Alignment Search Tool analysis for molecular characterization. Results:Molecular detection confirmed CDV RNA in three common tree shrews (Tupaia glis), marking the first documented case of CDV in this species. Phylogenetic analysis of the viral hemagglutinin (H) gene revealed a 99.50% nucleotide similarity to a previously reported Malaysian CDV strain (BesulMY/Malaysia/PP894823.1). These findings suggest that small mammals may act as overlooked reservoir hosts, facilitating viral maintenance and spillover between domestic animals and wildlife. Conclusion:This study provides the first molecular evidence of CDV infection in tree shrews, highlighting their potential role in sustaining CDV in an enzootic state and acting as a conduit for interspecies transmission. Given the critically endangered status of Malayan tigers, targeted CDV surveillance and One Health-based disease mitigation strategies are essential to prevent further spillover events that could accelerate species declin
