Breaking silence: “encouraging dialogues and open discussions on human rights violations and gender based violence through Djumbais”
This study examines the pervasive issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and human rights violations with a focus on the Buba and Gabu regions. Despite existing legal frameworks, GBV remains a critical concern, with women disproportionately affected by domestic violence, sexual harassment and early marriage. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing community dialogues known as "Djumbais" to explore local perceptions, identify root causes, and propose actionable recommendations. Key findings reveal that 73% of respondents perceive GBV as "Very Common" or "Common," with gender inequality, cultural norms, and lack of education cited as primary drivers. The study also highlights the ineffectiveness of the justice system, with slow legal processes and case attrition further exacerbating the issue. Community perceptions indicate a strong need for improved legal enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and economic empowerment for women. The data show that 91.2% of respondents believe enhancing intercommunity dialogue is crucial for strengthening human rights and reducing GBV. However, barriers such as ethnic and linguistic divisions, political instability, and economic inequality hinder progress. The study underscores the importance of education and awareness in empowering individuals and shifting societal norms, with 64% of respondents familiar with the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA). Recommendations include strengthening legal frameworks, expanding support services for survivors, and fostering community-driven initiatives to promote gender equality. The study calls for increased investment in education, particularly for women, and the establishment of inclusive community spaces to facilitate dialogue and collaboration. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on human rights and GBV in post-conflict societies, offering a roadmap for policymakers, NGOs, and community leaders to address these pressing issues effectively
Mild cognitive impairment and its associated factors amongst the older people attending government health clinics in Kuantan
Introduction: Malaysia is undergoing a demographic transition towards an aging population, resulting in an anticipated rise in the number of older individuals at risk of developing dementia. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents an intermediate clinical stage between normal cognition and dementia, characterized by cognitive decline that does not significantly impair daily functional activities. Early detection of MCI is critical, as early-stage interventions and modifications of risk factors can yield promising outcomes.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of MCI and its associated factors among 327 older adults attending healthcare clinics. Data were collected using the Elderly Cognitive Assessment Questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale, and Barthel Index. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify significant factors of MCI.
Results: The prevalence of MCI in the study population was 18.7%, with the majority demonstrating poor control of comorbid conditions. Significant factors of MCI included being a widower (OR 0.4; 95%CI: 0.18, 0.94), increasing age (OR 0.92; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.97), and having diabetes (OR 3.49; 95% CI: 1.81, 6.73).
Conclusion: The findings highlight that a significant proportion of older adults are at risk of progressing to dementia but remain underdiagnosed during the early stages. Optimizing blood sugar control emerges as a crucial strategy to mitigate the progression of MCI to irreversible dementia. Implementation of active cognitive screening programs is essential for early identification and timely intervention
Modelling remedies to waqf liquidity constraints: the case of waqf unit trust model (WUTM)
The history of the waqf institution is rich with impressive achievements that cover each phase of socio-economic life and human development. However, recent initiatives among local waqf institutions indicate that the liquidity limitation contributes as the core concern to cultivating further development undertakings. This research aims to offer a sustainable source of financing through the application of the waqf unit trust model (WUTM) for local waqf institutions in mitigating their liquidity constraint to cultivate waqf undertakings such as land rejuvenation, health sector improvement, educational sector enhancement and other critical necessities. Specifically, this study aims to discover the liquidity constraints needed in waqf institutions in Malaysia, to propose an alternate WUTM in fostering liquidity of waqf assets, and to explore the pertinent stakeholders’ stance on the feasibility of the model proposed. This research employs in-depth interview methods for data collection with the waqf practitioners such as authorities from the State Islamic Religious Council (SIRC), financial consultants linked to capital market development, academicians engaged with waqf-related projects, and regulators of Islamic capital market stationed in Klang Valley (the State of Selangor and Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur), Penang and Johor state of Malaysia. Findings propose the craft of the WUTM framework could potentially assist in liquidity pooling, cash flow solutions and generate continuous income and wealth. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a potential remedy for the liquidity constraint faced by waqf institution
Bridging the gap: awareness of Muslim friendly tourism and hospitality assurance and recognition (MFAR) in Pagoh edu hub
Muslim friendly tourism is expanding globally, with Malaysia positioning itself as a leader through initiatives like the Muslim friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) certificate. However, awareness of MFAR remains limited at the community level, particularly within educational hubs such as Pagoh Edu Hub. This study aims to assess the level of MFAR awareness among students, staff, and local entrepreneurs in Pagoh and to explore strategies for promoting Muslim-friendly tourism practices. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative surveys (n=162) and qualitative interviews (n=15) across institutions such as IIUM, UTHM, and local SMEs. Findings reveal a significant gap in MFAR awareness only 25% of respondents recognized the MFAR logo despite widespread support for halal and Shariah-compliant tourism features. Over 90% valued halal-certified food, prayer facilities, and Muslim-friendly accommodations in travel decisions. The study highlights a disconnect between community values and formal tourism recognition schemes. It recommends targeted awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and educational outreach to improve MFAR visibility. These efforts are critical for advancing inclusive tourism, aligning with Malaysia’s halal tourism agenda, and enhancing socio-economic opportunities in local communities

Microplastic pollution in the marine environment has reached increasingly alarming levels globally. Research on microplastic contamination in marine organisms remains limited in Malaysia, particularly for species that are also consumed as seafood and are staple dishes, such as the kawakawa fish (Euthynnus affinis). This study extracted a total of 207 organs from 69 kawakawa fish, with three organs (i.e., gastrointestinal tract, gills, and skin) taken from each fish sampled from four major fish landing sites in Malaysia: Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu; Kuantan, Pahang; Mersing, Johor; and Kuala Selangor, Selangor. The results showed that the skin of the kawakawa fish had the highest microplastic content (1.52 ± 0.91 microplastics per gram) compared to the gill and gastrointestinal tract organs. The predominant type of microplastic identified was fiber (89.95%), followed by fragments (10.05%). The most frequently detected colors of microplastics were black (61.58%) and blue (21.39%). Microplastics in the size range of 0.01-1.00 mm were the most commonly found. There was a positive correlation between the abundance of microplastics and the body size of the fish, indicating that microplastic content in kawakawa fish increases with age and body size. The data from this study found microplastics in all the organs of the kawakawa fish examined, therefore, it is recommended that the outer skin of kawakawa fish be thoroughly cleaned, and internal organs such as the gills and gastrointestinal tract be gutted before being used in any food preparation to reduce the risk of microplastic ingestion by humans through the consumption of this fish
Autonomous learning among Arabic learners: implications for tertiary-level education
As the demand for Arabic proficiency grows in an increasingly interconnected world, fostering autonomous learning becomes essential for students. This study investigates the level of autonomous learning among Arabic language learners in a tertiary context. A quantitative survey is employed using Murase’s (2015) Measuring Instrument for Language Learner Autonomy (MILLA) with a 5-point Likert scale. One hundred forty-four diploma students majoring in Islamic Studies at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (UniSIRAJ), Malaysia, attempted the questionnaire and was analyzed using SPSS. The results indicate a high level of autonomous learning among the participants, with sociocultural, technical, political-critical, and psychological factors significantly contributing to this autonomy. This study highlights the importance of fostering an environment that encourages autonomous learning and contributes to more effective and engaging Arabic language education. The implications of these findings suggest actionable strategies for educators and institutions to enhance autonomous learning, thereby improving language outcomes for tertiary-level students
Influence of ta’awun among co-operative societies in Malaysia in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture
The cooperative movement in Malaysia practices cooperation within individual cooperatives. Cooperation among
cooperatives across state boundaries and principal activities is essential, particularly in sustaining food security through
sustainable agriculture. Various activities within the food security value chain, including farming, financing, weeding,
fertilizing, harvesting, processing, distribution, and profit generation, require strong collaboration among the 14,000
cooperatives in Malaysia. These activities encompass Islamic microfinance, sustainable food production, and community supported agriculture. Moreover, the role of Islamic principles and waqf land development in achieving sustainability is
critical. However, there are structural inefficiencies that hinder innovation in enhancing Malaysia's food security and
sustainable development. This study aims to explore the influence of ta’awun (mutual cooperation) among cooperatives in Malaysia in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture. The study employed focus group discussions (FGDs) with managers of cooperatives in Malaysia. FGDs were conducted in every state, with five managers participating in each session. In total, 70 managers participated in the discussions. The FGDs identified several themes, drivers, and factors influencing taawun among cooperative movements in Malaysia in sustaining food security through sustainable agriculture. Participants suggested the need for a conglomerate of cooperatives from various sectors to engage in sustainable agriculture activities, ultimately sustaining food security for the community. Future research should employ multiple case study methods to gain deeper insights into the influence of taawun among cooperative movements in Malaysia
Tolak dokumen promosi liberalisme, kekal pertahan prinsip perlembagaan
