Assessment of climate change awareness among rural forest communities

    No full text
This study assesses the awareness of climate change among rural forest communities, focusing on how socio-demographic profiles influence perceptions of climate-related phenomena. Using quantitative data collected from local respondents, the analysis examined the relationships between awareness of climate impacts including heat waves, temperature variations, rainfall changes, and flooding and respondents’ characteristics, including gender, religion, education, occupation, and district location. The results revealed that religion and district were the most significant factors influencing awareness of heat waves and temperature changes, while gender and religious education also showed notable effects. In contrast, awareness of rainfall and flooding was relatively uniform across groups, suggesting shared experiences of these recurrent events. The findings suggest that climate change awareness and understanding require enhancement through appropriate content and effective communication channels. Overall, the findings demonstrated a moderate level of awareness of climate change among rural forest communities

A response to feminist theology on women's access to knowledge in Islam: a Qur'anic reappraisal of the Amanah

    No full text
This paper examines contemporary feminist theological critiques of Islam that highlight the historical marginalization of women in religious knowledge and authority. They argue that patriarchal interpretations have overshadowed the Qur’an’s egalitarian message, excluding women from epistemic participation. While these critiques offer valuable insights, they often assume that Islamic epistemology is inherently patriarchal or irreversibly shaped by male-dominated traditions. This study challenges that assumption by analysing the Qur’anic concept of amanah (trust), which frames both men and women as rational agents equally responsible for seeking and upholding divine knowledge. The paper unfolds in three parts. First, it analyses Sa'diyya Shaikh’s feminist approach to hadith and Qur’anic interpretation, identifying methodological limitations and selective readings that risk undermining the coherence of the Islamic epistemic tradition. Second, it reconstructs a Qur’anic epistemology centred on amanah, emphasizing knowledge-seeking as a divine mandate shared by both genders. Finally, the study synthesizes these insights to propose a constructive theological vision rooted in the Qur’an’s ethical and metaphysical framework. Rather than merely responding to feminist critiques, this paper reclaims Islamic theology as an inclusive and universal space that mandates women’s active role in the production and transmission of knowledg

Grammatical expressions of time in English

    Get PDF
Language educators have been sharing their grievances over the poor mastery of English among the L2 learners. Many past studies demonstrated that L2 learners encountered difficulties in understanding and using grammatical features including Tenses. Several other studies pointed out that the difficulties are due to the differences between the learners’ first language (L1) and the target language (L2) in terms of the structure, leading them to transfer their knowledge of L1 to L2 and eventually, producing many language errors. Such an occurrence is called ‘Negative Language Transfer’. Nevertheless, not always that the transferring of the L1 knowledge to L2 will cause errors. In some studies, it was shown that knowing the differences as well as similarities between L1 and L2 would reversely facilitate the learners to acquire L2 and to be good in both languages. This paper, apart from highlighting problems faced by the L2 learners in using appropriate English Tenses, seeks to review past studies examining the grammatical expressions used to convey time messages in English. It is hoped that with the information presented, language educators would be able to devise teaching techniques that would make the L2 learners notice the differences between English (L2) and their L1s in terms of the grammatical expressions used to convey time message

Implementation of complex engineering problems (CEP) and complex engineering activities (CEA) of undergraduate programmes in Malaysia

    Get PDF
For decades, complex problem-solving skill has been identified as one of the key components required from fresh graduates to succeed in the workforce market. Specific for engineering undergraduate programmes in Malaysia, the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Standard 2020 has prescribed the complex engineering problem (CEP) solving skills and complex engineering activities (CEA) as a part of its graduate attributes. However, in many cases, engineering programmes lack of a clear understanding of the requirements of complex engineering problems, hindering the students' mastery of engineering related problem-solving skills to face real-world problems’ complexity. In this paper, an evaluation on the awareness and implementation of complex problem solving (CEP) skills and complex engineering activities (CEA) in the undergraduate engineering programmes in Malaysia is presented. Survey questionnaires were designed to gather feedback from academicians across various higher learning institutions (HLIs) that offer engineering programmes. This study which involves 120 experienced engineering lecturers from 23 public and private HLIs shows that project-based courses is the common courses chosen to address CEP and CEA including final year project, integrated design project, and design-related courses. The assessments of CEP and CEA are mostly conducted on a semester basis, utilizing project-based assessment. Problem-based learning (PBL) is the most widely chosen as teaching and learning strategy, engaging students in solving real-world problems, encouraging active participation, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge. In summary, this study contributes to understanding how CEP and CEA are implemented in undergraduate engineering programmes, and thereby represents a general framework to aid with the implementation of CEP and CEA in engineering education. Further research could explore the effectiveness and impact of these teaching and learning strategies on students' learning outcomes, students’ abilities to apply CEP and CEA principles in real-world scenario

    Get PDF
This study explores the challenges faced by Muslim women in adventure tourism, aiming to uncover social, cultural, and logistical barriers that limit their participation. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine Muslim women who actively engage in adventure activities. The findings reveal that participants face several obstacles, including family related safety concerns, discrimination, harassment, and a lack of appropriate infrastructure and privacy. Despite these challenges, the women expressed a strong desire to continue participating in such activities, highlighting the need for tourism providers to adopt gender-sensitive and culturally respectful practices. While the study is limited by its small sample size and specific cultural context, it offers important insights for future research and industry practices. Practical implications include the development of inclusive services such as female only groups, private facilities, and culturally aware staff training. This research adds original value by shedding light on an underrepresented group in tourism literature and offers actionable recommendations to enhance the travel experiences of Muslim women

    Get PDF
This study investigates the influence of environmental behaviour factors, environmental knowledge, control centre, personal responsibility, and attitude on the intention to use green packaging among marine tourists in Bangladesh. Using the framework of Environmental Responsible Behaviour (ERB) theory, this empirical study explores how individuals’ cognitive and attitudinal factors shape sustainable consumption patterns in coastal tourism areas. This study collected a total of 380 data points from visiting tourists in Cox’s Bazar marine tourism destinations in Bangladesh through structured questionnaires and face-to-face conversations. After data screening, 365 data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (SEM-AMOS). Results indicate that environmental knowledge, control centre, personal responsibility and attitude significantly predict green packaging usage intention. The findings provide practical implications for policymakers and tourism marketers to design educational campaigns and behavioural interventions promoting sustainable packaging choices. This study enriches the literature on green consumer behaviour in developing nations and offers insights into sustainable tourism management. The study will improve the researchers' capacity to identify additional external variables for examining the integration of ERB factors, especially regarding marine tourists’ usage intentions toward green packaging in Bangladesh

Local authorities in many countries serve local communities by facilitating and maintaining public amenities. Apart from that, local authorities also manage the planning and development of local tourism. A tremendous number of responsibilities and work are burdening local authorities to manage the planning and development of tourism islands. This research aim is to identify management barriers faced by local authorities managing the Peninsular Malaysia Marine Park Islands. The results were obtained from in-depth interviews with the four local authority officers and document analysis. The local authorities are Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Terengganu (MBKT) for Redang Island, Majlis Daerah Marang (MDM) for Kapas Island, Majlis Daerah Besut (MDB) for Perhentian Island and Tioman Development Authority (TDA) for Tioman Island. Two officers from each local authority were interviewed. The officers are from the Department of Town Planning and the Department of Municipal Services and Licensing. Altogether, nine officers were interviewed. Several barriers have emerged from the analysis. The results indicated that six barriers are common, and three barriers are specific to the departments. The common barriers are a lack of funding, a lack of staff, time constraints, substantial distance from the mainland and a lack of commitment from top management and a lack of intergovernmental coordination/collaboration. This research can be extended to marine parks located in Sabah and Sarawak, and a comparative study can be accomplished for further improvements in the planning and management of the MPI
