Celebrating unity and tradition: Eid al-Fitr in Malaysia
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a joyous occasion marking the successful completion of a month-long fast.
While the idea of the Eid al-Fitr celebration remains the same worldwide, the customary ways in which the day is celebrated vary across the globe. In this short article, I will explore the unique features of the Eid al-Fitr celebration in Malaysia.
Malaysia, nestled between Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore, is a democratic country that gained its independence from Britain in 1957. It is a multilingual, multireligious, and multicultural nation. As Muslims make up the majority of the population, Islam is the country's official religion.
As a nation consisting of many different racial groups, Malaysians have learned to live together in peace and harmony, accepting one another as fellow Malaysians. Ever since its birth as a nation, Malaysia has embraced the idea of coexistence. Up until now, Malaysia has been a good role model for many other nations when it comes to racial integration.
Though Malay is the official language of Malaysia, the country allows the freedom to speak other languages, including English, Chinese, and Tamil. Additionally, people are free to practice their customs and celebrate their religious festivals.
Among all the religious festivals celebrated in Malaysia, Eid al-Fitr is the grandest celebration. In Malaysia, Eid al-Fitr is more commonly known as Hari Raya Puasa or just Hari Raya
Prevalence of hearing loss and its associations with anxiety and depression among older people in Kuantan, Pahang
Background: The prevalence of hearing loss (HL) increases with age, and globally more than 25% of older people aged 60 years and older are affected by HL. Studies consistently demonstrate that HL is associated with anxiety, depression, and diminished quality of life. However, there is limited data on these associations among older people in Malaysia. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss and examine its association with anxiety and depression among older people.
Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 273 older people aged 60 years and older living in the community in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia from February to May 2022. The participants were selected by convenience sampling. The instrument used for data collection was a self-administered questionnaire consisting of four parts; sociodemographic background, Hearing Handicap Inventory Elderly (HHIE), Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI), and Malay version of Geriatric Depression Scale (MGDS-14). Data were analysed as descriptive and inferential analysis (Chi-square test) using SPSS version 24.0.
Results: The prevalence of mild to moderate HL was 35.5% and severe HL was 55.7%. It was found that age (p=0.002), gender (p=0.023), marital status (p=0.007), and self-reported health status (p=0.001) were significantly associated with hearing loss. Anxiety (p=0.001) and depression (p=0.001) were significantly associated with hearing loss.
Conclusion: The prevalence of HL was consistent with previous studies, which is considered high in Malaysia. Given the significant associations between anxiety and depression with HL, early detection and effective management of hearing loss are important to improve the quality of life of older people
A follow up study on lung cancer survival in the state hospital in east coast state of Pahang
INTRODUCTION: There is lack of data of lung cancer survival in Malaysia. MATERIAL AND METHODS:This study was to determine the survival of lung cancer patients andfactors affecting the survival in Kuantan, Pahang. A total of 170 lung cancer patientsconfirmed by histology from 1st January 2014 to 31 December 2017 were recruited inthe study. Their demographic data, ECOG performance status, staging and treatmentwere recorded. Survival time was defined in weeks from the date of histologicaldiagnosis made to the date of death of the patients. Kaplan-Meier curve was used todetermine the median overall survival and log-rank test was used to test the survivaldifferences between each subgroup. Multivariate analysis using COX regression wasused to determine factors affecting its survival.RESULTS: The median age of the170 patients was 63 years old, majority were males (74%) and smokers (64%).Adenocarcinoma (74.7%) was the most common histology followed by squamous cellcarcinoma (18.8%). Almost all patient presented at the clinic at stage 3 or 4 (98%) butmajority had ECOG 0-2 (64.3%). Median overall survival was 28.7 weeks. In themultivariate analysis, “supportive treatment” and “poor ECOG performance status”were independent predictors of death with thehazard ratio of 1.4 (95%CI 1.17 to 1.66)and 3.0 (95%CI 2.05 to 4.39) times respectively.CONCLUSION: Majority of lungcancer patients in Pahang presented with advanced disease with overall median survivalof 28.7 weeks. Patients treated with supportive care and poor ECOG performancestatus were the two independent poor prognostic factors for survival
Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding pressure injury (PI) prevention among nurses in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and medical ward at Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM), Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia
Background: This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to pressure injury (PI) prevention among nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and medical ward at SASMEC@IIUM.
Methods: A total of 120 staff nurses (60 from each ward) participated in this cross-sectional study. We used a validated questionnaire that was translated for accessibility. The Cronbach’s alpha values for knowledge, attitude, and practice of PI prevention were 0.68, 0.78, and 0.88, respectively. The questionnaire was distributed via WhatsApp, and data were collected using an online Google Form. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.
Results: The findings indicate that staff nurses in both the ICU and medical wards exhibited a high level of knowledge and positive attitudes toward PI prevention, with mean scores (standard deviation) of 26.53 (10.35) for knowledge and 45.21 (6.65) for attitude. Furthermore, the participants demonstrated good practices regarding PI prevention, with a mean score (standard deviation) of 25.57 (2.25). The study revealed no significant association between the KAP of PI prevention and the nursing department. However, a significant association was found between gender and the frequency of reading articles, which influenced nurses' attitudes toward PI prevention.
Conclusion: This study highlights considerable knowledge gaps among nurses regarding PI prevention, despite their positive attitudes and commendable practices. These findings emphasize the urgent need for targeted educational initiatives to enhance knowledge, especially in non-critical care settings. Integrating evidence-based guidelines with customized training programs could further improve patient care outcomes
Transforming nursing education: evaluating knowledge and practices in pressure ulcer prevention among undergraduate nursing students at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
Pressure ulcers are a significant concern in healthcare settings, particularly for
immobile patients. Nursing students play a key role in preventing these injuries,
making their preparedness essential for improved patient outcomes. Gaps in the
practical application of pressure ulcer prevention knowledge among nursing students
may hinder their clinical effectiveness. This study assessed the knowledge and
practices of undergraduate nursing students at the International Islamic University
Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan Campus, regarding pressure ulcer prevention. A crosssectional study was conducted using the Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge
Test (PZ-PUKT) 2016 questionnaire. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 160
students. Data were analysed using SPSS version 27. Of the participants (response rate:
70.48%), 71.25% demonstrated high knowledge, but only 16.25% achieved satisfactory
practice scores, with poor practice observed in 83.75%. There was no significant
association between the year of study and knowledge or practice levels. These findings
highlight the need for improved practical training and curricular enhancements to align
theoretical knowledge with clinical practice in pressure ulcer prevention

Job satisfaction influenced by training satisfaction: an empirical study of university employees
The aim of this research is to establish a framework that assesses the factors that influence
job satisfaction, specifically through the lens of training among university employees. A
comprehensive instrument was developed based on various established studies that
encompassed all variables of the research. The data collected from the respondents were
analysed using SPSS software, and reliability tests and regression analysis were carried out
to determine the relationship between all training factors and job satisfaction. The study
revealed that all of the overall training dimensions had a positive correlation with training
satisfaction in terms of job satisfaction. This research is significant as it contributes to the
development of training and employee development strategies in universities. Previous
research has largely focused on the effects of training in other industries, with very few
studies investigating the relationship between job satisfaction and training satisfaction in
higher learning institutions. Job satisfaction is a crucial aspect that impacts employee
motivation, commitment, and productivity, and it is influenced by various factors, including
training. Employee training and development programs play a significant role in enhancing
employee skills, knowledge, and performance, which consequently leads to increased job
satisfaction. This study has provided valuable insights into the relationship between training
satisfaction and job satisfaction, highlighting the importance of investing in employee
training and development programs for the overall success of universities
Validity, reliability and cross-cultural adaptation of Muslims’ perceptions and attitudes towards mental health scale (M-PAMH) among Muslims in Malaysia
The Muslims have unique attitudes and perceptions towards mental health. However, studies on this are mostly limited to Muslims in minority Muslim communities possibly due to presumption that Muslims in majority Muslim countries all share the same beliefs and perceptions. This study aims to examine the cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the Muslims’ Perceptions and Attitudes towards Mental Health Scale (M-PAMH) among Muslims in a majority Muslim country, namely Malaysia, among both Muslim men and women. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. The M-PAMH Malay was found to be valid and reliable to assess the four domains outlined in earlier study. Two new items were added that indicated unique cultural differences. The rigorous process of translating and adapting the M-PAMH scale for the Malaysian Muslim population highlights the need to consider religious terms, cultural nuances, and contextual differences to ensure both semantic and conceptual equivalenc
