    Risks in lowering entry requirements

    No full text
THE recent decision by the Health Ministry to reduce the minimum Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) credit requirement for nursing diploma programmes from five to three is a matter of concern. While the aim is to address the ongoing nursing shortage, this approach will do little to uphold the dignity and professionalism of nursing. Nursing is not just a job, it is a skilled profession requiring critical thinking, clinical expertise, and ethical responsibility. Lowering entry requirements risks compromising the quality of our future nursing workforce and, ultimately, patient care. Although this policy is intended to last for two years (2025 and 2026), the consequences will linger far beyond that, affecting both the profession’s standards and its public perception. This is not the first time Malaysia has attempted to expand the nursing workforce by easing academic entry criteria. Historically, when the bar was set too low, many students struggled to pass their licensing examinations, leading to high failure rates

Assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) towards biosafety among CFS IIUM students

    No full text
Regular exposure to risks necessitates ongoing monitoring for laboratory personnel and students. Both parties must prioritise biosafety awareness. Insufficient empirical data suggests that students have inadequate knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) when it comes to biosafety procedures. This raise worries regarding their safety practices in laboratories. Therefore, this study aims to address this issue particularly to assess biosafety knowledge, attitudes and practices among CFS IIUM students, across all biological students at the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). A comprehensive cross-sectional investigation was carried out on the students. Data was gathered by means of an online self-administered questionnaire using Google Forms, targeting students enrolled in CFS IIUM. The results revealed there is a high level of attitude and practice towards biosafety protocols. Still, their knowledge needs slight improvement, particularly in specific areas like the number of containers used to transfer the biological sample. Training on biosafety is imperative to enhance knowledge, attitude and practice among CFS IIUM students. Furthermore, it is necessary to build efficient, operational, and wellexecuted biosafety policy procedures overseen by the institution. By addressing these deficiencies, safety standards can be improved, reducing the likelihood of accidents or exposure to dangers, and ultimately establishing safer laboratory settings for both students and staff

Belangkas; haiwan purba yang perlukan pembelaan

    No full text

Facilitating English Language teaching through AI- based drama in Palestine

    No full text
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly reshape the landscape of education through the integration of AI- powered tools, personalized learning algorithms, and virtual and augmented reality. In a study exploring the integration of AI- based drama in English language teaching in Palestine, a cohort of 43 teachers from both governmental and private schools participated in a questionnaire- based assessment. The survey sought to capture their perspectives on AI, AI- based drama techniques, the impact of AI in EFL classrooms, and the challenges associated with its implementation. Utilizing SPSS (V. 23), descriptive statistics, independent sample t- tests, and ANOVA tests were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed a prevailing optimism among the participating educators, indicating their confidence in the potential of AI to enhance the EFL teaching and learning experience. Furthermore, the teachers identified financial and technical hurdles as the primary challenges. The findings underscore the imperative for comprehensive teacher training programs focused on effectively integrating AI tools in EFL education

Unfolding stories: narratives of women with breast cancer

    Get PDF
This chapter illustrates how I shifted from post-positivist thinking to a constructivist approach during a research project in the field of nursing. Many Malaysian women, particularly those with breast cancer, tend to seek medical help late, often resulting in advanced-stage diagnoses by the time they consult with their medical team. As a nurse educator, I aimed to understand the reasons behind this delay, particularly in terms of how these women made their treatment decisions. This understanding is crucial for improving the advice and support we provide to women facing similar situations. As I intended to explore why this was happening, I chose a qualitative design and conducted interviews to gain deeper insights. However, as a statistician, I found qualitative research design to be initially challenging for me. This is because there is a constructed multiple reality in qualitative approach that is based on the experiences, circumstances, or situations with consideration of emotions, perceptions, actions, and interaction that is not possible to replicate because each individual's experiences are personal and subjective. The lens of objectivist might limit or not yield the desired result due to the realisation that human beings are by nature vastly different subjects of study even though they are witnessing or experiencing the same event. Moreover, the experiences, views, and perceptions are difficult to measure using empirical methods and numeric assessment because every individual is unique. Therefore, qualitative approach is recognised as having the potential to give a voice to people through the ability to bring out hidden and marginalised stories that may reveal a deeper understanding of the tellers' own lives. By exploring the participants' experiences, I was able to gain multiple perspectives that deepened my understanding of the decision-making processes related to breast cancer. I now understand that different contexts can lead to varying interpretations, even when participants and I share a common language, traditions, and culture. This chapter ends with the conviction that the qualitative research paradigm is crucial in contributing to the existing body of medical knowledge, particularly as it relates to the human experience of illness

Blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystem: balancing innovation and Islamic ethics for sustainable finance

    Get PDF
This chapter explores the fusion of blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies within Islamic finance. It examines the ethical dimensions, practical applications, and challenges of integrating these technologies in line with Shari’ah principles. The study aims to enhance financial inclusion, transparency, and eco-friendly operations while proposing regulatory frameworks for sustainable green finance. The study adopts a qualitative research strategy, leaning on a thorough review of existing literature, case studies on Islamic financial institutions, and the examination of Shari’ah-compliant cryptocurrency models. The findings bear considerable implications for policymakers, regulators, and Islamic financial bodies. Financial institutions are encouraged to embrace blockchain technology to heighten the transparency and efficiency of financial transactions and to invest in research and development to uncover innovative uses of these technologies in Islamic finance
