Exploring smokers' perspectives on health status and health seeking behavior: a qualitative exploration
Objective: Smokers might tend to ignore when communicating about smoking health risks. We used Bourdieu’s conceptual tool to guide and explore their perception of being healthy despite their smoking behavior and their health seeking practice.
Material and Methods: A qualitative method, using a semi-structured interview as the main method of collecting the data, was used. This method was implemented because of its flexibility in the exploration, based on participant responses.
Results: The findings are reported as per the thematic analysis of 15 purposively selected participants. The ages of the 15 participants varied from 20 to 55 years old, and they were selected from the quantitative study to participate voluntarily in this qualitative exploration. Among them, 14 were males and one was female. The ethnic representation in this qualitative part were Malays (n=14) and Chinese (n=1). The duration of smoking varied in the sample, with the majority smoking for more than five years.
Conclusion: This study better understands smokers’ health perception and their health-seeking behavior. Firstly, the perception of the less harmful effects of smoking on the health of smokers was understood within the views of Bourdieu’s Theory of Cultural Health Capital, which, in turn poses challenges to smoking cessation programs and campaigns. This study reported that smokers perceived themselves as healthy, and thus continued their smoking habit despite knowing its side effects
Individual, host–vector interactions, and environmental risk factors for Plasmodium knowlesi malaria among at-risk communities in Peninsular Malaysia: a case–control study
Background: Highlighting the individual, host–vector interactions, and environmental risk factors for knowlesi
malaria were consequential toward more focused and effective prevention and control strategies. This study aims to
identify the individual, host–vector interactions, and environmental risk factors for Plasmodium knowlesi malaria
among at-risk communities in PeninsularMalaysia.
Materials and Methods: A case–control study was conducted involving laboratory-confirmed cases of P.
knowlesi malaria, while a locality-matched individual with no history of fever and tested negative for malaria
was taken as control. Univariate and multiple logistic regression were applied to evaluate the potential risk
factors among respondents using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0.
Results: Results showed higher cases among males as compared to females (76.1% vs. 23.9%). Multiple logistic
regression analysis showed being male is 3.51 higher risk (p < 0.001) to become a case. Respondents whose
place of work or study is near the forest edge have 44.0% lower risk (p = 0.030), while those living in the Orang
Asli village were 56.0% lower risk as compared to the organized village to become a case (p = 0.035).
Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that gender emerges as an independent individual risk factor while
residing near a forest edge, in an Orang Asli village, or occupying workers’ longhouses situated in hilly areas
lowered the environmental risk among respondents. These findings attested that alternative directions must be
considered in addressing the known risk factors associated with this type of malaria and the design of prevention
and control programs should be tailored to the unique characteristics of each population
Ternary metal–organic framework composite with nanocellulose and deep eutectic solvent for the adsorptive removal of 3‑MCPD esters
Removal of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDEs) from edible oils is essential for better quality food consumption
due to its detrimental effects on human health. Herein, we present a simple strategy for the in situ growth of a ternary
metal–organic framework (Fe–Mn–MOF/N4) with nanocellulose (NC) extracted from almond shells using sulfuric acid
(ASS) as a support for 3-MCPD adsorption in spiked extra virgin olive (EVO) oil. The sugar-based deep eutectic solvent
(SDES) was also employed as co-solvent to enhance the active sites of the synthesized MOF, thereby increasing the adsorption
capacity of the primary solid adsorbents, such as MOF and NC-ASS. The Fe–Mn–MOF/N4 achieved 85% removal
of 3-MCPD under optimal conditions (6 h, 40 °C, 60 mg dose of Fe–Mn-MOF/N4, 1 g of NC-ASS, and 200 μL of SDES)
via an indirect method. The adsorption performance, analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, showed
excellent adsorption capacity while maintaining the quality of EVO oil within acceptable limits after treatment. Importantly,
Fe–Mn–MOF/N4 could be reused up to five times, with an adsorption efficiency of 48.3% after the final cycle, demonstrating
its sustainability. However, further optimization is needed to prevent the gradual decline in adsorption efficiency and to
meet the regulatory standards. This method offers a sustainable, effective solution for 3-MCPDE reduction, highlighting the
potential of MOF-based materials to enhance food safety by reducing harmful contaminants in edible oils and food products

Pressure injury prevention: a scoping review of nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices
Pressure injuries are a significant concern in healthcare settings, impacting patient outcomes and quality of care. Nurses play a crucial role in preventing these injuries, yet knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among nurses remain inconsistent globally. This scoping review examines the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to pressure injury prevention among nurses and identifies influencing factors. A systematic search of scholarly articles was conducted using ProQuest Health & Medical Complete and ScienceDirect databases, complemented by a manual search of reference lists. Inclusion criteria were studies published within the past five years, available in English, and focused on KAP related to pressure injury prevention among nurses. The PRISMA framework guided the selection of 22 studies for this review. Studies demonstrated variability in KAP levels, with gaps noted in the knowledge of pressure injury aetiology, classification, and prevention strategies. Positive attitudes toward prevention were associated with training, education, and experience. Practices varied, with higher levels observed among critical care nurses and those with access to updated guidelines. Regional differences highlighted the need for targeted interventions in low-resource settings. The findings emphasize the need for standardized training programs, evidence-based guidelines, and policy initiatives to enhance nurses' KAP in pressure injury prevention. Future research should validate the developed KAP framework and assess its effectiveness in clinical settings

Intraperitoneal foreign body following repeated self-mutilation: a case report
Background: A foreign body found incidentally on abdominal X-ray is commonly secondary to ingestion, either intentional or accidental. It can also lodge within the peritoneal cavity following a definite history of an incident of penetrating injury to the abdomen by a sharp penetrating object. It is a rare instance where a blunt object penetrates the abdominal wall following chronic, repeated self-inflicted trauma to the umbilicus.
Case Description: We report a case of a young man with a history of repeated habitual self-mutilation to his umbilicus using a blunt object, with no intention of self-harm. This led to the lodgment of the object within the peritoneal cavity. An initial diagnostic challenge arose due to the absence of abdominal symptom as well as physical sign of injury on the abdomen. Computed tomography (CT) scan was unable to distinguish between intra- vs. extra-luminal location of the object, due to the presence of significant artifacts. The exact location of the object was successfully determined by laparoscopic examination. The patient was treated by laparoscopic extraction of the foreign body. He was discharged well following surgery.
Conclusions: Laparoscopic surgery is invaluable in the diagnosis and management of intraperitoneal foreign object whose location cannot be ascertained by CT scan
