Healthy gums does It matter? amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth (AIGO): a case report

    Get PDF
Background: Calcium channel blockers are one of the recognizable drug-induced gingival overgrowth despite anticonvulsants and immunosuppressants. We report a case of an elderly man with underlying essential hypertension who developed amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth (AIGO). Case Presentation: A 70-year-old elderly male who has hypertension and dyslipidemia and on daily tablets of amlodipine 10 mg and simvastatin 10 mg for the past 4 years presented with progressive swelling of upper and right lower gums for 3 months. He had painless and gradual enlargement of the gingiva associated with gum discomfort, causing difficulty in chewing, mal-alignment, and loosening of the teeth of the gums involved. Oral examinations show poor oral hygiene with gingival overgrowth found throughout the maxilla and right mandible, especially over the right buccal region. After ruling out other causes, based on clinical findings amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth was confirmed for this patient. We substituted an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor for amlodipine, and within a few days, the progress of the disease was halted. Discussion: Generally, AIGO occurs within the first 3 months of starting a dose of amlodipine 10 mg/day. As in our patient, however, the enlargement occurred after 4 years of taking the drug at a dose of 10 mg daily. The time duration of gingival overgrowth varies in our case due to multifactorial causes such as genetic susceptibility and host response to drug-induced gingival fibroblasts, interleukins, and matrix-metalloproteinases. Other than that, poor oral hygiene in this patient plays an important role in gingival overgrowth as well. This was supported by the strong relation between inflammation and AIGO demonstrated by the fact that AIGO can be successfully controlled even under continuous amlodipine administration by meticulous professional and individual oral hygiene. Conclusion: Amlodipine is a commonly prescribed antihypertensive drug in primary care, every healthcare practitioner should be aware of this usually overlooked but potentially harmful side effect of generalized gingival overgrowth. Poor oral hygiene is one of the important risk factors for AIGO that need to be addressed, thus frequent dental check-ups are recommended for every patient who is on this medication in order to prevent this adverse effect

Event-based cybersecurity risk assessment: identifying potential cyber-attacks in organisations

    No full text
Cybersecurity risk assessment is crucial for organisations since cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated and dynamic. This study investigates how organisations identify potential cyber-attacks within an event-based risk assessment context. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten cybersecurity experts from diverse organisations. The experts possess extensive strategic, technical, and advisory expertise in the field. Thematic analysis of the data revealed four key practices: (i)collaborative brainstorminginvolving diverse stakeholders, (ii)referring to historical data and past incident logs, (iii)staying updated on current cyber-attackstrends, and (iv)using established frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27005 supplemented with dynamic resources. These findings underscore the importance of integrating diverse methods and perspectives into event-based cybersecurity risk assessments to address evolving threats. The study contributes to theory and practice by offering actionable insights for organisations to identify potential cyber-attackswithin an event-based cybersecurity risk assessment framework. Limitations are acknowledged, including reliance on self-reported data and a small sample size, with recommendations provided for future researc

Teachers play a key role in the educational process; therefore, it is important to give them the necessary attention to ensure they effectively fulfil their pedagogical responsibilities. Hence the current research aims to examine the influence of economic life satisfaction, health life satisfaction, social respect on job performance of secondary school teachers in Yemen. The researcher adopted a descriptive method, utilizing a survey that aligns with the nature and objectives of the study. Moreover, the researcher used a questionnaire as a data collection instrument and applied it on the random sample that consists of 408 male and female teachers in secondary schools for the academic year 2023/2024 in Yemen. The results showed a positive relationship between life satisfaction with its three dimensions on job performance. Based on the study's findings, the researcher provided several recommendations for educational officials in Yemen. The most significant of these recommendations is the need to ensure adequate support and attention for teachers in government schools, in alignment with their critical role in societal development. Teachers play an essential role in shaping future generations. Recognizing their efforts through financial and moral incentives can significantly enhance their job performance

Organized Tawarruq in Bursa Souq al-Sila’, Malaysia: a critical examination of Shariah compliance

    Get PDF
Bursa Souq al-Sila’ (BSAS) is Malaysia’s first Shariah-compliant commodity trading platform, using crude palm oil to facilitate Islamic finance contracts such as Murabaha and organized Tawarruq. While organized Tawarruq has become a key liquidity-management tool for Islamic banks, its resemblance to interest-based lending (riba) has sparked intense debate among Shariah scholars. This study, therefore, aims to (1) map the operational mechanism of organized Tawarruq on BSAS, (2) evaluate its Shariah compliance, (3) assess its effectiveness in meeting short-term liquidity needs, and (4) propose actionable recommendations for strengthening Shariah governance and regulatory oversight in Malaysia. Adopting a qualitative approach, we draw on secondary sources and semi-structured interviews with Islamic finance experts at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Our findings reveal that organized Tawarruq is widely and rapidly adopted yet remains controversial: some jurists condemn it as a legal stratagem masking riba, while others regard it as a necessary innovation in the absence of viable alternatives. Operational issues—such as commodity availability, delivery timelines, and customer awareness further affect its real-world application. We conclude by calling for clearer contract terms, enhanced e-certificate controls on BSAS, and targeted education initiatives for practitioners and customers. These measures will help reconcile liquidity-management imperatives with rigorous Shariah compliance, advancing both the ethical integrity and practical effectiveness of Islamic financial instruments

Muslim higher education system and institutions in Uganda

Since the inaugural World Conference on Muslim Education in Makkah (1977), significant recommendations have been made to reform Muslim education systems, particularly through the Islamization of knowledge. As a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Uganda was expected to adopt these reforms within its Islamic institutions of higher learning. This study evaluates the extent to which such institutions in Uganda have implemented the Islamization of knowledge and integrated it into their academic curricula. Employing a systematic seven-step review methodology, the research analyzed publicly available curricular data submitted to the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) and compared program offerings from recognized Islamic institutions in Uganda. Findings reveal that only three institutions—Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Islamic Call University College (ICUC), and Al-Mustafa Islamic College (AIC)—are formally recognized. IUIU is fully registered, while ICUC and AIC hold provisional status. Of the 104 programs offered by IUIU and 25 by AIC, none demonstrate substantial incorporation of Naql (revealed knowledge) alongside Aql (acquired knowledge). The curricula predominantly reflect secular frameworks, with limited visibility of Islamic epistemological integration as envisioned by the 1977 Makkah Conference. This study concludes that the Islamization of knowledge in Uganda’s Islamic higher education institutions remains underdeveloped. The current curriculum reform trajectory falls short of achieving the comprehensive objectives of Islamic education, underscoring the need for a more balanced integration of Qur’anic principles, rational inquiry, and empirical sciences to meet the holistic educational needs of Muslim learners

Linking demand drivers and Al- Mizan for green houses in Malaysia: a proposed model

    No full text
This study develops a conceptual model to understand the demand drivers for greenhouses in Malaysia. The model examines economic motivations, environmental awareness, sociopsychological factors, and Al- Mizan values as key determinants influencing the willingness to purchase greenhouses. Economic motivations are analysed through purchasing power and perceived private benefits. Environmental awareness, rooted in Islamic environmental stewardship, highlights the moral obligation to protect natural resources. Socio-psychological factors, including the sense of honor and trend perception, are explored to understand their impact on consumer behavior. Al Mizan value is proposed as a moderating variable, significantly influencing green purchase intentions. The study suggests that integrating Al- Mizan endorsements, financial incentives, and public education campaigns can effectively promote green housing adoption. The findings provide a comprehensive framework for understanding green consumer behavior in Malaysia and offer policy implications for promoting sustainable housing practices while promoting Islamic values and outlook related to environment in order to combat climate change and other threats to the planet
