Tracing Malay traditional villages in the Mukim of Setapak from socio-cultural and historical lenses
At present, there exist unique hybrid cultural practices and traditions among the locals that are interestingly evident in their daily socio-economic activities, especially among those who reside in several traditional villages in the mukim of Setapak (district of Gombak). A quick glance at them reveals that these practices, strictly speaking, are quite unique to pure local Malay practices and traditions. A preliminary study further revealed that many of these villagers are originally from Indonesia and belong to different ethnicities and clans. They migrated from the Indonesian islands and found their way to Selangor, eventually coexisting with the local Malays.
This preliminary paper employs a historical research method to investigate how the locality gradually becomes a melting pot of diverse socio-cultural traditions practised by its people. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the diversity results from the arrival of Malays from different clans of the Indonesian islands, who were driven by socio-political and economic factors and eventually assimilated with local practices in the area
Non-maleficence in medical confidentiality: a Maqaṣid-based review
Although the concept of harm elimination is embodied in half of the discussions in Islamic jurisprudence, there is a clear lack of specialized and systematic studies on the different types of harm (ḍarar) from the perspective of five essentials (ḍarūriyyāt) of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (objectives of Islamic law). Based on this, the research conducts a comprehensive study of what is known as the principle of non-maleficence in medical ethics, followed by founding the concept and its explanation in the Qur’an, the hadiths, and jurisprudential texts.
Employing a deductive, analytical, and evaluative approach, this study classifies harm based on the five essentials of maqāṣid: the preservation of religion, life, family, intellect, and wealth. As the harm could appear in all these fundamental essentials, when a healthcare professional violates patient confidentiality, so that is the aspect has been detailed in this study. Furthermore, this study clarifies the conflicting views between individual rights and public rights regarding the practice of healthcare
Ordeals of a July uprising warrior ‘protesters are not given medical care here’
On July 15, 2024, Sokal took to the streets with her friends. When their procession came to Dhaka University's VC Chattor (square), Chhatra League hooligans and hired miscreants swooped down on it and started attacking protesters with iron rods, machetes, hockey sticks, and other weapons. One thug hit Sokal very hard and wedged a dent on her head. She fell on the ground and remained unconscious for the next two and a half hours of which she has no memory at all. She was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH)
Integrating values in economics: challenges and prospects
This paper builds the case for a values-driven framework in economics. Religion is the most historic and significant institution in human society shaping people’s worldview and preferences while also providing rules and norms in individual and collective life. Religious institutions also affect markets and transfers beyond markets through redistribution. Mainstream economics can incorporate religion as institution to look at the impact on aggregate outcomes. However, mainstream economics is not robust in defining religion or religiosity as a dynamic state of being, i.e. a continuous variable. It only takes religion as a representation of identity as a dichotomous variable. Mainstream economics can incorporate analysis of economic behaviour concerning religious products which are traded in the market. Nonetheless, mainstream economics is inappropriate in analysis of allocation of economic resources beyond markets where the motive transcends self-interest. The implication for Islamic economics is to assimilate mainstream economics tools and framework only after critical filtering and modifications and leave it in situations where it contradicts and falls short in embracing the revealed knowledg
Psychometric evaluation of the reminiscence functions scale in the Malay language for older adults
The Reminiscence Functions Scale (RFS) is a commonly used survey instrument to assess
psychological well-being among older adults. The study aims to examine the validity and reliability
of the RFS in the Malay language. The RFS was back-translated into the Malay language by two
independent linguistic experts, and modified by two clinical psychologists. Principal Axis Factoring
examined the factor structure of the translated scale. Convergent validity was determined by
correlating the scale with the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Cronbach’s alpha determined the
internal consistency reliability. A total of 173 older adults (mean age = 69.3, SD = 6.64) participated.
After the deletion of items with problematic communality and item loading values, a final 17-
item scale was tested. Principal axis factoring extracted four factors explaining 66.9% of the total
variance. The Cronbach’s alpha for the scale score was excellent (0.907), and good for its subscales
(Factor 1 = 0.885, Factor 2 = 0.877, Factor 3 = 0.836, and Factor 4 = 0.793). The Malay RFS
and its subscales significantly correlated with satisfaction with life, except the Bitterness Revival
subscale. The results suggest that a 17-item Malay RFS with a four-factor solution has acceptable
psychometric properties
Flow analysis around Kuching Barrage by field measurement and Large Eddy Simulation turbulence model using 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics
This study investigates the hydrodynamic complexity of turbulent flow conditions near the Kuching Barrage in the Sarawak River using field measurements and 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations FLOW-3D. Upstream and downstream of the barrage, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were used to collect field data, which was then incorporated into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model to simulate the hydrodynamic properties. Riverbed surveys and sediment sampling enabled the model's implementation. The results showed good agreement between the modeled and measured data, providing evidence of the simulation's accuracy. It was demonstrated in the study that 3D modeling is essential for resolving complex dynamics associated with flow, which cannot be adequately addressed by conventional 1D or 2D methods. To improve the validity of future studies, future measurements should be prioritized, and finer computational grids should be more implemented
Anomaly detection in quadcopter flight: harnessing frequency domain analysis and barnacle mating optimization
Ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) requires effective fault detection and identification (FDI). Traditional multi-stage FDI methods, particularly those using residual detection layers, increase complexity and computational cost, limiting real-time applications. This study proposes a single-stage anomaly detection framework integrating barnacle mating optimization (BMO) with discrete cosine transform (DCT) for UAV fault detection. While prior research explored model-based and data-driven FDI, bio-inspired optimization techniques remain underexplored in frequency-domain analysis. This study develops a BMO-based fitness function analyzing 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonic peaks to detect UAV anomalies. Software-in-the-Loop (SITL) simulations validate the method, achieving a 5-second optimal frame size, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.05, and root mean square error (RMSE) of 195.52. The findings confirm that a single-stage detection framework via optimization method and frequency domain analysis is possible, making it viable for real-time UAV applications. This study bridges the gap in bio-inspired UAV fault detection, paving the way for safer and more efficient UAV operation
The current status of intentional replantation: a narrative review
Intentional replantation which has been practiced since the 1940s has evolved from its initial position as a final course of treatment to a viable alternative for managing failed root canal treatment. This review provides an overview of the current status of intentional replantation, clinical considerations prior to intentional replantation procedure, treatment outcomes and to explore future direction in this field. A literature search was conducted via Google Scholar using the search terms ‘tooth reimplantation’ and ‘intentional replantation’, and PubMed using the search terms ‘tooth reimplantation AND endodontics’, and ‘intentional replantation’ AND endodontics’ for English language publications from January 2000 to December 2024. Additional relevant articles were identified through manual review of reference list from selected publications. Findings from this review indicate that favourable treatment outcomes can be achieved depending on several critical factors such as the access and understanding of current intentional replantation protocols, meticulous preoperative assessments, careful case selection criteria, adherence to established extra-oral manipulation time limitations during the procedure, and implementation of atraumatic tooth extraction techniques to prevent root damag
Pengkategorian lakuan pertuturan ekspresif dalam novel Ayahanda
Lakuan pertuturan ekspresif merujuk kepada tindakan berbahasa yang digunakan oleh penutur untuk mengungkapkan perasaan, emosi atau keadaan psikologi penutur terhadap sesuatu situasi. Lakuan ini mencerminkan reaksi penutur, sama ada berbentuk kegembiraan, kesedihan, kemarahan, rasa kesal atau penghargaan yang secara langsung menggambarkan sikap atau pandangan penutur terhadap keadaan tertentu. Oleh hal yang demikian, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkategorikan lakuan pertuturan ekspresif yang terdapat dalam novel Ayahanda karya Azizi Haji Abdullah dengan merujuk kepada Teori Lakuan Pertuturan yang dikemukakan oleh Searle dan Daniel Vanderveken (1985). Penyelidik menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan mengaplikasikan kaedah kepustakaan sebagai strategi utama. Data yang dikumpulkan melibatkan petikan-petikan dialog watak yang mengandungi elemen lakuan ekspresif. Hasil kajian menunjukkan sembilan jenis lakuan ekspresif dikenal pasti iaitu kesal, meratapi, protes, memohon maaf, mengadu, mengucapkan terima kasih, bermegah, memuji dan mengucapkan tahniah. Kajian ini menggambarkan emosi watak, serta mencerminkan nilai budaya, dinamika hubungan kekeluargaan dan konflik sosial. Kesimpulannya, kajian ini memberikan sumbangan signifikan kepada pemahaman tentang penggunaan bahasa sebagai medium untuk menyampaikan emosi dan budaya dalam teks sastera Melayu, sekali gus membuka ruang untuk kajian lanjut tentang hubungan antara bahasa, emosi dan sastera
Deciphering the bioactive potential of four Malaysian Litsea species for antioxidant, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities
This study evaluates the antioxidant, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities of methanolic leaf extracts from four Litsea species (L. glauca, L. fulva, L. rubicunda, and L. tomentosa), highlighting their potential as natural therapeutic agents. The antioxidant activity was assessed using the β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching assay, DPPH radical scavenging assay, and total phenolic content (TPC) determination. Among the species, L. glauca exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with an 85.2% inhibition of β-carotene bleaching, a DPPH IC50 value of 126.2 µg/mL, and the highest TPC of 130.1 mg GA·g-1, demonstrating a strong correlation between phenolic content and antioxidant efficacy. Antifungal activity was evaluated against Candida albicans, Candida lusitanae, and Candida auris, with L. tomentosa showing the strongest activity, achieving MIC and MFC values as low as 62.5 µg/mL against C. albicans. Antibiofilm activity was also notable, particularly for L. tomentosa and L. rubicunda, which significantly inhibited biofilm formation in C. lusitanae (70.0% and 65.5%, respectively) and C. auris (67.2% and 65.8%, respectively). These findings underscore the potential of Litsea species as sources of bioactive compounds for medicinal and industrial applications, warranting further research to isolate active constituents, elucidate mechanisms of action,
and validate efficacy in vivo
