    The chapter explores the convergence of Islamic finance and climate change by analysing how Islamic financial institutions can effectively manage climate-related risks through ethical investment practices. It aims to highlight innovative financial instruments and strategies that promote sustainable development, and assess their role in funding climate change mitigation and adaptation projects. The findings conclude the significant role of Islamic finance in combating climate change and the integration of ethical principles aligned with sustainable development objectives, alongside the deployment of innovative Shariah-compliant financial products, such as green Sukuk. The findings also reveal how customized risk management strategies are employed to consider environmental consequences

    Development of screen printed force sensing resistor for measuring bite force

    Accurately measuring bite force is critical in dentistry, as it provides valuable insights for diagnosing dental conditions, planning orthodontic treatments, and designing durable prosthetics. While commercial Force Sensing Resistors (FSR) are widely used, they often lack the precision, adaptability, and personalized fit required for measuring bite force in diverse dental applications. Custom-made FSRs address these limitations by offering tailored designs that conform to the unique shapes and sizes of individual teeth, allowing for multiple active sensing areas and enhanced sensitivity. This research explores the development of a screen-printed Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) tailored for measuring dental bite force. The motivation stems from the need for accurate and flexible sensors to enhance the measurement of bite force in dental applications. The primary objectives are to design an optimized FSR, fabricate it using screen printing, and evaluate its performance parameters. Methodology involves an extensive literature review, design modeling using SolidWorks, finite element simulation analysis, and fabrication through screen printing on flexible substrates. Initial simulations indicate promising results in optimizing the sensor's sensitivity and resistive range. Simulation results show optimum design of Design 3 (width of 0.9mm) with lowest resistance due to highest contact width that create additional conductive pathways. Measurement results shows Design 6 (0.75 mm width with 4 active areas) yields the highest sensitivity 0.096 1/N with sensing range of 0 – 20N compared to other design. The project concludes with comprehensive groundwork for FSR fabrication, paving the way for practical testing and validation in subsequent phases to advance dental diagnostic tools

    Price discovery and time-varying causality dynamics in energy markets: futures versus ETFs

    This paper investigates price discovery and time-varying causality between energy futures and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) across three major markets: WTI crude oil, natural gas, and gasoline. Drawing on a unique dataset spanning almost two decades, the analysis employs rolling Information Leadership Share (ILS) measures with Monte Carlo simulation bands and recursive time-varying Granger causality (TVGC) tests to trace the evolution of leadership dynamics between ETFs and their underlying assets. The results provide novel empirical evidence that futures generally dominate price discovery under stable market conditions, reflecting their superior liquidity and informational efficiency. In contrast, ETFs assume a more prominent role during episodes of market turbulence, such as the 2014-2016 oil price collapse and the COVID-19 crisis, where they shift from being passive followers to active price setters. Bidirectional, time-varying causality emerges in the WTI–USO and natural gas–UNG pairs, particularly during crisis periods, whereas gasoline markets exhibit a more conventional futures-led process. The study contributes to applied computational economics by illustrating how simulation-based and recursive estimation methods can uncover dynamic leadership patterns in financial markets. It further advances the understanding of financialisation in commodity markets, offering insights into how ETFs reshape information transmission during periods of heightened uncertainty

    Embracing ethical consumption: integrating Islamic values and minimalism for sustainable lifestyles

    This chapter explores the intersection of the conventional economic framework of consumption, the Islamic perspective on consumption, and the emergence of minimalism as a concept in consumer behavior. It highlights the significance of integrating Islamic principles of moderation (qasd) and contentment (qanā’ah) into the contemporary discourse on consumption. Drawing from Qur’anic verses and interpretations by Islamic scholars, the chapter demonstrates how these principles can foster mindful consumption with a minimalistic ideology, encouraging individuals to find fulfillment through simpler and more sustainable ways of living. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the urgent need for extended research, both qualitative and quantitative, to validate the impact of incorporating concepts like qanā’ah in shaping sustainable consumer behaviors and lifestyles. Ultimately, this study contributes to advancing the understanding of how ethical consumption, influenced by Islamic values and minimalism, can lead to a more harmonious relationship between individuals, society, and the environment

    Incorporating restorative justice in dealing with matrimonial offences in the syariah courts of Malaysia

    Criminal justice system as exercised in Malaysia today is retributive in nature which considers punishment as an acceptable response to crime. It neglects its role to create self-consciousness on accountability towards the damage that has been done. On the contrary, restorative justice is a diversion of a traditional criminal justice system which aims to restore whatever has been affected by the aggrieved parties caused by the crime. Since restorative justice benefits the accused, the aggrieved party and the community, recently, restorative justice has been recognized by the United Nation as part of criminal justice system. In fact, it has long existed in Islam as provided in the Qur’an and Sunnah of the Prophet s.a.w. where in certain criminal cases, the parties involved are encouraged to resolve cases among themselves instead of referring to the authority. In Malaysia, restorative justice has not been recognized formally in the criminal justice system even in dealing with offences relating to matrimony.The objective of this paper is to address the issues relating to matrimonial offences and to provide suggestions as to how these questions could be answered.This paper adopts doctrinal research by analyzing legal provisions and cases related to matrimonial offences from the Malaysian law and Islamic perspectives. The research is mainly library-based research. From the study, it can be concluded that the criminal jurisdiction of Syariah courts of Malaysia is limited. The punishments provided for in Islamic Family Law Enactments and the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment of the States are retributive in nature which are to punish the offender proportionate to the harm caused. Therefore, the criminal justice system should be responsive and receptive to both parties, i.e. the offender and the aggrieved party. It is proposed that the authorities concerned revise the current criminal justice system to incorporate restorative justice to resolve issues relating to matrimonial offences

    Digital learning's toll: a high prevalence of computer vision syndrome in university students during lockdown

    Background: Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) encompasses a range of ocular and musculoskeletal symptoms, such as dry eyes, eye strain, blurred vision, neck pain, and light sensitivity, resulting from prolonged digital device use. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the shift to online learning increased screen exposure, potentially exacerbating CVS among university students. This study aimed to assess the CVS prevalence, and its associated Internal Symptoms Factors (ISF) and External Symptoms Factors (ESF) among students at UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, during the pandemic-induced lockdown. Method: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted using the Computer Vision Symptoms Scale 17 (CVSS17) questionnaire. Results: Among 150 participants (mean age 21.36 ± 1.87 years; 99 females, 51 males), the mean CVSS17 score was 34 ± 10.61, with ESF and ISF scores of 24 ± 7.07 and 15 ± 4.95, respectively. A high prevalence of CVS was observed, with 80.67% reporting moderate to severe symptoms. Specifically, 56.67% experienced moderate to severe ESF, while 83.33% reported moderate to high ISF. Female students exhibited significantly higher CVSS17, ESF, and ISF scores compared to males (p<0.01). Conclusion: The findings indicate a substantial prevalence of CVS among students during the lockdown, driven predominantly by internal symptom factors. These results highlight the need for preventive measures to mitigate CVS in digital learning environments

    Case reports of middle ear muscular spasms presenting as tinnitus

    Background: Middle ear myoclonus (MEM) is an uncommon disorder characterised by involuntary spasms of the middle ear muscles, often manifesting as objective or pulsatile tinnitus. There are currently no standardised diagnosis or treatment methods, which may result in a chronic impairment in patients' quality of life despite intervention. This study seeks to characterize cases of MEM presented at a tertiary care clinic, with a focus on the diagnostic and management approaches employed. Methods: Two clinical cases of MEM were identified from the tinnitus clinic at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, SASMEC @IIUM. Cases were included if they involved patients who had been diagnosed with MEM-induced tinnitus and provided information on diagnostic processes and methods of treatment. Results: Two cases of MEM with either objective or subjective tinnitus were presented. Otoscopy and tympanometry were normal across cases, but differences emerged in the use of otoacoustic emissions (OAE), stapedial reflex testing, and pure tone audiometry for assessment. Some cases also utilized imaging to exclude other possible causes. Management strategies ranged from reassurance and pharmacological therapy to surgical tendon sectioning. The SASMEC@IIUM cases favoured conservative approaches: mainly reassurance, counselling, and ongoing monitoring, compared to the more invasive interventions reported in other institutions. Conclusion: The observed variability in the diagnosis and management of MEM underscores the lack of standardized clinical guidelines. To facilitate the development of evidencebased protocols, further research involving larger sample sizes and appropriately matched control groups is essential. Such efforts are likely to enhance diagnostic consistency and improve treatment outcomes for patients with MEM-induced tinnitus

    An exploratory corpus study of Malay word structures in school-aged children

    Introduction: Corpus-based research plays an essential role in understanding language structures relevant to education and clinical practice. This study provides an initial exploration of Malay word structures in school-aged children, focusing on grapheme-phoneme correspondences, syllable patterns, and inflectional morphemes. The findings aim to support linguistic research and inform speech-language pathology interventions. Methods: A descriptive analysis was conducted on a paediatric Malay corpus comprising the 1,000 most frequent words used by school-aged children. The words were analysed in terms of grapheme-phoneme relationships, syllable structures, and inflectional morphemes. Data were summarised descriptively. Results: The majority of words demonstrated direct grapheme-phoneme correspondence. Disyllabic words (50%) and CV syllable structures were the most frequent patterns identified (47%). Inflectional analysis revealed that root words (65%) predominated, with relatively fewer affixed or reduplicated forms. Conclusion: This preliminary study highlights key features of Malay word structures in school-aged children, confirming the language’s transparent orthography and prevalence of simple syllabic forms. These findings provide a foundation for future research and have potential applications in educational resources and speech-language pathology, particularly in developing assessment and intervention tools

    ESL students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of corpus linguistics tools in developing academic vocabulary proficiency

    Academic Vocabulary is not as easy as it sounds, and English as a Second Language (ESL) students often struggle to use the appropriate vocabulary in a specific domain due to several factors. One of the methods for overcoming this problem is by applying the corpus-based approach in vocabulary learning. Thus, this study was conducted to identify ESL students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of a corpus tool (SKELL) in developing their Academic Vocabulary proficiency. Five participants were interviewed to identify their perceptions of using SKELL in their classroom, and a thematic analysis was conducted on the data. The findings showed that the participants have a positive perception of using SKELL because it provides very clear examples, makes it easy to identify formal and informal patterns through SKELL’s collocation, expands their vocabulary, and have a straightforward and user-friendly interface
