    University students and excessive screen time: links to sleep disturbance and acute health issues

    Background: University students often spend a significant amount of time on screens due to academic demands, entertainment and social interactions. However, excessive screen time may negatively affect sleep quality and contribute to deterioration in health. This study aimed to determine the association between sleep disturbance and acute health effects associated with prolonged screen time among students at a higher education institution. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students at a public university in Kuantan, Pahang. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to eligible participants who owned personal screen-based devices and had sufficient English proficiency to understand the questionnaire. Students who were on study leave and had been diagnosed with insomnia and pre-existing eye disorders that are known not to be caused by excessive screen usage were excluded. Screen device addiction was measured using the Manolis/Roberts Cell-Phone Addiction Scale (MRCPAS), while sleep behaviour was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: With 155 participants, the findings indicate that the majority preferred using smartphones primarily for educational and entertainment purposes, with an average daily screen time of 7.32 hours. The mean addiction score to the screen device was 12.81 out of 20, indicating a high level of screen device dependency. Despite this, the majority (97.4%) reported good sleep quality. Participants reported several acute health effects due to prolonged screen time, including eye strain, musculoskeletal discomfort (e.g. back pain, neck pain), headaches, and a decline in physical fitness. Chi-square analysis revealed significant associations between sleep disturbance and dry eyes (p=0.022), blurred vision (p=0.023), burning eyes sensation (p=0.048), double vision (p=0.014), difficulty focusing for near vision (p=0.012), feeling that eyesight is worsening (p=0.029), and back pain (p=0.028). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that sleep disturbance had significant associations with several acute health effects caused by prolonged screen time. The results obtained in this study may not accurately reflect the general university student population, as the sample size was limited; however, they may serve as a helpful starting point for larger epidemiological studies

    Full hand pose recognition and clinical assessment under dexterous articulation in activities of daily living for tele-rehabilitation: a review

    The rehabilitation of individuals who have suffered a stroke primarily relies on physical therapy directed towards enhancing the affected limb capabilities and mitigating lasting disability. Clinical assessment of a stroke patient is a critical step in determining the appropriate treatment and management of the patient’s condition. The clinical assessment also helps to determine the severity of the stroke which can affect the patient’s prognosis and the type of care that is needed. The dilemma with current clinical assessment in rehabilitation is that they are subjective and rely heavily on therapist’s experience, which leads to inconsistency and do not directly quantify patients’ ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). In this context, hand pose recognition and recovery estimation present significant academic and technical challenges due to complex structure and dexterous movement of human hands. This paper thoroughly examines the current research status of hand pose recognition and hand recovery estimation when performing ADL tasks, focusing on various types of hardware deployed for data collection. It carefully analyzes the advantages and drawbacks of hardware technologies and reviews the performances of different machine learning algorithms deployed. Furthermore, the clinical assessment tools were categories into four groups based on the evaluation methods. The current clinical assessments tools deployed in studies and utilized in stroke rehabilitation were reviewed. The summary of the existing research limitation and initiates a discussion on future research are provided

    Green innovation and renewable energy sources policies: a systematic and integrative review

    Research on green innovation and renewable energy sources (GIRES) has gained momentum due to severe global climate change. GIRES has become a global strategy for decentralised energy systems that employ various technologies and practices to lessen environmental impact as an alternative to traditional methods. The purpose of this study is to review the literature on GIRES policy to provide a comprehensive overview and develop insights into the state of this research field. Based on the PRISMA framework, a systematic literature review was conducted to analyse the empirical papers published in WOS and Scopus databases. A comprehensive content analysis includes a review of 64 articles to identify the key issues in GIRES policies using thematic analysis. This review explored the diversity of GIRES research on policy and evaluated it regarding publication trends, influential authors, regional focus, theoretical base, and thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the content analysis of the 64 articles identified for inclusion: policy driver, implementation strategy, outcome, and contextual factors. The review observed that GIRES policies have significantly enhanced enterprises’ technological innovation capacities, and the successful execution of the GIRES transition depends on integrating strategies and comprehensive plans. This study addressed the importance of integrating various strategies and regulations, such as environmental policy and Green Infrastructure (GI) initiatives, to consolidate the entire renewable energy (RE) sector

    The sustainability imperative: evaluating the effect of ESG on corporate financial performance before and after the pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped corporate financial stability, emphasizing the role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance in enhancing resilience and value creation. This study investigates the relationship between ESG factors and corporate financial performance, measured by Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and Tobin’s Q, among firms listed on the Indonesia Syariah Stock Index (ISSI) and the Borsa Malaysia Shariah Index. Utilizing panel regression analysis, the study examines how ESG components influenced firm performance before and after the pandemic while controlling for macroeconomic and industry-specific factors. The dataset, retrieved from the Refinitiv database, covers the period from 2010 to 2022, offering a long-term perspective on ESG-financial linkages. The findings reveal a dynamic shift in ESG impact over time. Prior to the pandemic, social (S) and governance (G) factors positively influenced profitability and market valuation, while environmental (E) scores were largely insignificant. However, post-pandemic, the effect of social factors turned negative, governance influence weakened, and ESG integration exhibited a weak but positive correlation with operational efficiency. Additionally, macroeconomic variables such as GDP growth and industry munificence played an increasingly significant role in shaping firm value, underscoring the evolving economic determinants of ESG relevance. These findings suggest that the financial impact of ESG is context-dependent and subject to macroeconomic shifts. The study underscores the need for adaptive ESG strategies that align with financial sustainability objectives, providing crucial insights for corporate managers, investors, and policymakers navigating post-pandemic economic uncertaintie

    Nutritional and functional characterization of Malaysian banana flours (pisang berangan and pisang nangka) and their application in high-fiber biscuit development

    Background: Banana flour from unripe bananas is a promising functional ingredient due to its distinctive nutritional composition and bioactive compounds. This study evaluated the nutritional and functional potential of banana flour from two Malaysian varieties, Musa acuminata(Pisang Berangan) and Musa paradisiaca(Pisang Nangka), with emphasis on their use in value-added bakery products. Methods:Unripe bananas were processed into flour by freeze-drying, followed by proximate and functional property analyses.Biscuits were formulated using Pisang Berangan flour (100%, 50% banana–wheat, and 50% banana–rice blends) for sensory evaluation, while both Pisang Berangan and Pisang Nangka flours were analyzed for nutritional composition and physicochemical properties.A sensory evaluation was conducted among 30 randomly selected undergraduate students from IIUM Kuantan to assess three biscuit formulations (banana flour, banana–wheat flour, and banana–rice flour) for aroma, texture, color, flavor, and overall acceptability using a 9-point hedonic scale (1 = dislike extremely; 9 = like extremely). Samples were coded with two-digit numbers, and participants ranked their preferences and provided additional feedback.Results:Pisang Beranganflour contained significantly higher (p 90%), with Pisang Berangan exhibiting higher starch (92.06%) and amylose (67.71%) compared to Pisang Nangka (88.74% and 59.83%, respectively), indicating stronger thickening and stabilizing potential. Sensory evaluation showed that the 50% banana flour–wheat flour formulation obtained the highest scores for flavor (6.93 ± 1.53), texture (6.87 ± 1.25), and overall acceptability (7.00 ± 1.53). In contrast, the 100% Pisang Berangan flour biscuits exhibited superior nutritional quality but were less preferred in terms of texture.Conclusion:Overall, a 50% replacement of wheat flour with Pisang Berangan flour provides the best compromise between texture, flavor, and nutrient density, highlighting its potential as a sustainable functional ingredient for the development of high-fiber bakery products.INTRODUCTIONBananas (Musaspp.) are among the world’s most important fruit crops, with global production exceeding 125 million tonnes annually, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions (FAO, 2023). In Malaysia, bananas are the second most widely cultivated fruit, yet their high perishability leads to substantial post-harvest losses estimated at 20–30% (FAO, 2023).     Validation of Malay version of the parents’ feelings and perceptions towards their child’s speech or language disorder (M-PFPSLD) questionnaire

    Background: There is a limited number of Malay versions of questionnaires that assess the parents’ feelings and perceptions towards their child diagnosed with a speech or language disorder. Hence, research on the validation of such a survey is necessary to expand the range of assessment and screening tools available in Malay for use within the Malay-speaking population. Objective: The aims of the current study are: to examine the content validity of the M-PFPSLD questionnaire; to investigate the face validity of the M-PFPSLD questionnaire; and to determine the appropriateness of the grammatical and sentence structures of the M-PFPSLD questionnaire. Methods: The M-PFPSLD questionnaire was validated using a cross-cultural adaptation and validation process that includes the process of 1) expert committee review; 2) face validation and pre-testing among parents with typically developing children; and 3) proofreading. Results: The item-level CVI (I-CVI) of 27 out of 28 items were 0.80 and above, which indicated the appropriateness of the items. For scale-level CVI (S-CVI), the average S-CVI (S-CVI/Ave) of the second version of the harmonised M-PFPSLD questionnaire (BM-H2) was 0.93, while the S-CVI universal agreement (S-CVI/UA) was 0.71. All 28 items in the BM-H2 version were acceptable with a 100% score of face validity index (FVI) based on its criteria of readability, feasibility, clarity of words, and layout and style. No changes were made after the proofreading process, thus indicating that the BM-H2 version was well-written, grammatical-error-free, and accurately expressed the intended meaning of the original context. Conclusion: This study concluded that the M-PFPSLD questionnaire has a good content validity index (CVI) and face validity index (FVI). Therefore, it shows that the findings may act as preliminary psychometric properties of the M-PFPSLD questionnaire, and future studies can further research the psychometric properties of the M-PFPSLD questionnaire, such as reliability, construct validity, convergent and divergent validity

    Integration of Naqliyah in contemporary health discourse: a review

    Introduction: Naqliyah ( ةيلقنلا ), or Islamic revealed knowledge from the Qur’an and Hadith, offers profound guidance on well-being, including concepts like hifz al-nafs (preservation of life) and ethical conduct of healthcare professionals. Currently, the literature on the systematic integration of Naqliyah in contemporary health issues has not been reviewed. Our aim was to investigate the existing literature discussing various methods of integrating the naqliyah approach, with a focus on disease management and patient treatment within the healthcare system. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA framework, which included three databases in the literature search: Scopus, PubMed, and Dimensions. The study synthesises past contributions, identifies prevailing themes, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks, and analyses the evolution of this interdisciplinary field. By mapping scholarly engagement, the review highlights gaps, particularly in systematic integration and policy alignment (e.g., with Malaysia’s MADANI Agenda), thus justifying the need for greater academic focus. Results: This review indicates a steady growth in scientific production in this field, with a marked increase in publications in the past five years. The thematic focus has expanded from general references to Quranic healing to more structured applications of Maqasid Syariah (objectives of Islamic law) in areas like mental health and pandemic response. Recent years show a methodological shift toward empirical studies and policy-oriented analyses, moving beyond theoretical discussions, with researchers increasingly employing interpretive models like Al-Nusus (ayatisation), Al-Muqaranah (comparative), Al-Takayyif (adaptation), and Al-Tafaqquh (internalisation), to apply a Naqliyah lens to health issues. Conclusion: The literature demonstrates a maturing body of knowledge that is increasingly integrating Islamic revealed sources with modern health sciences. The systematic integration of Islamic revealed knowledge offers a pathway toward holistic well-being and culturally resonant health solutions

    A systematic review on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among dental practitioners

    Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are one of the most common occupational health concerns world-wide. Numerous studies have reported a higher prevalence of MSDs affecting the upper and lower extremities among dental practitioners. These are frequently attributed to poor ergonomic postures, prolonged static position, gender predilection and increased working hours and workload. Materials and methods: This systematic review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis 2020 (PRISMA) guidelines. The articles were retrieved from four search engines: PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar. Results: 19 studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included. A high prevalence of MSDs (55%-96%) was found among dental practitioners worldwide. The most common affected body parts included the neck (26%-96%), shoulder (20%-90%), upper back (21%-82%) and lower back (21%-80%). Risk factors associated with MSDs included awkward working posture, younger age with less experience, female predilection, increased working hours and high workload. Conclusion: Overall, this review highlights the significant burden that MSDs impose on dental practitioners. However, larger studies with higher response rates are warranted to generate more accurate and conclusive results. More importantly, dental education should emphasize the knowledge and application of ergonomics among dental students to promote the necessary awareness and practice in reducing the prevalence of MSDs
