A peek under the mask: exploring dental students’ experiences through focus group discussions
Introduction
Training individuals to become dental professionals involves addressing multiple challenges related to a student’s learning experience. This study aimed to identify the learning issues and stress factors affecting dental students at a premier dental school in Malaysia. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to gather qualitative insights into students’ experiences, highlighting common struggles across clinical training years.
Methods
Thirty clinical-year dental students (Years 3–5) participated in online FGDs. A combination of theoretical and homogeneous purposive sampling techniques was employed to ensure diverse yet comparable perspectives across academic levels. The discussions were guided by a validated topic framework designed to explore students’ learning needs, motivation, instructional strategies, curriculum content, learning environment, and academic performance. Thematic analysis informed by Braun and Clarke’s framework was employed to extract key themes. Triangulation of FGD transcripts, field notes, and digital engagement patterns was conducted by cross-referencing verbal themes with non-verbal cues (e.g., facial expressions, camera use), enhancing the depth and credibility of insights into students’ challenges and learning preferences.
Results
FGDs revealed shared challenges among all clinical-year students, including difficulties transitioning to clinical training, balancing academic and clinical responsibilities, and coping with performance-related stress. The triangulation analysis highlighted discrepancies between verbalized concerns and observed engagement patterns, revealing underlying anxiety, self-doubt, and cognitive fatigue. Students preferred structured guidance, interactive learning methods, and timely feedback. While confidence increased with clinical experience, assessment transparency and workload concerns remained prevalent. Preference for student-centred, experiential, and reflective learning strategies was common.
Discussion
FGDs provided distinct insights into the unique challenges faced by dental students, highlighting the need for a supportive and adaptive educational environment. They also emphasized the importance of student-centred learning (SCL), which incorporates experiential and reflective practices to enhance academic performance and well-being.
Conclusion
This study highlights the challenges faced by dental students including clinical transition difficulties, inconsistent feedback, assessment anxiety, and heavy workload, emphasizing the importance of academic support and tailor-made SCL strategies. Triangulated data revealed that unclear expectations and passive teaching further compounded stress. Addressing these through structured mentorship, active learning strategies, transparent assessments, and constructive feedback can enhance academic performance and support student well-bein
Tracing Digital Politeness in Ecotourism: A Scoping Review on Gaps, Ethical Dilemmas, and Future Communication Pathways in Malaysia
The rapid adoption of digital technologies in Malaysia’s tourism sector has transformed the delivery of ecotourism experiences. Tools such as mobile applications, virtual guides, and artificial intelligence systems are now widely used to engage visitors. However, this digital shift often prioritises efficiency and automation over culturally respectful communication. In ecotourism settings where local interaction, environmental awareness, and cultural sensitivity are essential, the neglect of ethical communication poses a significant challenge. This study explores how digital politeness and communication ethics are addressed in the Malaysian ecotourism context. This study conducted a scoping review of fifteen scholarly articles published between 2015 and 2024, employing the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework and the PRISMA-ScR checklist to examine patterns, gaps, and practices related to digital communication in tourism. The review reveals a dominant focus on system functionality and user convenience, with limited integration of local politeness norms and ethical values. Tools such as chatbots and mobile platforms often fail to reflect the communicative traditions of Malaysian communities. The study concludes that digital politeness must be repositioned as a core principle in tourism technology. It recommends the development of culturally grounded communication frameworks, stakeholder engagement in design processes, and the inclusion of ethical training in tourism education. These steps are essential for building respectful and sustainable ecotourism experiences in Malaysia

Nanoparticles as novel drug delivery systems for cancer treatment: current status and future perspectives
Cancer continues to pose a significant global health challenge, demanding innovative therapeutic approaches to overcome the limitations of conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising tools for cancer therapy due to their unique physicochemical properties that enable targeted drug delivery, reduced systemic toxicity, and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. This comprehensive review delves into the mechanisms of NP-based drug delivery, highlighting both passive and active targeting strategies. It categorizes and discusses diverse NP types, including polymeric, lipid-based, and metallic nanoparticles, emphasizing their applications in enhancing the bioavailability and specificity of anticancer
agents. This review also explores the integration of advanced technologies, such as theranostics and artificial
intelligence, to optimize NP design and functionality for personalized medicine. However, challenges remain,
including issues related to toxicity, drug resistance, and manufacturing scalability. Addressing these barriers re-
quires interdisciplinary research focused on developing stimuli-responsive NPs, improving biocompatibility,
and incorporating multimodal therapeutic platforms. Although substantial progress has been made, this review
is limited by the paucity of clinical trials validating NP efficacy and safety in diverse patient populations. Fu-
ture endeavors should prioritize translational research to bridge the gap between preclinical innovations and
clinical applications, ensuring that these transformative technologies benefit a broader spectrum of cancer pa-
tients. The review underscores the immense potential of NPs in redefining cancer treatment while advocating
for sustained research to address existing limitations and unlock their full therapeutic promise
Optimization of post-processing parameters for enhanced characterization in metal extrusion 3D printing of copper-polymer composites
The high costs associated with metal additive manufacturing methods including
expensive feedstock, energy-intensive lasers, and controlled environments have
limited their widespread adoption in industries like aerospace and automotive,
despite powder bed fusion success in producing intricate and high-precision
components. As a cost-effective alternative, material extrusion 3D printing enables
the fabrication of metal-polymer composites using simpler equipment. However,
challenges remain in optimizing post-processing parameters to enhance mechanical
performance and microstructural integrity. This study focuses on improving the
post-processing of copper-filled PLA parts fabricated with an Artillery Sidewinder X1
material extrusion printer. A Taguchi design of experiments approach using an L8
orthogonal array was employed to investigate the effects of debinding time, sintering
time, and layer thickness. Results showed that shorter debinding compromised
structural integrity in 25% of samples, while optimized settings achieved a 30.59%
shrinkage and a 12.5% hardness increase. These findings highlight the significance of
proper thermal post-processing in controlling dimensional changes and improving
part quality
