Evaluating SHIFT: a game-based learning application for teaching the afterlife in Islamic education

    No full text
This is a pilot study that examines the effect of SHIFT (Stairway to Heaven in Islamic Faith), a game-based learning application, on university students’ conceptual understanding of the afterlife, a core component of Islamic faith taught in Islamic Education (ISED). Belief in the hereafter is a fundamental concept in Islam but it is often conveyed through conventional instructional approaches that provide limited opportunities for active engagement and deep understanding. SHIFT was developed to address this gap by presenting the stages of life after death—from worldly life (dunia) to judgment and the hereafter—through interactive multimedia and formative questions aimed to instill students’ understanding of the afterlife. The study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 25 male undergraduate students from Year 1 to Year 4 at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Students’ conceptual understanding of the afterlife was measured using a 10-item self-developed open-ended test, with scoring reliability established through inter-rater correlation. Data were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test. Results revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ conceptual understanding following the intervention, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.73). These findings provide preliminary evidence that game-based learning applications such as SHIFT can effectively support the teaching of abstract and profound concepts in Islamic Education at the university leve

Design and experimental study of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) spring as actuators in wrist exoskeleton

    No full text
This paper presents the design, modeling, and experimental assessment of a wrist exoskeleton actuated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) springs to support flexion-extension and radial-ulnar deviation of the wrist. A dynamic model based on the Euler-Lagrange formulation was developed and simulated to estimate the joint torque requirements, which ranged from 0.26–0.32 Nm for standard wrist movements. A prototype is fabricated and tested incorporating four SMA spring actuators fixed on an arm splint, with targeted actuation for generating different wrist motion. Experimental findings revealed that the prototype delivered torque values surpassing simulation requirements for flexion (0.332 Nm) and extension (0.328 Nm) motions, whereas lower torque was observed for radial and ulnar deviations, likely due to actuator placement and frictional losses. The actuation cycle frequency for flexion-extension was measured to be 0.018 Hz, primarily constrained by the thermal characteristics of the SMA springs. Another important observation is enhanced speed during SMA reversal motion (from extension to flexion) resulted from antagonistic actuation of the SMA. To further improve the torque and speed generation, an optimal SMA actuator with reduced thermal mass (thinner diameter, bundle configuration) and active cooling can be designed. Overall, the SMA-driven wrist exoskeleton exhibits promising potential as a lightweight, wearable system for effective wrist joint assistance

Purpose The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, it aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the activities and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) government suppliers involved in government green procurement (GGP). Second, it examines the differences in the impact of COVID-19 between small and medium-sized groups. Design/methodology/approach The study used a questionnaire survey that was distributed to SMEs listed in the MyHIJAU directory that supply green goods and services to the government. Of the total 394 sample respondents, 126 usable questionnaires were received, representing a usable response rate of 31.98%. Descriptive analysis of mean score, standard deviation and mean score ranking was used to analyse the overall results. A t-test analysis was carried out to examine the differences between the small and medium-sized groups of companies. Findings The study discovers that the SME government suppliers involved in GGP were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The top ranked impacts are that “the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened health and safety practices among the employees”, “the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced company’s turnover”, “the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the company to implement a cost reduction strategy”, “the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the company’s ability to deliver work, supplies or services to the government” and “the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the company to incur higher production costs for green products or services provided”. However, there is no significant difference between the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the small and medium-sized group of enterprises. Originality/value The present study is among the fewer studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular focus on SME government suppliers involved in GG

This study explores the features of social life as envisioned by Said Nursi, highlighting the pressing challenges of disorder and disunity that threaten contemporary societies. It advances a central objective: the establishment of a safe and stable social order through the implementation of five fundamental principles—mutual respect, compassion and mercy, abstention from the unlawful, preservation of security, and the rejection of chaos and anarchy through adherence to lawful obedience. Employing an inductive and analytical methodology, the study examines these principles in light of Risale-i Nur, which, over the course of two decades, succeeded in producing hundreds of thousands of individuals who served both society and the state without causing harm, thereby affirming the effectiveness of these principles. The study concludes with two key findings: first, that these five principles constitute the cornerstone of national security and societal stability; and second, that belief in the Hereafter serves as the ultimate foundation of both social and individual life, ensuring human happiness and perfection. The study recommends the revival and practical application of these principles in modern contexts—educationally and socially—so as to foster civil peace, strengthen trust among members of society, and cultivate virtuous citizens who contribute to the unity and advancement of the Muslim ummah

The practices of cronyism generate considerable unrest and inequity, undermining societal stability, a phenomenon often linked to mismanagement and inadequate or poor governance. This research examined the contributions of the Madani government in diminishing the Malaysian Corruption Index by implementing effective governance for its populace, hypothesising that by 2028, it will rank among the 25 least corrupt nations. Consequently, this study aimed to assess the statutory agents mandated to combat corruption in Malaysia on behalf of the Madani government. The degree of corruption exhibited a notable change from 2022 to 2025. A thorough examination of the Transparency International databases spanning from 2015 to 2024 was conducted to produce descriptive statistics aimed at assessing the present scale of initiatives undertaken by the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) and NACS (National Anti-Corruption Strategy) in combating corruption in Malaysia. Analysing the nation with the lowest score in juxtaposition with the highest-ranked CPI. Evaluating in relation to SDG 16 and its associated global indicators, the findings have been presented in tabular form. The results demonstrate that the statutory institutions tasked with combating corruption on behalf of the Madani government have consistently attained three points in their role since the present government assumed leadership of Malaysia. In summation, the Madani administration and its anti-corruption operatives must enhance their efforts to meet the self-imposed benchmark of 10 points by the year 202

Under the background of tourism development, the quality of many architectural heritages gradually deteriorated. The historical atmosphere and traditional culture of original place are increasingly losting. It makes unique memory of residents disappear, and also makes the satisfaction of tourists decline. Finally, the tension between people and place is caused. To solve this problem, place theory on the relationship between people and place is constantly evolving, which can help people to establish and enhance sense of place. However, researches on sense of place are distinctive in different disciplines. Therefore, based on WOS and CNKI databases, this study reviews some key researches on sense of place by systematic literature review from concept discrimination, dimension division, generation process and influencing factors. And a theoretical framework is finally given to understand sense of place in the context of architectural heritage. The research significance is to guide to enhance sense of place in architectural heritage

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of modern family life, offering both opportunities and challenges. This paper explores the dual impact of AI on families, highlighting its potential benefits while addressing associated concerns. AI enhances convenience through virtual assistants, smart home security, and au- tomation, reducing household burdens and improving daily efficiency. Educational AI applications provide personalized learning, while health-monitoring technolo- gies contribute to family well-being. Additionally, AI-driven financial management tools and communication platforms facilitate budgeting and global connectivity, fostering better work-life balance and strengthening familial bonds. Despite these advantages, AI presents significant challenges that families must navigate. Future research should focus on developing ethical frameworks and policies to ensure AI supports, rather than disrupts, the dynamics of family life

Mimicking man, reaching God? The plausibility of Superintelligent AI in the light of Islamic thought

    No full text
The concepts of AI (Artificial Intelligence), AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), Superintelligence, and the Singularity can be analysed in the light of Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic philosophy, where the focus is on the creation, purpose, and limitations of human and non-human entities. The progress in AI technologies raises important questions about creation, purpose, and morality in an Islamic context. Is it possible for machines to mimic the abilities of man’s intellect, wisdom (hikmah), natural disposition (fitrah), and belief system? Mimicking is an imitation game for computers, which need the ability to understand languages, solve problems, make decisions, predict futures, innovate ideas, invent products, and ultimately think, feel, and aspire just like human beings. But the speculation of progress in AI goes far beyond the mimicking capabilities of human beings. The transition from Generative AI to God-like AI and Cosmic AI seems to be reaching toward the power of God. How does Islam conceive this progression in the light of Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy, and Sufism? Its plausibility, and the necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve the stages of this progress, need to be articulated. The door to this discussion must be open to understand the goals and to determine their plausibility in achieving them. Misunderstanding in this issue might lead to shirk , which refers to associating partners with Allah or attributing divine qualities to anything besides Him
