Attitudes of preschool teachers towards teaching science and their relationship with attitudes toward gender roles

One of the main goals of the present-day preschool teachers is to encourage children to discover, experiment and research in a rich environment for the purpose of developing a scientific way of thinking. However, for years PISA tests in the field of science and mathematics are in favor of boys. The observed difference may be the consequence of the various contextual influences present from the earliest age. The attitudes of preschool teachers about children gender roles can be related to attitudes about scientific activities as traditional "male" activities reserved for boys. The aim of this study was to investigate attitudes of preschool teachers about teaching science, as well as to establish correlations with general data and attitudes about children gender roles. 481 preschool teachers between the ages of 23 and 64 with an average of 14 years of work experience participated in On-line survey. Their attitudes were studied by the Child Rearing Sex- Roles Attitudes Scale and Dimensions of Attitude Toward Science. Also, general and demographic data were collected. The results show that attitudes towards teaching science are not related to their age or experience, but to their importance of religion. Furthermore, preschool teachers who have more traditional attitudes towards gender roles experience more anxiety and less comfort when demonstrating scientific activity, perceive less self-efficiency in teaching, are more dependent on contextual factors (e.g., the existence of science teaching materials) and experience more difficulty in teaching. Practical implications and recommendations for future research are addressed in this paper

Generic and Narrative and Structures of Croatian Queer Fiction

    No full text
Josipa Eugena Tomića, neobjavljene dnevnike Naste Rojc i prozu u trapericama upozoravajući na važnost regionalnoga konteksta i prevratne povijesne događaje. Stalni motivi i povratak širega shvaćanja pojma „queer“ u nedavno objavljenoj hrvatskoj queer prozi sugeriraju da korištenje queer teorije prilikom čitanja onemogućuje shvaćanje povijesti književnosti kao urednoga izmjenjivanja epoha s njihovim reprezentativnim autorima/cama, žanrovima i djelima.“Generic and Narrative and Structures of Croatian Queer Fiction” Although the meaning of the “queer” concept is contestable even in its original, Anglo-Saxon context, sexuality remains at the core of queer theory, the methodological approach I relied on to discuss genre and narrative features of Croatian queer fiction. This thesis comprises an overview of texts (mostly short stories and novels) which explicitly deal with essentially gay and lesbian issues. In my thesis, analysing Croatian queer fiction is taken as both an epistemological and a political project. Even before its contemporary period, i.e. after the first Gay Pride in Zagreb (2002), Croatian queer fiction held a special interest in temporal and spatial realities, particularly in challenging those categories. An apparent gender difference can be discerened within it – while gay literature (Ilinčić, Marić) centres around adventures and travels of the individual, in lesbian literature it is private spaces and love couples that stand strong (Verde, Žmak). Coming-of-age stories and novels (Duhaček, Stojsavljević, Verde) are not as genderdifferentiated but instead – just like their counterparts – mostly take up storylines of coming out (articulating of the queer identity in public), leaving home and trying to make it big abroad. New thematic horizons are evident in Poderana koljena (2018), a novel by Dino Pešut where queer comes to represents various types of gender-, class- and ethnicity-dependent social marginalization. It is not the first time, however, that such a specific approach where queer is not equated with sexual and national minorities could be felt. It had appeared somewhat earlier, with Nataša Bodrožić, Gordan Bosanac and Zvonimir Dobrović, editors of the Poqureene priče (2004) story collection, which was published at the very beginnings of the budding contemporary Croatian queer literature and where queer was viewed as essentially irreducible to the issue of sexual orientation. My thesis does not cover contemporary fiction exclusively, but includes even earlier examples of Croatian queer literature, i.e. Udovica (1891) by Josip Eugen Tomić, the unpublished diaries of Nasta Rojc, and the so-called “blue jeans fiction”. All the while the context of the region, together with its tumultuous history, was taken into account. Given the recurring motifs, as well as a return to a wider understanding of the notion of „queer“ in recent Croatian queer fiction, this might be suggest that relying on queer theory upon reading precludes history of literature from being conceived as an orderly sequence of epochs, with their representative authors, genres and works

Uloga prevoditelja i strategije kulturne prilagodbe u paratekstovima Zabavne biblioteke

Ever since the publishing of Gérard Genette’s Seuils (1987), translation studies have seen numerous studies that aim to use paratexts as a means of obtaining additional culturally relevant information and of deepening one’s understanding of a given text. This paper aims to provide an overview of Genette’s theory and its relevance for translation studies, as well as point to certain theoretical inconsistencies that influenced the way paratexts are approached from the perspective of translation studies. This is followed by an overview of Zabavna biblioteka, a local publishing project undertaken by Nikola Andrić in the early 20th century, within which a large number of literary works originally written in English were translated and published. An analysis of the works’ paratextual material (titles, forewords, illustrations and photographs) is conducted with the aim to gain an insight into adaptation strategies, cultural portrayals and the role of the translator. The goal is to understand the role of the translator in shaping and delivering the publisher’s programmatic principles, and thus to point to a broader cultural significance translation activities had, both within this particular project and in the formation of modern Croatian readershipOtkad je Gérard Genette objavio svoje djelo Seuils (1987.), u znanosti o prevođenju pojavile su se brojne studije koje koriste paratekstove kako bi došle do dodatnih kulturno-relevantnih informacija te produbile razumijevanje tekstova.

Images of Minority Women in the Contemporary American Ethnic Literature

    No full text
Ethnic women in the United States are locked out for both being women and being of color. Both racism and sexism are very strong in the United States, and ethnic women are in quite a few respects at the bottom of American social ladder. More often than not they are deprived of basic human rights, or are given lesser opportunities than white women, or ethnic men. Their salaries are lower, their living conditions are worse, and to top it all, they are prejudiced against, racialized and sexualized on daily basis. They are treated as less then equal members of American society. Ethnic women are a huge group in America, therefore their problem is the U.S.’s problem, and should definitely be focused on. In order to address the issue, it was necessary to introduce several important concepts at the beginning: those were the concepts of whiteness; race, otherness, and ethnicity; and, finally, feminism, especially that of color. Also, three works of fiction are used to illustrate this thesis: Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, Mohja Khaf’s The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah. The main characters have been analyzed from the perspective of being ethnic women in American society. An emphasis is put on how they found their sense of belonging; how they made peace with the dominant culture; to what extent they assimilated, and how they managed to accomplish the task of blending in; how their bodies were racialized; and why it was important for them to appear whiter; and, in the end, why those three protagonists are so special, and what makes them stand out in their respective ethnic groups. It is shown that the images of ethnic women in American literature have centered around certain identifiable tropes and have consistently charted both the persistence of stereotypes and the notions of change

Communication model of mobile library services in the academic libraries

Mobile devices have brought a distinct mobility in space and thus influenced the behavior and users expectations who want to get the information at any time and place. Libraries have recognized the importance of the global trend of ubiquitous mobile devices and began to adapt them to meet the needs of mobile users so in the second decade of the 21st century the majority of libraries provide mobile adjusted resources and services. Given that students are at the forefront of mobile devices accepting and using, this research includes student population at the University of Zagreb in order to explore information interaction between users and librarians and to develop a communication model of information exchange in the mobile environment. In addition faculty members and librarians are included as they are link between students and information sources. Taking into account mobile trend, this thesis deals with the influence and changes that the mobile environment brings to communication between librarians and users in the form of academic mobile library resources and services. In the first chapter Development, expansion and use of mobile devices the terminological ambiguities in the Croatian language related to the appearance of mobile devices and trends in the context of libraries have been clarified. Given the widespread use of mobile phones and smartphones, their development, expansion and factors of mobile devices using are shown. Theoretical framework chapter provides a theoretical framework with a review of the theoretical directions and perspectives of computer mediated communication, information behavioral models and information-communication competences and skills that are essential part of the communication model of mobile library services in academic libraries. The chapter Mobile devices and libraries describes the application of mobile devices in education, the educational role of librarians in academic libraries and the experience of users and librarians with mobile library resources and services that have shown the user's interest in accessing all library resources and services through mobile devices as well as librarian readiness to adapt to such user requirements. In the chapter Mobile library resources and services mobile web pages, library applications, mobile catalogues, academic databases, text messages, social networks and media, new technologies and services were presented as they are important for mobile users and they are included in the communication model of mobile library services in the academic libraries. In the chapter Research on using mobile library resources and services in academic libraries the aim and hypotheses of research, methodology and the results of the research were presented and interpreted. Research has showed that mobile devices are not accepted as a communication channel for the transfer of library information between academic librarians at the University of Zagreb and their users and that academic libraries did not adapt their communication regarding using their resources through mobile devices. Librarians as well as their users are not educated enough to use the new ways of communication by mobile devices and, although they in general possess sufficient knowledge and information-communication competences and skills, there is a need for additional education of librarians on mobile library resources and services as well as the need of users for librarians to educate them in this regard. The proposed communication model of information exchange in the mobile environment presumes the academic library as a sender of information ie. mobile library resources and services which mobile devices channel to the information recipient/user, and the same channel is used for the feedback. The key communication component of the model is education as an activity by which the information sender/library is directed towards the user in order to adopt and improve the information-communication competences and skills needed to manage the mobile environment and to apply those skills (creation and content sharing, security and privacy protection, device synchronization and „cloud” usage, finding applications), to the use of mobile library resources and services. In the closing chapter, scientific contribution, general conclusions and thoughts on Croatian academic libraries mobile resources and services were presented

    The spacioception and verbotonal theory

Vid, sluh, propriocepcija, opip i vestibularno osjetilo osjetila su spaciocepcijskog sustava, kojiomogućuje živom biću doživljavanje prostora, njegovo svladavanje, društvenu i kulturnu izgradnju i opstanak vrste. The perception of space or spacioception is a complex sensation that is generated on the basis of the data that comes from the periphery of various senses to the Central nervous system. Sight, hearing, proprioception, touch and vestibular senserepresent sensations of the spacioception system, that allow the living being to experience space, overcome it, create social and cultural construction and survival of the species.Considering the neurophysiology of the sensory space system is essential to understanding the integrity of communication.Within the space perception system, apart from the spatial conceptions, spatial speech and spatial thinking are created because the speech is anisomorph of reality. Thus, a grammar of space emerges, representing the correspondence and analogy between the world and the human being, that is, the sentence of the situation and the verbal sentence. Since the verbotonal system focuses on the individual (subject in the communication process) and on his/herreal possibilities, the rehabilitation of listening and speaking is also closely related to spacioception.Multisensory is one of the fundamental principles of the verbotonal theory and the rehabilitation bythe verbotonal method.Although emphasis is put on the development of all senses and the somatosensory rehabilitation, it should be noticed that vestibular sensitivity represents the spacioception integration

Idioms with a component from the semantic field of food and drink in Turkish and Croatian language

Idioms with a component from the semantic field of food and drink in Turkish and Croatian language The goal of this master's thesis is to analyze Turkish and Croatian idioms with a lexical element from the semantic field of food and drink as its component. Since food and drink are a crucial part of everyday life, they also find their place in the phraseological fund of different languages, including Turkish and Croatian. We compared the idioms with lexemes referring to concrete gastronomic elements and food, as well as the ones which describe a person’s relation towards food and drink. A contrastive analysis showed that the majority of Turkish idioms and proverbs do not have their equivalent in the Croatian language and that semantically compatible examples do not have the same lexical composition or syntactic structure. The analysis also suggests that a certain number of Turkish and Croatian idioms and proverbs have two or more variants, which proves the phraseological and paremiological richness of these languages

Focusing on popular culture and youth as its audience and exploring the impact these two phenomena have left on the global character and intellectual history of the twentieth century, this paper enters into dialogue with the existing literature and primary sources in order to employ an analysis of youth magazines published in Croatia as a way of making a contribution to research focused on Yugoslav culture formed in the post-war period not only by mapping a previously unexplored area, but also by emphasizing the extraordinary significance of the field of the popular and the figure of youth for the broader issue of the Yugoslav socialist project. Through an analysis of a number of theoretical reflections on Yugoslav popular culture and youth, this paper underlines the key symbolic importance of the figure of youth as the subject expected to carry out the Yugoslav socialist project and it demonstrates how this figure came to function as the privileged space for the negotiation of the tensions that mark the relationship between the Yugoslav vision of modernity and the developing field of the popular. Through an analysis of the primary sources and a consideration of the changes that occur in the broader economic, political and socio-cultural context, this paper identifies the period between 1958 and 1976 as constitutive for the development of the Yugoslav field of the popular and demonstrates how this field – which, in this period, becomes marked by a number of distinctions that drastically alter the image of the “set of generally available artefacts” and produce a privileged audience of popular culture, which is urban, middle-class, masculine and additionally marked by national distinctions – becomes more similar to its Western counterpart than it is typically assumed, which allows us to examine the issue of the “exceptionality” of Yugoslav popular culture in a new light

Prevođenje kao posredovanje između jezika i kultura

This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from three texts were translated from English into Croatian (Adam Kay’s This Is Going to Hurt Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor, The Translation of Children's Literature: A Reader edited by Gillian Lathey, and Christopher Mellinger and Thomas Hanson's Quantitative Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies), and two from Croatian into English (Antoni Cetnarowicz’s Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) and Sven Popović’s Uvjerljivo drugi). The discussion focused on the notion of translation as linguistic and cultural mediation and its aim was threefold. Firstly, it provided an overview of the theoretical notion of translation as a form of mediation and reflected on both its historical and contemporary application in the field of translations studies. Secondly, it explored the analytical potential of the notion of translation as cultural mediation through an analysis of several texts belonging to different genres and requiring translation either from English into Croatian or vice versa. Finally, it examined the implications of this notion for the future of the translation profession by mapping the consequences of its application beyond the academic field of translation studies. S engleskoga na hrvatski jezik prevedeni su ulomci triju tekstova (This Is Going to Hurt Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor Adama Kaya, The Translation of Children's Literature: A Reader urednice Gillian Lathey i Quantitative Research Methods in Translation and Interpreting Studies Christophera Mellingera i Thomasa Hansona), dok su s hrvatskoga na engleski jezik prevedeni ulomci dvaju tekstova (Narodni preporod u Istri (1860–1907) Antonija Cetnarowicza i Uvjerljivo drugi Svena Popovića).
