9-2.8 AB v. 2
Illustration No. 53: This aerial view of the terrain over which troops of the 164th Infantry had to fight, shows one of the roads built by the 57th Combat Engineers. The ruggedness of the terrain seems to defy anyone to build roads, but the engineers performed their almost impossible task and built roads which made it possible to bring up supplies, as well as to transport guns like the 155mm howitzer to positions from which they could closely support the infantry. MS #P-060f. Small unit tactics: tactics of individual arms. Part III: small German armored units in Russia. Volume II, March 1953, number 11.
Whereas parts I and II of this series dealt almost exclusively with examples of the employment of tanks on the Russian side, this third and last part contains examples of their use by the Germans. This study contains five examples which illustrate that the Russian methods of conducting operations and the peculiarities of the Russian theater of war influenced the methods of the German panzer troops. Having been written by an eyewitness of the fighting, the examples give a vivid account of how the German armored engineer company overcame this particular enemy, and how it was able to surmount the most difficult combat conditions because of its organization, equipment, and command. Chapters include: operations of the 3d Company, 59th Armored Engineer Battalion; Russian infantry attack with armor support; and tank attack from a moving column
