From the introduction, p. 9: Eighth Army planning for participation in the Leyte Operation commenced several months before A-Day. General Headquarters Warning Instructions No. 5, which directed the Eighth Army to be prepared to relieve the Sixth Army in the Visayan Area at a date to be designated later by General Headquarters was issued on August 31, 1944. This was the first formal directive covering the participation of the Eighth Army in the Philippine Campaign.
