From author: Previous reports have covered my observations as a Member of the War Department Observers Board during the period Feb. 1 to June 1, 1944. During this time the Board tried to obtain from the 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions, the 2nd Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne Division such lessons as their experience in the Mediterranean Theatres dictated. We also reported on the activities in ETO of American and British Troops in the "build up" for the invasion. Report of Signal Division, Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, in Operation 'Overlord', volume vi, from: 8 February 1945 to: 7 May 1945.
This volume is the report of Signal Division in the final phase of 'Overlord' and covers the period from 8 February 1945 to 7 May 1945 when the Germans surrendered unconditionally at Reims. During these three months the German military power was completely crushed by Allied forces in the West and the Russian Armies in the East. Upon the formal surrender of the Germans, Operation 'Overlord' was terminated and Operation 'Eclipse' came into being. A brief summary of military operations in this period is contained in the next chapter, and the overall activity of Signal Division throughout the period is discussed in each succeeding chapter

This final section of the report of Signal Division, Supreme HQ, AEF, covers the 'Eclipse' period from 8 May 1945 until the termination of the Combined Command and Supreme HQ AEF, on 14 July 1945. In these closing weeks of its existence the Signal Division devoted its principal efforts to planning and preparing an organizational structure able to maintain essential communication services under the system of multipartite government about to be set up in place of Combined Command
Standard artillery & ammunition against reinforced concrete pillboxes. Second progress report, 15 February 1944.
Detailed information concerning the use of artillery weapons and the proper ammunition for attacking heavy reinforced concrete structures was given in the First Progress Report from this office dated 5 January 1944. The report called attention to the fact that H.E. ammunition must not be used for this purpose, as no appreciable effects against sturdy concrete fortifications could be expected. It further stated that S.A.P., A.P. and A.P.C. ammunition would give good results against such fortifications. Data were also included as to the number of rounds required to defeat reinforced concrete structures of stated thicknesses. Additional intensive firings have been conducted by the Ordnance Department against such heavy reinforced concrete structures. In the course of these firings an important discovery was made. It was found that by using a special steel fuze, into which were introduced standard fuze components, in combination with standard H.E. ammunition, a superior type of concrete penetrating shell resulted. This is an important development, in that by supplying these special steel heads all calibers of H.E. shell, with modified booster, become effective concrete piercing ammunition. The results of firing against concrete with this new type of ammunition are given in this report
Employment of fighters on strategic bombing missions.
The purpose of this lecture is to give an insight into the role played by fighter escort on strategic bombing missions. It should be pointed out, at the outset, that strategic missions, as opposed to tactical work necessitate long flights deep into enemy territory. There are two types of escort employed. The first we call static. By this we mean one particular group of fighters escort the bombers throughout the entire mission. On the on the other hand, relay escort is a number of groups of fighters; each taking over the protection of the bombers successively. A typical relay escort mission so carried out by the 15th Air Force in Italy will be used later in the discussion as an illustration
