History of the Mountain Training Center. Army Ground Forces study no. 24.

    No full text
The training of mountain troops was from the very outset in 1940 a project requiring the combined efforts of the Army and representatives of the National Ski Association. Best results were possible when the prerogatives of Army command were subordinated to the superior knowledge and skills of the mountaineering experts who had come into the Army from civilian life, and when at the same time the experts subordinated their enthusiasm for their specialties to Army discipline. That such rapprochement could be and was in some instances achieved is evident from the official documents and from this study. But there are also unmistakable indications that in some areas of the Mountain Training Center command, conflict in purposes instead of cooperation prevailed. This conflict is in the official records, and any impartial study of the Mountain Training Center's activities will reveal it. Since the Mountain Training Center had failed to comply with the Army Ground Forces directive that an account of its activities be submitted, this history was originally written without the advantage of access to such an account. The original study was prepared after the Mountain Training Center had been discontinued. It could not meet the requirement that the studies of subordinate commands represent the points of view of their commanders. It, therefore, reflected the point of view of the author, Major John C. Jay, who was solely responsible for the statements made and the opinions expressed. Major Jay's active participation in the events recorded gave the study value in that it reflected the point of view of an important element in the command, namely, the soldiers who in civilian life had been experts in mountaineering and skiing and who had been brought in by the War Department because of their special knowledge and skills

In the early part of February 1945, Sixth Army units were pushing south from the Lingayen Gulf to effect the early capture of the Port of Manila. The XIV Corps was driving into the city from the north and east while the I Corps was securing the Army's northeast flank against stubborn enemy resistance. South of Manila, the 11th Airborne Division, following its swift advance from Nagsugbu Bay and Tagaytag Ridge, was driving the Japanese from strong positions in the Nichols Field Area. The XI Corps, which had landed north of Subic Bay, had pushed east and south, seized Olongapo, and was now driving east across the Zig-Zag Pass to cut off the Bataan Peninsula. This operation represents one of the most difficult ever, carried out by paratroops, but its complete and overwhelming success fully justified the risks incurred. Contents: Corregidor; combat hints from Europe; the Trojan horse; know your Japanese; assault and reduction of cave positions; Japanese artillery in defense of highway #5; and artillery in reduction of Intramuros
