Leyte historical report of the 24th Infantry Division landing team, 20 October 1944 - 25 December 1944, Philippine liberation campaign.

    No full text
The Leyte operation which opened the long awaited campaign for the liberation of the Philippines, is now concluded. The 24th Infantry Division felt signally honored in being selected to participate in this significant historic event. From a strictly military point of view, by reason of the diverse problems it presented, it gave promise of also proving epic. And it provided the opportunity for our division, one of the two combat divisions present at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day of 7 December 1941 to "square accounts" with the Japanese Sixteenth Division, the so-called "Tiger" Division, infamous for its mistreatment of Filipino and American prisoners-of-war in the tragic "death" march from Bataan. From Pearl Harbor, the Division had come a long way to make the fight. Through the long months of a tactical defensive mission on Oahu; accelerated training in Australia; staging at Goodenough Island and then participating in the "warming up" operation at Tanahmerah Bay the Division readied itself. And when we hit "Red Beach" on the eastern shores of Leyte at "H" hour, "A" day or 1000 on 20 October 1944, the officers and men of the 24th were technically well trained, physically fit and psychologically prepared for the battle

Reconnaissance in a tactical air command: an account of operations of 10th Photo Group, Reconnaissance, under XIX Tactical Air Command, of Ninth Air Force, in conjunction with Third US Army's 1944 campaign in France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

    No full text
The story of reconnaissance under the XIX Tactical Air Command of Ninth Air Force is essentially the story of this Command's comrade-at-arms, the Third US Army, for which a large proportion of the missions were flown, and of the 10th Photo Group, Rcn, which flew them. It is also a concrete case history of the development and functioning of reconnaissance as a tactical instrument in the air and land warfare of the Western Front, under both mobile and relatively static conditions. Although reconnaissance operations and procedures in general have followed lines laid down long ago, many important lessons have been learned and new techniques evolved under battle conditions. To make such lessons widely available, this report has been prepared
