Small Unit Pattern Analysis (SUPA) was a study of the intelligence and operational actions and reactions of Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) ground combat and Viet Cong (VC) small units in the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). The study was approved by MACV as a preliminary investigation conducted with in-country resources to determine the feasibility and potential methods to be employed for subsequent studies of small unit combat activities. The general purpose was to identify, measure, and compare those aspects of combat activity habitually performed that might provide clues to probable subsequent action. The specific purpose of the SUPA evaluation has been to determine, from analysis of ARVN after-action reports and questionnaires addressed to US advisors, whether patterns could be recognized which might have significant bearing on the outcome of ARVN operations
