The back of the card reads, "Remember when you could still get a cup of coffee for a nickel? The year was 1974 and the Dixie Grande Hotel made way for a new building in downtown Bradenton. Old fashioned quality service with just plain straight answers. Bill Stufflebeam, Realtor. Office (941)794-8200. Pager (941) 569-9038."Hotel Dixie Grande was constructed in 1925 on the corner of 13th Street and 6th Avenue West. It was owned by the Southland Corporation, comprised of a group of local businessmen, and was intended to be called Southland Hotel. However, toward the end of construction the hotel was contracted to be run as the second of a small chain of Griner Hotels which were to all include the word Dixie, thus causing the name to be changed to Hotel Dixie Grande. Prior to its opening, J.W. Fieldhouse purchased a majority stake in the hotel from the Southland Corporation. The hotel opened in April 1926. It had 175 rooms throughout 8 stories and cost $900,000 to build. Fieldhouse's daughter Annetta Causey, became the hotel's manager in 1934 and in 1936 bought out the minority stakeholders in the hotel. She owned and managed the hotel until her death in 1970. The hotel was demolished in August of 1974 and First City Federal Savings and Loan was built in its place. Today this location is home to Sunz Insurance.
