    Washington Avenue Looking North

    Washington Avenue was named after President George Washington. This was the main business district for Newport News for many decades. The first street car line in Newport News was built along this avenue. To the left can be seen the Rexall Store located at 2601 Washington Avenue. The store's proprietor was A.E.G. Klor. To the right is the Exchange Hotel. This is the building with the United States Flag flying. This hotel was located at 2601 Washington Avenue. the proprietor of the Exchange Hotel at this time was John Viney

    Boat Harbor

    The Small Boat Harbor was established in 1915. The property was annexed by the City of Newport News in January of 1917. It was designed to house 500 small boats. This harbor measured 2400 feet in length and 300 feet in width, seventy-five acres of land in total

The major camps were Camps Hill, Alexander and Stuart. In the background is the Warwick Hotel which was built in 1882 by the Old Dominion Land Company as a place for business travelers to stay

    The Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company began on January 28, 1886 as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Company. Collis P. Huntington started this business. During World War I the following ships were built for the U.S. Navy: The Battleship Mississippi, The Destroyers, Lamberton, Radford, Montgomery and Breese, 3 large naval towing targets and ten commercial vessels

    This was the main business district in Newport News for many decades. Many shops, banks and churches were located along this Avenue and its side streets. In the foreground to the right can be seen the Olympic Theater which was built in 1911. The Theater's address was 3100 Washington Avenue. The officers of the ownership group were W.F. Call, President, A.D. Jones, Vice-President and E.T. Crall Secretary-Treasurer. Further down the street on the right is James Hughes and Sons sellers of cigars, tobacco, soft drinks, magazines and newspapers. This store was located at 3602 Washington Avenue
