Diary kept by U. S. Marine Corps officer Lt. Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. during World War I, who served with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. Keeping a diary was forbidden, but Shepherd decided to record events during overseas training and leave it behind when sent to the front line. Entries date from August 29, 1917-March 11, 1918. Entries cover voyage to France, training; they end when Shepherd's unit was ordered to the front. He discusses caring for his classmate Thomas Jefferson, who was mortally wounded in the battle
