"Historical Sketch of the Establishment and Organization of the Virginia Military Institute. Prepared at the request of the Board of VIsitors, by Col. J. T. L. Preston, Professor Emeritus, V. M. I. July 4, 1889". It was prepared at the request of the VMI Board of Visitors to mark Institute's Semicentennial celebration. Preston had planned to deliver this as an address, but he was not able to do so and it was read by his son Rev. Dr. T. L. Preston
