Derastus Myers Civil War Letter, 1863
One letter, dated May 11, 1863, from Confederate soldier Derastus E.W. Myers to his brother and sister. The letter was written from "Camp Near Hamilton's Crossing" after the Battle of Chancellorsville; topics include death of Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Myers served as a Sergeant with the 33rd Virginia Infantry Regiment
Junius L. Hempstead collection, 1865
The collection consists of two items. One letter (September 2, 1865) from Hempstead to Major DeWitt C. Craun in which he defends the position taken by the South during the Civil War & his own service in the CSA. One manuscript poem, "Ode to the 4th Classmen of 1861 who never heard Auld Lang Syne" (undated)
Robert A. Boyd Diary - Notebook
One volume notebook, ca. 45 pages, containing miscellaneous personal notes (Dec. 1864-April 1865) and brief diary entries (January 1; April 3-13, 1865). Diary portion covers activities of the 1st Engineers Regiment during the last few days of the war; mentions surrender at Appomattox and includes pencil sketch of surrender site. Notes concern supplies, furloughs and desertions, guard rosters; also maxims and quotations from books
Benjamin Bowering Collection, 1916
Collection consists of the original manuscript score of the VMI Spirit (the official song of the Virginia Military Institute), written by Benjamin Bowering while he was as Assistant Professor at VMI in 1916. The manuscript is 10.5" x 12.5", with composition in pencil and annotations by the composer. The collection also includes on typescript letter (March 16, 1935) from Bowering to VMI's Librarian Nellie Gibbs, in which he explains the history of the song
