    Miscellaneous papers, 7 items, of John S. Bagnall, who fought at the Battle of New Market. Included are two letters (1921) from Eliza Clinedinst Crim, the New Market resident who came to the assistance of wounded cadets after the Battle of New Market; the letter of April 20 mentions Cadet Moses Ezekiel caring for the mortally wounded Cadet Thomas Jefferson. Also includes a VMI grade report (1862); two receipts for payment of tuition & diploma; and an envelope containing 2 of Bagnall's calling cards

    The collection consists of a one volume notebook-diary kept by Virginia Military Institute Cadet Charles T. Haigh in 1862- 1864. The volume provides insight into the life and concerns of a VMI cadet during the Civil War. It contains poetry written by his classmates, as well as by Sara Henderson Smith, the wife of VMI's Superintendent, Francis H. Smith - topics include cadet life and the war; cadet autographs; list of demerits and written excuses. The diary portion contains sparse entries for the period March-May 1863. Included are occasional references to wartime cadet life, as well as a brief account of General Stonewall Jackson's wounding, death, and funeral in May 1863. There is one brief entry written at Fayetteville, NC on March 23, 1864. VMI Order announcing death of Jackson appears on pages 49-53. Diary entries about death of Jackson appears on pages 97-100

Early letters describe life at the Virginia Military Institute (hazing, daily routine, excitement about secession, cadets as drillmasters) and in Lexington, Virginia, just prior to and during early months of the Civil War. Subsequent letters date from his service with the 11th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Company F, (Bath Squadron), including a letter written after the second Battle of Manassas (2nd Bull Run), Sept 1862.
