Joseph Hannah Carpenter Civil War Papers
These items comprise the Civil War era documents from the Joseph H. Carpenter Papers. They consist of correspondence (2 items) written by Carpenter, including letter of June 16, 1862 describing fighting near Port Republic, Virginia; letter of recommendation from BG John Echols to Jefferson Davis; two Commission documents, 1861; and one letter written by SGT Benjamin Karnes in 1864 (he served in Carpenter's Battery)

One letter (December 13, 1864) from Union soldier Capt. Benjamin F. Oakes of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery to J. G. Richardson. The letter was written from "in the field" near Petersburg, Virginia. Colonna, Civil Engineer and New Market cadet battle veteran, based on survey of the battlefield and correspondence with battle veterans. It was published in 1914.
