I live in the land of hope and just hearing the work of our alumni, how hopeful are we in the future? And Elon sets that journey by setting those values. … And I believe that is captured in the motto and our mission. How this mission lives on in our alums by doing good work with good people. Good people, doing good work – I am very proud. I am very proud of what you reflect. Also before I stop for tonight, I just want to say-I know that coming to Elon is a decision that families make for their son or daughter. And I know many times that decision comes at great sacrifice and so I am deeply touched by the words of our alumni about their families and friends that made this possible and set them on that journey. Thank you for believing in Elon, as well as your son or daughter. So our congratulations to each of you. I am very proud to see the plaque in Martin Alumni Center with the new names added. And I am certain that we will see you in the years ahead here at Elon. Thank you.”

    No full text
This video titled Homosexuality Comes Out of the Closet by Michael (Mike) Nelson was presented by the Liberal Arts Forum on November 19, 1997 in Whitley Auditorium. Mike Nelson, a University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill graduate, talked about the diversity of gay and lesbian individuals in the civil rights movement. 00:09:27 The traditional train came through Elon with the sound of the train whistle. 00:11:17 Nelson spoke of his political career in Carrboro, North Carolina. 00:19:08 Nelson talked about being a gay man in the military, specifically in the Persian Gulf War. 00:19:50 Research has shown that gay men learn different languages faster than straight men, said Nelson. The U.S. military kicked gay men out of the military, said Nelson. The anti-gay witch hunts depleted the armed forces and compromised our country’s security, said Nelson. Then the young men who served and were kicked out of the military forces were recruited back into service for the Persian Gulf War. These men were promised that the military was changing for the better. After the Persian Gulf War, these same men were tossed aside, said Nelson. Nelson stated, there are two problems here. First, our military leaders allowed national security to be compromised because of their own prejudices. That is serious. But there is another problem, these American Soldiers were promised fair treatment by the United States military in exchange for their service. And then they were just tossed aside after the war. Even after things like this, gay men and lesbian women have continued to join the military – even with Don’t Ask and Don’t Tell. Nelson raised the Gay Marriage vs. heterosexual couple issue. Nelson said that President William Jefferson Clinton (the 42 United States President) led gay issues to the forefront more than any other president. Even Native Americans had men do female tasks and even married men in their tribes, stated Nelson. America is beginning to accept various sexualities. 00:30:12 Nelson took questions

This video, titled Elon University’s Next Strategic Plan, was held in McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts on August 24, 2009. Leo M. Lambert, Elon’s President, presented the academic strategies for the future years. Lambert stated, strategic planning at Elon has allowed Elon to become a national model that has transformed itself … Elon’s strategic planning is more like an impressionist painting or a story with our major hopes and dreams. Our strategic plans are of living and evolving. Lambert reflected on past strategic plans that changed during the processes. Lambert stated, we are an academic community committed to human transformation. That we value freedom of thought. That we are a Liberal Arts University. We believe in active student engagement. We are dedicated to both teaching and scholarly accomplishments. We believe passionately in our students becoming global citizens. We know who we are. Elon has added to the contributions of the landscape in higher education that are important. The innovation of these contributions characterizes our work as a great institutional strength and of a great national interest. U.S. News and World Report named us as the school to watch two years in a row. The name for the Elon Strategic Plan is named Imagine Elon. There were two versions for the year 2020. 00:06:00 Lambert said, I see the Elon Strategic Plan into eight major themes (diversity; supporting faculty and staff; attaining the highest benchmarks for Elon’s academic programs; launching innovative pathways in undergraduate and graduate education; delivering on Elon’s promise as a best value university; engaging the next generation of alumni leaders and philanthropists; advancing excellence in Phoenix athletics; and further building our beautiful campus and creating a thriving, safe, and environmentally friendly university). Lambert spoke of building new living and learning communities and theme housing for juniors and seniors on campus with an addition of 1,600 beds. Lambert urged more private business within walking distance of Elon University. Lambert mentioned private businesses such as, more restaurants, cafes, a pharmacy, an ice cream shop, and other shops common in town. There will be Geo-Thermal Plans. Lambert asked the audience to pause and imagine Elon in the year of 2020. Elon will be a much more diverse place. 00:31:56 He said, imagine hosting a presidential debate in our new convocation center. Elon will have gained an international reputation as a place that teaches religious topics and teaches inter-faith understanding. Lambert said, we will expand our campus work ethic here…Admissions is everyone’s business and admissions and fundraising are everyone’s business. 00:33:03 We will have one of the most active alumni bodies in the nation. The Town of Elon will be a destination place in the area for recreation and fun. 00:33:18 And no one will ever ask the question, “Where is Elon?” This will happen because Elon and Elon University is destined for great things. We will turn vision into reality. Some names mentioned: Tim Pepples, Tom Hendricks, Wallace Chandler, and Nancy Midgette
