School of Law: New Student Convocation (2017)
This video, titled School of Law New Student Convocation, occurred in August 2017 in Whitley Auditorium. 00:00:23 The Rev. Janet Fuller, University Chaplain, provided the Invocation. Fuller joked around with the law students before she began her theme Challenge Invocation. 00:03:55 Ms. Townsend spoke representing the Class of 2018 as a third year Elon Law student. 00:10:16 Steven House, Provost, Executive Vice President, and Professor of Biology, spoke about faculty judicial cases. 00:31:37 New students of the Elon School of Law walked up on the stage and shook the Elon Dean’s hand, Luke Bierman, and received an acorn from House. Also on the stage were the words of the Elon Student Honor Code. The Class of 2019 was welcomed to Elon’s School of Law
New Student Convocation (2018)
This video, titled New and Transfer Student Convocation, occurred in January 2018 for new and transfer students entering Elon University. The event took place in Lakeside Dining. During the Elon Convocation, the Innovation was said by Peter Tremblay, Associate Chaplain for Catholic Life. 00:01:32 Joseph (Joe) Arthur, Executive Treasurer of the Student Government Association (SGA) welcomed the new students to Elon’s community. 00:06:10 Jon Dooley, Vice President for Student Life and Associate Professor of Education, welcomed the students to Elon. Dooley shared with the students Elon’s most cherished traditions. 00:15:50 Steven House, Provost, Executive Vice President, and Professor of Biology, brought greetings to the students who are beginning their academic journey and those students who started elsewhere (joining Elon’s academic community). House works with approximately 450 faculty members. “Faculty will challenge and mentor students,” stated House. 00:32:21 Dan (unknown last name) sang the Elon’s Alma Mater. 00:34:45 Dooley and House greeted and provided students with an acorn and a Honor Code coin. 00:41:18 Dooley stated, “This concludes our program. To each of you, students, we wish you all the best in your journey. We want to thank you for being here today. Thank you very much.”
Choosing a Commencement Speaker (2018)
This video, titled The 2018 Student Voices on the Elon Undergraduate Commencement Speaker, in May of 2018. Steven House, Provost, asked Dr. Connie Ledoux Book, President of Elon University, about who would be best as the Elon Commencement speaker. House stated, “We always get good ideas from the class about that.” President Book stated, “I would love to what they are saying.” The first student stated, “They would have to be intelligently brilliant and offer great insights into our future.” The second student stated, “We need a great speaker. Someone who can really engage the crowd.” The third speaker, “We want someone who knows Elon to its very core and LOVES our university.” The fourth speaker stated, “Of course, they have to look good in a cap and gown.” The fifth speaker stated, “Well there are bonus points for a speaker who can make that walk across campus without tripping on a brick.” President Book stated, “Well, I guess there is one obvious choice. Let’s check his schedule. I have heard it’s looking pretty clear after March 1st.” The video closed with a graphic that read, “2018 Undergraduate Commencement Speaker, President Emeritus Leo M. Lambert.
Elegant Elon, Through the Seasons (2017)
This video, titled Elegant Elon Through the Seasons, was produced by University Communications in 2017. The four seasons revealed a beautiful campus and its buildings during sunrise, sunset, and the changes of the times. Buildings that were seen included: the Young Commons with Belk Library and Inman Welcome Admissions Center in the background; The Inman Welcome Admissions Center’s Cupula with the sunrise through the window panes; Wallace Chandler Fountain on Chandler Plaza with the Ernest Koury, Sr., Business School; Lake Mary Nell with the Global Neighborhood; the Boney Terrance (fountain), on the side of Moseley Center; Fonville Fountain in Scott Plaza; the Phi Beta Phi Commons (in 2018 – The Lambert Academic Village); Belk Library; Moseley Center; Lakeside Dining; Global Neighborhood; Loy Center (Greek Housing); and the Athletic facilities. Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Commencement (2017)
This video, titled Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Commencement Ceremony, was held in McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts on December 9, 2017. The DPT ceremony at Elon University included a Welcome given by Steven D. House, Provost and Executive Vice President. President Lambert was thanked for his leadership, as this was his last DPT Commencement. Lambert shook hands with the faculty members. 00:11:39 The key address was given by Nancy Garnder. 00:31:14 Students awards were presented to the students. 00:46:39 President Lambert “Conferred to the graduation class the ‘degree of physical therapy’ which entitles you to all of the rights, privileges, and responsibilities pertaining thereto. Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards Banquet (2018)
This video, titled The 25th Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards, occurred in McKinnon Hall on April 28, 2018. Tyrone Jean, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity, asked the audience, “What is Black Excellence? Black Excellence is more than black girl magic or black boy joy. Although bodied in this space. Black Excellence is more than kinda forever. Although, surely it is a powerful thing.” 00:00:51 Jean crossed his arms and clicked his hands together. 00:00:56 “Black Excellence is young people achieving things that their ancestors only dreamed of. Black Excellence is Lumen Scholars, Phi Beta Kappa recipients, scholarship recipients, student leaders, and academic achievement. Black Excellence is senior leaders – working together to implement recommendations to enhance the experience of black faculty, staff, and students.” Jean continued to acknowledge the Elon personnel who are not recognized on campus. He spoke of the black housekeepers in the residence halls and academic spaces, who clean up after the students and make Elon a pristine home. He spoke of the Physical Plant employees who manicure the grounds at Elon. The Dining Hall staff who prepare the students meals and greet them with a warm smile that he stated. Jean spoke of the endless hours black faculty and staff worked to make everything perfect for Black Excellence. “Black Excellence is the Village that it took to get you to this point in your lives,” stated Jean. Brandon Bell worked on the Black Excellence planning of the Black Excellence Awards evening. 00:06:32 Kenneth Brown, 2018-2019 Student Government Association President (SGA). Brown received a lot of applause. Brown introduced President Connie Ledoux Book. “It is my pleasure to introduce the 9th Elon President, Connie Ledoux Book,” stated Brown. 00:09:23 Brown and Ledoux Book shook hands. 00:09:44 “Thank you, Kenneth, for that lovely introduction.” President Book spoke of her parents being share-croppers. President Book was one of 9 children in 11 years. She is number six of the nine children. Her dad joined the Air Force so he could go to school on the GI Bill. Her father taught math and physics. Her mom was a nurse. Her parents realized if their nine children were going to obtain college educations, her father had to advance his degree to a PhD. They had a family meeting and they picked Oregon. 00:11:24 President Book was six years old at the point in her life. President Book’s brother was six weeks old as they were moving to Oregon from Louisiana. In the car, driving out of the driveway her father said, “We are all going to school.” President Book stated, “I am very proud to be here to witness this come true.” President Book continued to speak about creating an idea, building the concept, and implementing the idea into practice as a liberating act. She spoke of a June 2015 shooting at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, while being at the Citadel College, as the first woman Provost. President Book continued that she had to be measured for her Citadel uniform by Miss Brown. She continued with what she learned during her uniform fitting with Miss Brown. President Book said that Miss Brown was her teacher. President Book stated, “She is committed for making (Elon) a college for the world. And I am very grateful that you believed in us. We have work to do this fall in the next strategic plan. It is very important that your voices are a part of that. That we can continued to make the improvements as an institution.” 00:38:55 Randy Williams gave out academic awards. 00:41:26 Steven House gave out engagement awards. Honored students, faculty and staff at this year's ceremony included the following: Elon Experiences Awards; Excellence in Internships Awardee - Victoria Parrish; Excellence in Leadership Awardee, Kellcee Batchelor; Excellence in Service & Civic Engagement Awardee - Abbie Robinson; Excellence in Study Abroad/Study USA Awardee - Alexis Williams; and Excellence in Undergraduate Research Awardee - Sydney Brown. The following individuals received Academic Excellence Awards: Male Student Athlete - Tyler Stanley, Men’s Baseball; Female Student Athlete - Nyah Spearman, Women’s Soccer; First-year with the Highest GPA - Chandler Vaughan; Sophomore with the Highest GPA - Petra-Marie Edwards; Junior with the Highest GPA- La'shaundranique Marshall; and Senior with the Highest GPA- Gabrielle Beamon. Other awards included: Elon Black Alumni Network Scholarship, Jordan Vaughn; African & African-American Studies at Elon Award, Janae Williams; Wilhelmina Boyd Community Service Award, Sandra Reid, Lecturer in Human Services Studies; and the Janice Ratliff Community Service Award, Marilyn Slade, Program Assistant in the CREDE. Since the inception of the Black Excellence Awards in 1993, Elon students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the community have gathered annually to celebrate the accomplishments of the black students enrolled full-time in the undergraduate program at Elon University. The banquet was officially named the Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards Banquet in 2006 in honor of Elon’s first black student, Glenda Phillips, and the first black graduate, Eugene Perry. The mission is to recognize, celebrate, and affirm students who excel in academics, leadership, internship, study abroad, research, and service-learning. The Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education remains committed to this mission by helping students become active participants in their personal growth and in the achievement of their educational objectives. Some names included: L’Tanya Richmond, Dr. Leon Williams, Melissa Jordan, and students with high grade point averages.
Omicron Delta Kappa: Induction Ceremony (2018)
This video, titled The Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Induction Ceremony, occurred on February 4, 2018. Gabrielle Vance opened the induction ceremony with a Welcome. Vance was the President of the ODK Circle. Seventy-five students and a faculty member were inducted into the national leadership honor society. The ODK executive board selected their new adviser Melanie Bullock to give the keynote speech. She addressed the Induction Ceremony on how we have learn the skills needed to lead, since kindergarten. She reminded the inductees that it is their responsibility as academic and community leaders on campus to promote growth and change. ODK members demonstrate high academic achievement, have diverse leadership experiences and exhibited growth in leadership skills. The student inductees were invited to the Elon Circle of ODK and identified as the top 33 percent of the junior and senior class. Students who applied were selected for induction based on their exemplary leadership across five phases of campus life, including athletics, the arts, and communications, scholarship, and community service. #LongLiveTheLamberts (2018)
This video, titled #LongLiveTheLamberts, is a social media campaign which occurred at President Leo M. and Laurie Lamberts last College Coffee on February 27, 2018 in Alumni Gym. Students were holding signs that read, “#LongLiveTheLamberts.” The Lamberts can be seen holding their grandson and smiling. This was a way for students, faculty, and staff to wish the Lamberts a great next Elon journey. There were international students in Venice, Italy, holding the hash tag sign. The video concluded with a photo shot of the Lamberts on a card that read, “#LongLiveTheLamberts.”
Physician Assistant Studies (2017)
This video, titled Physician Assistant Studies, was produced by University Communications in October 2017. This video discussed the interest and the implementation of the Physician Assistant Studies program at Elon University in the Gerald (Gerry) Francis building (the old Smithfield Ham Company). Some names included: Dr. Patti Ragan, Dr. Andy Lamb, M.D., and Keri a PA student.
Top 10 Under 10 Awards Ceremony: Jasmine Turner (2018)
This video, titled Top 10 Under 10: Jasmine Turner, was recognized for achieving high levels of success, continuously working to elevate her community, and a loyal alumni role model. The recognition was presented by The Office of Alumni Engagement and the Young Alumni Council. Turner, Class of 2015, is a Reporter at WWBT News. A journalism graduate, Turner was named Youth Trustee and served a term on the Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2017. Professionally, she is a television news reporter in Richmond, Virginia, and previously worked in a similar capacity in Wilmington, North Carolina
