cancer patients. The purpose of this study consists of proving the effect of transpersonal group psychotherapy on depression, anxiety, stress, spirituality and peak experiences, in cancer patients in complete remission. Materials and Methods : Ten patients were voluntarily enrolled, 8 women and 2 men; affected by different types of cancer: 5 of the breast, 1 uterus, 1 rhino-pharyngeal, 1 colon, 1 lung, 1 chronic myeloid leukemia. All patients were treated with the therapies provided by the actual guidelines: surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and hormone therapy. The group psychotherapy lasted 3 years with a total of about 120 sessions and the approach was trans-personal. During the sessions specific techniques were used such as: creative meditations and bioenergetics. The methods we used to evaluate the type of disorders and the effect of the therapy were: Beck Depression Inventory Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, Impact Event Scale Revisited, Spiritual Well Being Scale and a valuation of Peak experience. Results: There was shown to be a general improvement in all domains studied. The depressive disorder is reduced with a starting average of 16.87 and a subsequent score of 9.25 (sd± 5,6). The symptoms related to anxiety are reduced, with a score ranging from 25,64 to 17,37 (sd± 10,54). The post traumatic disorder goes from 44.87 (sd ±33.43) to 29 (sd± 17.51; p = 0.02) at the second evaluation. In addition, 5 patients had peak experiences. We also found an increase in spirituality with a score from 13 to 20. Discussion: Several studies affirm that a significant frequency of anxiety, depression and low quality of life influences cancer patients. This study shows that a trans-personal psychotherapy of a group is effective on anxiety and depression, post-traumatic disorder, spirituality and peak experiences. Conclusions: a group psychotherapeutic approach with transpersonal model may improve life in patients with cancer, reducing symptoms such as anxiety and depression and increases spiritual well-being. Emotional intelligence involvement in medical student’s predisposition to burnout and stress dysfunctions

    No full text
BACKGROUND: There has been a preponderance of burnout in the area of health (1-2) and among oncologists (3-4-5), with a decrease over the years of career (9). This can increase the risk of medical errors and reduce work performance. The studies show that there are high levels of stress (15-16-17), and Depression (18-19-20-21) among medical students. low levels of awareness (22) and Emotional Intelligence (23-24) are considered to be responsible for the professional (32) and academicals (30-31) success. STUDY’S OBJECTIVE: The goal was to highlight the influence that academia and the hospital structure have on the lives of oncology and medical students. This examining the trend over time of burnout, perceived stress and depression. We also explore the influence of emotional intelligence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Assessment of burnout (MBI) (35) on eleven oncologists and comparison with 12 years previous. Analyzed perceived stress (PSS-10) (36) and Depression (BDI-II) (37) trends on 546 medical students, also the new-graduates. Emotional intelligence (EIS), (38) was studied in a selected group of students. RESULTS: earned high values of burnout (EE Average=24, DP Average=5, PA average=37), Perceived Stress (average 21.9 SD±5.99) and Depression (average 14.8 ds± 9.3). Burnout decreases with career years (45.6% of doctors in 2018 and 64.3% twelve years earlier) in doctors achieving good personal realization. PSS-10 and BDI-II have a peculiar pattern over the study years and are statistically significant in correlation (p<0.001). The EIS factors have a strong negative correlation with Depression (F1/BDI p=0.02; F2/BDI p<0.01) and Perceived stress (F2/PSS p<0.01) CONCLUSION: the strong influence by the hospital structure and the course of studies on doctors and students is confirmed by the worrying levels of Burnout, Depression and Stress and by the trend of these over the years. Emotional intelligence can be a key point to reinforce by activating specific training pathways. New studies should look for the most appropriate and easily integrated methods

Pathophysiological new findings in horse’s stereotypes and preventive methods.

    No full text
Horses stereotypies are abnormal and repetitive behaviors, usually related to a suboptimal environment, in which horses are not free to exhibit their normal habits (grazing, moving, socializing). Many years ago the domestication led to a different and modern management of horses, including housing in boxes or small paddocks and a predilection for concentrate food. This different management doesn‟t allow to express its natural behaviors, particularly in terms of feeding and movement. This form of domestication was born to encourage the improvement of animal management and nutritional intake but it results in an increased incidence of organic pathologies, mostly gastrointestinal, as well as behavioral, like stereotypies. Different forms of equine stereotypic behaviors have been described, such as crib biting, weaving and box walking. In the light of pathophysiological new findings, a correlation between immunological and neuroendocrine mediators has been reported. The connection between inflammatory or stress processes and the immune system is managed by a complex system of cytokines. From the neuroendocrine point of view both dopaminergic and serotoninergic pathways are widely involved in stereotypic behaviors. Different researchers, hypothesized that the functional significance of stereotypies is that they reduce stress in captive environments and should thus be considered as a coping mechanism coming from species adaptation. As a chronic stress consequence, stereotypic behavior may be controlled by a correct management of the animal, removing all possible causes that can induce the onset of diseases as a preventive action, promoting respect for the animal and its basic needs, guaranteeing to the horse a life as similar as possible to its natural one, because most behavioral problems are related to domesticatio
