Code Review of GUI-based Tests
Background: Modern software systems are large and complex, requiring collaboration among developers with diverse skills to manage this complexity. Code review is an essential collaborative software engineering practice in which changes are discussed before they are integrated into the codebase, enhancing code quality and promoting knowledge sharing. GUI-based testing is a technique that verifies and validates a system’s behavior through its GUI by simulating user interactions. Like production code, it requires collaboration, as tests are created, reviewed, and maintained alongside production code. Code review practices for tests differ from those for production code. Omitting reviews of tests can lower their quality and increase maintenance costs. However, practices for reviewing GUI-based tests are not well understood, as academic literature mainly focuses on production code and low-level tests. Objective: We aim to advance the understanding and practice of code review of GUI-based tests by (a) identifying code review guidelines; (b) investigating the specific practices, challenges, and information needs; (c) finding empirical evidence supporting the proposed guidelines; and (d) providing an outlook on how code review may evolve in the future. Methods: First, we conduct a literature review of white and gray literature to identify guidelines for source and test code, and synthesize them for GUI-based tests. Next, we perform qualitative interviews with software testing professionals to identify practices, challenges, and information needs when reviewing GUI-based tests. To find empirical evidence for the proposed guidelines, we mine open-source software repositories. Finally, we conduct a questionnaire survey to gather practitioners’ expectations about the future importance of code reviews. Results: We synthesized 33 guidelines for GUI-based tests from literature sources. In analyzing code review comments from open-source repositories, we found empirical evidence supporting 25 out of the 33 proposed guidelines. Practitioners acknowledge the importance of code reviews, but lack defined practices for reviewing GUI-based tests. We identified four practices, six challenges, and four information needs related to reviewing GUI-based tests. The survey results indicate that code review will remain an essential practice with an anticipated increase in code review activities, including those for GUI-based tests. Conclusion: This thesis advances the understanding and practice of code review for GUI-based tests to improve both review effectiveness and the quality of the tests underreview. We present a set of empirically grounded guidelines derived from literature and refined through the analysis of code review comments of open-source repositories. Our research investigates current practices for reviewing GUI-based tests, highlighting the specific challenges and information needs that distinguish these reviews from those for production code. Finally, we highlight the relevance of our research for the future
Different Hallucinations calls for Different Solutions - A Categorisation of LLM Transcription Mistakes
This paper presents a contribution to better interpretation of the results we get from GenAI models, more specifically, better interpretation of the mistakes that they make. We have conducted an analysis of 644 (from GPT-4o) + 4858 (from ARIA) mistakes made by two models on a key-value extraction task, and found that they may be categorised into three mutually exclusive groups. These groups are; i problems identifying the requested information, p problems presenting the correct information, and s skewed training data. These categories could be used to indicate which action a user could take to reduce the number of mistakes. Further, we have found a strong correlation between the suggested categories and the Ratcliff/Obershelp pattern recognition score between the generated result and the expected result; all faulty results containing minor mistakes are more than 60% similar to the expected result. Only mistakes based on lack of identifying what was requested had less than 60% similarity to the expected result.
Artiklarna söktes i databaserna Cummulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Litterature [CINAHL] och Public Medline [PubMed].
Orbit-aware task scheduling in satellite edge computing
Satellite Edge Computing (SEC) enables deploying computational services on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and transforms LEO constellations into distributed platforms composed of hundreds to thousands of nodes. SEC has the potential to offer a Quality of Service level comparable to mature edge computing solutions, with the advantage of offering global connectivity and low-latency computing in geographical locations not reached by high-speed internet links or 5G networks. The fulfillment of SEC requires computation offloading, resource allocation, and load distribution solutions challenged by scarce computational resources, energy constraints, high-speed motion of computing nodes, communication instability, and fault detection and recovery. This paper focuses on the problem of computation offloading and resource allocation (i.e., task scheduling) by proposing a distributed solution dealing with resource constraints, execution time constraints, satellite motion visibility (sunset), and minimizing the overall average response time. Our solution is based on a system model that captures satellites' orbital motion and removes the classical assumptions made in the literature on the satellite network topology and the maximum number of one-hop connections among satellites. Using DES simulation, we assess the performance of the proposed scheduling algorithms when long-running tasks are executed, i.e., tasks with a service time in the range of sunset time, 25 to 176 seconds. Results show that the proposed solution allows for achieving a very high success rate of the tasks, guaranteeing the execution before sunset; the resource allocation policy permits the completion of a high percentage of tasks within the deadline.SERICS under the MUR National Recovery and Resilience Pla
Augmenting Software Bills of Materials with Software Vulnerability Description : A Preliminary Study on GitHub
Software Bills of Material (SBOMs) are becoming a consolidated-and often enforced by governmental regulations-way to describe software composition. However, based on recent studies, SBOMs suffer from limited support for their consumption and lack information beyond simple dependencies, especially regarding software vulnerabilities. This paper reports the results of a preliminary study in which we augmented SBOMs of 40 open-source projects with information about Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) exposed by project dependencies. Our augmented SBOMs have been evaluated by submitting pull requests and by asking project owners to answer a survey. Although, in most cases, augmented SBOMs were not directly accepted because owners required a continuous SBOM update, the received feedback shows the usefulness of the suggested SBOM augmentation
Securing Digital Identity : Blockchain-Based Anonymous Authentication with Zero-Knowledge Proofs
In an era where digital identity and privacy are of paramount concern, traditional authentication systems often fall short in safeguarding user data from centralized breaches and surveillance. This thesis explores the design and implementation of a decentralized authentication framework that leverages blockchain technology and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) to enable secure and anonymous user login. By integrating Ethereum smart contracts, SHA256 hashing, and the ZoKrates ZKP-toolkit, the proposed system allows users to register with a public key and hashed password, and subsequently authenticate by proving knowledge of the password without revealing it. MetaMask is employed as a wallet interface for seamless interaction with the blockchain, offering a widely adopted and user-friendly interface for signing blockchain transactions. The proposed system is evaluated against conventional login systems based on metrics for security, and individually measured on the applications functionality. The results highlight the potential of ZKP-based authentication to enhance both security and user privacy, demonstrating a viable pathway toward more resilient digital identity systems
Multiplierless DFT Approximation Based on the Prime Factor Algorithm
Matrix approximation methods have successfully produced efficient, low-complexity approximate transforms for the discrete cosine transforms and the discrete Fourier transforms. For the DFT case, literature archives approximations operating at small power-of-two blocklenghts, such as {8, 16, 32}, or at large blocklengths, such as 1024, which are obtained by means of the Cooley-Tukey-based approximation relying on the small-blocklength approximate transforms. Cooley-Tukey-based approximations inherit the intermediate multiplications by twiddled factors which are usually not approximated; otherwise the effected error propagation would prevent the overall good performance of the approximation. In this context, the prime factor algorithm can furnish the necessary framework for deriving fully multiplierless DFT approximations. We introduced an approximation method based on small prime-sized DFT approximations which entirely eliminates intermediate multiplication steps and prevents internal error propagation. To demonstrate the proposed method, we design a fully multiplierless 1023-point DFT approximation based on 3-, 11- and 31-point DFT approximations. The performance evaluation according to popular metrics showed that the proposed approximations not only presented a significantly lower arithmetic complexity but also resulted in smaller approximation error measurements when compared to competing methods.
Decoding smart building data using machine learning for text transformation
Background: The rapid growth of smart building systems has led to an increasingneed for efficient and accurate interpretation of sensor data. However, the unstructured nature of technical codes and the lack of standardized metadata pose significant challenges for building operators, software developers, and consultants. Thesestakeholders often spend considerable time manually decoding technical sensor codes(e.g., ’PA24’ or ’VVX’) into meaningful, standardized formats. This manual processis time-consuming, error-prone, and limits scalability across multiple buildings. Thegoal of this research is to develop an automated solution using machine learning to interpret and transform unstructured sensor data into standardized, machine-readableformats, thereby reducing manual effort, improving data consistency, and enablingmore efficient software development and building management. Objectives: The primary objective of this thesis is to develop and validate a softwareprototype that automates the structuring and interpretation of smart building sensordata. Specifically, the research aims to: Automate the translation of technical codes into standardized, machine-readableformats. Evaluate the effectiveness of fine-tuned LLMs in handling domain-specific patterns, such as custom regular expressions (regex). Assess the impact of data quality and structure on the performance of finetuned LLMs. Methods: This research adopts a Design Science Research (DSR) approach, whichinvolves iterative development and evaluation of a software prototype. The methodology includes: Data Collection: Gathering sensor data and ontology files from smart building systems. Data Preprocessing:Extracting regex patterns from the ontology and generating synthetic training data. Model Development: Fine-tuning the T5 model on the preprocessed datato interpret technical codes. Model Evaluation: Assessing the model’s performance using accuracy andconfidence scores. Iterative Refinement: Refining the model and dataset based on feedbackand testing results. Results: The fine-tuned T5 model achieved a 96% accuracy rate in interpretingtechnical codes, with confidence scores above 0.99 for most predictions. The modeldemonstrated the ability to generalize across diverse patterns, including novel inputsnot present in the training data. Key findings include: Automation significantly reduces manual effort and improves data consistency. Fine-tuning LLMs on domain-specific datasets enhances their performance inspecialized applications. Structured datasets and optimized training configurations are critical for achieving high model accuracy. Conclusions: This research demonstrates the potential of fine-tuned LLMs to automate the interpretation of smart building sensor data, reducing reliance on manual processes and improving scalability. The findings highlight the importance ofdomain-specific fine-tuning and structured datasets in achieving accurate and reliable predictions. This work contributes to the broader field of natural language processing (NLP) by bridging theoretical advances with practical applications in smartbuilding management. Future work could explore the integration of larger models, advanced data augmentation techniques, and real-time adaptation capabilities.
