Over this time we have successfully deployed a number of innovative repositories, including Southampton University EdShare, The Language Box, The HumBox, Open University’s LORO and Worcester Learning Box

Move On Up: TCD TARA and the Value of Dspace 1.6

    Get PDF
Before In 2006 Enovation Solutions with Trinity College Dublin developed TARA - Trinity's Access to Research Archive. TARA was based on DSpace customised with specific enhancements for TCD and integrated with the university's CERIF-compliant CRIS, the TCD Research Support System (RSS). The version of Dspace deployed was 1.3.2. Over the years, much further integration, customisation and configuration of complex workflows, metadata fields and web services were implemented as TARA became an integral part of the university's fully-integrated research environment. However, it was realised that the version of Dspace was starting to creak, and that an upgrade was needed to move the repository to a new level of capacity, functionality and responsiveness to the needs of the research community. In 2009 TCD approached Enovation Solutions to investigate and plan the upgrade of TARA from DSpace v1.3.2

Researcher Name Resolver: A framework for researcher identification in Japan

    Get PDF
Institutional repositories with the aim of open access are gradually spreading in academia, and more and more research articles and academic books are being archived on the web. In particular, researchers are accessing more and more electronic articles, papers, and books on the web. This paper describes an information service that firstly provides researcher name authority on the web, and secondly gathers the web locations of academic information resources and organizes them for individual researchers (especially researchers working in Japan)

Historisierende und strukturell-funktionale Wirtschaftslinguistik und Wirtschaftsgermanistik. Inhalte und Methoden sowie Relevanz für die gegenwärtige interkulturelle Wirtschaftskommunikation

    Get PDF

On transfer in SLA of German weak pronouns

    Get PDF
This study investigates second language acquisition of object weak pronouns in old information contexts in German by adult Italian Native Speakers. Provided that Italian and German differ in their pronominal systems and select different types of pronouns in old information contexts, the hypothesis was investigated whether the Italian L2 learners of German use pronouns clitic-like, then transferring the Italian choice into German, or rather use strong pronouns. Based on an oral grammaticality judgment task and an elicited production task, data show that our L2 learners place pronouns in positions dedicated to strong elements and that their accuracy on pronoun placement (i.e. use of target weak pronouns) increases dependently on their level of proficiency of the target language. In fact, results show that acquisition of target placement of pronouns proceeds through stages similar to those found for the acquisition of cliticization in Romance languages (e.g. Towell and Hawkins 1994, Herschensohn 2004)

    Archival description in OAI-ORE

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to define a new method for representing and managing description of archival collections using OAI-ORE. This new method has two advantages. Firstly, it adapts traditional archival description methods for the contemporary reality that digital collections, unlike collections of physical materials, are not best described by physical location. Secondly, it takes advantage of the power of OAI-ORE to allow for a multitude of non-linear relationships, providing richer and more powerful access and description

DSpace Helps Irish National Learning Repository To Change Its Focus

    Get PDF
This paper describes how the Irish National Digital Learning Resource Repository (NDLR) has implemented a DSpace-based platform which enables it to more effectively utilise its limited resources to serve customer need. The implementation of a DSpace-based solution in partnership with two private-sector service providers has permitted a refocusing of the available resources from software licensing to research and development of the platform

From research data repositories to virtual research environments: a case study from the Humanities

    Get PDF
The difference in scholarly practices between the sciences and the mainstream humanities is highlighted in a study (Palmer et al., 2009), which investigated the types of information source materials used in different humanities disciplines, based on results contained in the US Research Libraries Group (RLG) reports. Structured data is relatively little used, except in some areas of historical research, and data as it is traditionally understood in the sciences, i.e. the results of measurements and the lowest level of abstraction for the generation of scientific knowledge, even less so. It is true that the study is partly outdated, containing results from the early 1990s, and that data in the traditional sense is becoming increasingly important in the humanities, particularly for disciplines such as linguistics and archaeology in which scientific techniques have been widely adopted. Nevertheless, it is clear that in general humanities research relies not on measurements as a source of authority, but rather on the provenance of sources and assessment by peers, and that what data repositories are for the sciences, archives are for the humanities. Pedocs and kopal: Co-operation of subject repository and long-term archiving

    Get PDF
The Information Center for Education of the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) in Frankfurt on Main offers information and advice services for all areas of education and educational science. These are online portals, full text and bibliographic databases, information systems and participative Web 2.0 applications. Since 2008, the Information Center for Education has operated its subject repository "pedocs" which focuses on digital publications in the field of educational science, pedagogical practice and the history of education. For the time being this repository is run as a project in parallel with a second project, "Long term preservation - pedagogics" aiming to preserve texts acquired, recorded and stored in the "pedocs" repository on a long term basis. The synchrony of both projects offers an opportunity to prepare the digital objects in pedocs from the outset in a way that makes them suitable for subsequent transfer into a long-term archive. While the repository is solely managed by the Information Center for Education, the archiving will be operated in co-operation with the German National Library (DNB). The poster will outline the workflows which have been developed and established for acquisition of open-access publications on the one hand and for long term preservation of the text objects on the other hand. It will illustrate which aspects (i.e legal, technical, organisational) had to be considered to prepare the preserving objects for transfer into the long term archive. The co-operation and resource sharing of the DIPF and DNB taking place in the framework of a superordinate project using the archiving system "kopal", a joint-venture development of the DNB and the Göttingen State and University Library, will be presented

Repository sustainability: arXiv business model experience and implications

    Get PDF
In January 2010 Cornell University Library moved to expand the funding base for arXiv by requesting support from user institutions. We hope that this voluntary support model will engage the institutions that benefit most from arXiv while maintaining arXiv's open access mission as a service free to readers and submitters alike. The development of a business model has made us look closely at arXiv's sustainability from both operational and technical standpoints. The engagement of supporting institutions creates new requirements to demonstrate value to these institutions as separate from arXiv's understood value to the community in general. In this presentation we will briefly describe options considered in development of the business model, the model chosen, uptake and feedback. We will then focus on the implications for arXiv's operation, for the long term development of our platform, and new reporting facilities
