Working with authentic ELT discourse data: The Flensburg English Classroom Corpus

    Get PDF
The Flensburg English Classroom Corpus (FLECC) is a special corpus containing authentic classroom discourse. It consists of transcripts of 39 complete lessons of English as a foreign language taught in North German schools of diverse types: Grundschule, Hauptschule, Realschule, and Gesamtschule. This classroom corpus, which fills a gap in the field of TEFL research, will be introduced. A sample analysis of excerpts from a 5. Klasse English lesson will be provided. This way, some examples of the FLECC's use in academic EFL teacher training will be demonstrated and explained

Building flexible workflows with Fedora, the University of York approach

    Get PDF
In 2008, the University of York embarked on a project to build a multimedia Digital Library underpinned by Fedora Commons. In the long-term, the York Digital Library (YODL) plans to meet not only multimedia requirements, but multi-disciplinary, institutional, multi-user and multiple access control needs. In order to do this, we needed a flexible, scalable approach to fulfil the following three strands of our roadmap: * An ‘administrative’ workflow, including metadata creation forms, automatic extraction of metadata and data/resource transformation for images, video, music, audio and text resources to be extensible as new resource types are identified. * A self-deposit workflow for non-administrative users to deposit to YODL, White Rose Research Online (WRRO) and other targets as appropriate. * Bulk ingest tools and procedures, to include a desktop deposit tool. This paper will outline current and future work at York which builds on Fedora Commons, initially drawing on the Muradora interface and access control layer with a SWORD-enabled simple deposit tool in development and future plans for making this more flexible with Mura-independent applications

DSpace Discovery: Unifying DSpace Search and Browse with Solr

    Get PDF
One key innovation long awaited by the DSpace community is a more intuitive and unified search and browse experience. NESCent and @mire NV have collaborated to create a new Faceted Search and Browse experience for NESCent's DSpace repository, Dryad. DSpace Discovery is a modular Add-on for DSpace XMLUI that replaces DSpace search and browse with Solr. The implementation of Discovery's Services utilize the DSpace Services API originally developed for DSpace 2.0 and back-ported for use within the recent release of DSpace 1.6.0. Thus, DSpace Discovery represents the next stage in @mire's DSpace 2.0 development initiative

Integrating DSpace in a Multinational Context: Challenges and Reflections

    Get PDF
Background Sharing and accessing knowledge is possible in ways that were not available even in the recent past. These methods make the exchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge efficient, relatively inexpensive, and simple. A number of international standards have been developed and agreed upon by academic institutions, research enterprises, governments, and others which increase the ease of knowledge exchange through interoperability of systems and consistency in the presentation of expected features and data. With an internet connection and a few clicks of a computer's mouse, a vast array of knowledge is instantly accessible. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), established to accelerate economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean, is committed to ensuring its knowledge products are accessible and visible for Bank employees, constituents of borrowing and non-borrowing member countries, partners and other practitioners in the region and the public at large. Due to the nature of the IDB, access to and the sharing of knowledge are critical for the success of its development mission. It is of the utmost importance to the institution, its mission, and its role in the region that the knowledge produced by the Bank be easily accessible and visible for all in the development community and beyond

Integrating research output in UPC repositories

    Get PDF
Introduction In 2007, the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) started a strategical Project for the University called DRAC (Descriptor de la Recerca i l'Activitat Academica or Academic Activity and Research Descriptor): the main goal of which was the development of a new information system for managing, evaluating and publishing the research output. The Library participated in the project from the beginning. The other two partners were: OTRDI (the office manager of the research output) and UPCnet as the technological partner. DRAC, the new software, has the following applications: the main one is that academics can develop a curriculum following the national standard for presentation to national and regional administrations. It is also the tool that allows research groups to publish their output on the Internet

JorumOpen - customising DSpace for a national repository of Open Educational Resources

    Get PDF
Jorum, a JISC-funded service in development begun in 2002, has been committed to collecting and sharing learning and teaching materials within the UK Further and Higher Education community. With the growing interest in and increase in "open" content, Jorum released a new option in January 2010 - JorumOpen, which provides a focus to find nationally hosted learning materials developed by the UK Further and Higher Education sector. JorumOpen allows any user, from any country, free and unrestricted access to learning materials licensed under a Creative Commons licence. The central component of JorumOpen is an open source digital repository based on a modified version of DSpace 1.5.2

Promoting Open Access to librarians and researchers by the international information platform open-access.net

    Get PDF
Open access has become an important publication form but the concept behind is not as well known as the public discussion makes us believe sometimes. Still today open access is equalized with electronic publication and often mixed with offers like google books. Researchers feel unsure when faced with open access and as a consequence often react conservatively. A German Research Foundation (DFG) funded project (2006-2010) attempts to structure and describe the concept of and the discussion about open access. With the libraries of the Universities of Bielefeld, Goettingen und Konstanz and the Institute of Qualitative Research in Berlin, four German experts in the area of open access took the initiative to create a now well known information platform www.open-access.net

Semantic Search Engines - Grundlagen (RDF, OWL, Reasoning) und Anwendungen

    No full text
