Bridging Pedagogy, Curriculum, and Assessment in Digital Education: Ensuring a Constructive Alignment

    Get PDF
An individual has the right to a quality and inclusive education and to training throughout their life. This is described in the European Pillar of Social Rights' principles of Education, training, and lifelong learning, and Equal opportunities. Given that digitalization processes are leading to pedagogical change, how this education and training are designed and delivered may be impacted. This article explores the important interplay between pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment in digital education. We begin by discussing the acquisition of digital skills - an important indicator of an individual's capacity to manage transitions - particularly focusing on the Portuguese context. Next, we reflect on how different learning theories and models can be applied in digital environments. In particular, we address the evolving roles of teachers and students, and the relevant pedagogical strategies, and propose the need for an alignment between pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment in digital education. By reflecting on how these aspects can be effectively integrated into the digital learning landscape, this overview provides valuable insights for both practice and policymaking, fostering meaningful and enriching educational experiences in the digital realm

Politicians, Electoral Integrity, and Electoral Management Bodies: A Cross‐National Study on Satisfaction With Democracy

Competitive elections that are free and fair are the bedrock of stable representative democracies. In this critical moment, in which there is an increase of democratic decline across states, it is imperative to (re‐)examine fundamental democratic processes, like elections. In addition to citizens, politicians are key actors in the electoral process. Politicians can influence the views of citizens, make changes within political institutions, and contribute to democratic breakdown or backsliding. Therefore, understanding their views about the way democracy works is crucial. While there has been a recent increase in the scholarship on politicians' perceptions and behaviours, it has not yet considered whether aspects of the electoral process might affect politicians' democratic satisfaction. Furthermore, while the literature on citizens' democratic satisfaction is well‐established, our understanding of politicians' satisfaction with democracy (SWD) is not. This article begins to address these gaps in the scholarship on SWD and politicians by examining whether electoral integrity and the characteristics of electoral management bodies influence politicians' levels of SWD. By analyzing cross‐national data from The Comparative Candidates Survey covering 49 elections, in 21 countries, from 2005 to 2021, this article highlights three key findings: first, while electoral integrity affects levels of politicians' SWD, it matters more for politicians who lost the election. Second, electoral management bodies' independence does not affect politicians' levels of SWD. Third, while electoral management bodies' capacity influences politicians' levels of democratic satisfaction, the strength of the effect differs for politicians on the ideological right and left. The implications of these findings are explained in the article

Associations Between Perceived Societal Polarisation and (Extreme) Non‐Normative Attitudes and Behaviour

Perceptions of societal polarisation in a country may influence individuals' willingness to engage in non(normative) collective action. In the present research, we test the hypothesis that perceived societal polarisation reduces trust in the government, particularly when the government is perceived as posing a threat to the own social group. In turn, we expect increased willingness to engage in collective action on behalf of the ingroup. To test our predictions, we used a 2 (no threat versus threat) × 2 (no polarisation versus polarisation) experimental design. In the paradigm, participants are citizens in a fictitious country called "Bovenland." Participants read three newspaper articles about political issues targeted at their ingroup "the Southerners." After each newspaper article, participants indicated their intention to engage in collective action as well as their trust in the Bovenland government. A pilot study (N = 42) suggested that our experimental manipulation of perceived threat and perception of polarisation was effective. Our (preregistered) main study (N = 982) gathered through Prolific, found that perceived threat, but not polarisation, resulted in significantly more collective action intentions (normative, non‐normative, and extreme non‐normative). Under threat (but not under polarisation) significantly more (non)normative action intentions emerged. Bootstrapping analyses supported our finding that there was no direct effect of polarisation on collective action intentions. However, in the no‐threat condition, polarisation increased trust in the Bovenland government, which predicted less collective action intentions (normative, non‐normative, and extreme non‐normative). The implications of these findings will be discussed

Ohne Begriff keine Erinnerung?

    Get PDF

'My parents told me to love my country': positionalities of second-generation diaspora Eritreans in a transnational setting

    Get PDF
The article explores positionalities of second-generation diaspora Eritreans and their ambivalent attitudes towards their ancestral homeland and their residence country, considering the influence of their parents' history on identity formation. It is based on long-term observation, narrative interviews, and a social media analysis to explore their self-perceptions, which originate in competing narratives about Eritrea's past and present. Socialization in a democratic country, but also experiences of xenophobia and exclusion in their residence country shape the second-generation diaspora's positionalities. Some engage in political or civil movements that strive for change inside Eritrea, support refugees in distress or disadvantaged groups in their country of residence, while others try to distance themselves from their heritage. I conclude that positionalities of young Eritrean diasporans are manifold and complex and do not fit in categorizations such as being either government supporters or opposition activists, as they are often described in the media

Whose future? Epistemic challenges to the collective 'we' in long-term governance

    Get PDF
Building on insights from Science & Technology Studies and epistemology, this article critically examines the epistemic underpinnings of long-term governance (LTG), particularly its implicit assumptions about temporality, collective agency, and the perception of issues that shape governance practices. I identify three key challenges: (i) the tendency to conceive of futures as discrete endpoints rather than relational processes, (ii) the epistemic and political implications of an anticipatory 'we' that privileges dominant narratives while marginalizing others, and (iii) the largely unconsidered epistemic structures that implicitly determine what is perceived as imaginable futures.

Comparing two constellation analyses: Insights from the development of weeding robots and autonomous shuttles

    Get PDF
Constellation analysis is a bridging concept for transdisciplinary strategy development. This article compares how constellation analysis was applied in two projects to map strategies for establishing new socio-technical constellations. The focus is on comparing the methodological approach and the question of how certain decisions affected the potential for strategy development and knowledge integration. The results show that the constellation analysis in both projects facilitated the integration of different perspectives as well as strategy development. In one project, an analytical focus on the project goals and project duration enabled a better understanding of the roles and tasks of the project partners and the adaptation of strategies to the current state of technology. In the other project, constellation analysis was used for strategy development beyond the project context and for knowledge transfer.
